Ideas for Special Needs 9year old

Really struggling for ideas!
Within two weeks of Christmas last year she had destroyed all of her presents.
Can’t be anything plastic, already has lots of soft toys, nothing with sequins, beads or small parts.
Nothing that could cause to much damage when launched across the room.
No books, have lots and she loves to rip them up 😭
Has to be easily cleanable (still in nappies and things can get messy)
So far we have:
•Swimming noodles (thought she could wave them about and whack the walls in her room without too much damage. Though I am concerned she may eat them)
•A rigid paddling pool with 600 plastic balls to fill it (DIY ball pit)

Thinking of getting one of those big balls found in labour wards 🤔

Special needs toys/equipment are so expensive, love the gel floor tiles but they are pricey!
Any suggestions?

Could you get a yearly membership to something like a local zoo/ farm if there’s anything she enjoys locally? Bedding with characters/ patterns/ colours she’d like? Or things to make her room nice, fairy lights/ glow in the dark stars? Up high and out of reach when put up.

missedtherainbow · 20/11/2019 18:01

WishUponAStar88 thank you, hadn’t thought of the glow in the dark stars!
I think she’d love them as we cant have anything plugged in, in her room. She smashed the sockets and pulled the live wires out of the walls. So no more sockets 🤷🏽‍♀️
She’s not keen on going out and uses compression sheets on her bed but might look for a snuggly blanket!

Thank you

A little trampette to bounce on?

missedtherainbow · 20/11/2019 18:15

likesweetpeas unfortunately she she’s likely to launch that at someone.

One of those sensory tubes that she can get inside? Like a stretchy fabric tube that offers a little compression, and feels all dark and cosy. Like a big soft sock thing. There's probably a proper name...

Pop up tent?

Sensory stuff like those silver foil fabric blankets?

picklemepopcorn · 20/11/2019 18:19

What about a swing seat/hammock chair? You could hang it from a joist in the ceiling, or if there was one stable enough you can get frames.

Mine liked curling into it and swinging.

picklemepopcorn · 20/11/2019 18:21

I get stuff here. www.cheapdisabilityaids.co.uk/

I've had waterproof, spot washable bean bags.

What about a big rubber ball she can sit/roll on?

Weighted blanket?

What's the issue with plastic?

Grasspigeons · 20/11/2019 18:27

I think they are called a body sock. picklemepopcorn
Would anything for outdoors work. Like a big inflatble beach ball with glitter or eanbags for throwing (maybe eaten)

Colour your own house thing?

WellTidy · 20/11/2019 18:40

Do you have a garden? Garden toys are good in my experience. We have a frame that has swings on it, we’ve replaced one of the normal swings with a hammock swing and that has been brilliant.

There's a range of books on Amazon called Indestructibles which my son liked, as he enjoys flicking through books but does destroy them. If your DD enjoys tearing up books then you could wrap up a few Argos catalogues just for something to open.

My son enjoyed the Talking Tom cat toy and did try to interact with it. This year we have bought him a builder's DAB radio from Amazon, it's surrounded by a rubber casing so hopefully will last until the new year at least!

Gemma2019 · 20/11/2019 19:19

I forgot to add - we've also bought this

and some toys called Silishapes from Amazon.

Spray water bath toy. Crazy foam soap. Would she like something like marble run...my 9 year old and 2 year old love it. A spinny egg chair. A tent?
As someone said maybe horse riding or trampolining?
A wubble ball?
Could you make a sensory board?
The ball you mentioned (my own son gets a bit hyper on those!). My oh did get an inflatable large football once.
Lava lamp (up high) although they kept my son awake!

TheSummoningDark · 20/11/2019 19:43

Sensory Peanut ball?

Balance pods?

What about some sort of battery powered light projector? You might have to put it somewhere high though.

There is a UV kit on the Fledglings website, but it is expensive.

Musical bells or similar?

Lovemusic33 · 20/11/2019 19:50

I have a dd who is similar and is now 13 so I will share some of the things she used to like (and didn’t destroy)

Bilibo My dd played with hers until she was ten ish.

infinity mirror

Also how about a pop up tent or bed tent to hide in?

Dd likes the sequin cushions (b&m sell them).

This balloon ball..
It's a cover, you put a balloon inside. It's very light to throw, can't hit anyone because it's sort of floaty. If she bursts it, the balloon pieces stay inside the cover. You can get fancier designs.

TheSummoningDark · 20/11/2019 20:45

This is unusual but hear me out.

OT/specialist teacher have got one of those foam foot scrubbers for the shower under DSs seat (9, sensory seeker), from Poundland, B&M, Savers or similar. He loves it.

missedtherainbow · 20/11/2019 20:47

Thank you so much for all of your suggestions I’m going to be shopping through the night! Thank you

Footspa? Obviously only to be used under supervision!

Curious2468 · 20/11/2019 23:47

Door swing! Gorilla gym or play away

Stay away from cheap disability aids site - google the company!

XXCoffeeHoneyBread · 21/11/2019 00:05

Both fairly unbreakable and both can be squashed into the bath and hosed out with flash to clean Grin

You could maybe put ball pit in tent using paddling pool or something? Or just fill it with stuffed animals, beanbag, pillows etc.

picklemepopcorn · 21/11/2019 20:28

That's awful, @Curious2468 ! I used to order from them regularly, 5 or so years ago. They were great then.
