5 year old who likes glamorous things

I have a 5 year old niece who enjoys glamorous and sparkly things. She wants for Christmas some 'make-up and jewelry'. I don't have any children yet and I want to be sure I get things she'll like.

My first thought was I'd find a lovely silky, embroidered make-up bag (one I'd like myself) and put in it a few bits and pieces like a little necklace, some hair slide and so on. But I can see there are also available sets of unicorn/frozen stuff and I know she likes frozen. Am I imposing my own tastes too much on this child? Do you think she'd prefer the Frozen-type stuff rather than my -haha- carefully 'curated' version?

Seeing as shes five I'd go with the frozen stuff. My 8 year old dd has a little makd up bag with lip gloss and blush and a blusher brush.

She will sometimes get some eyeshadow from ne when I am doing my own.

At 5 shes still very young so I think the child versions would be best.

If the request for make up has come directly from her, I'd check with her parents before buying make up, but I might be being ridiculous. I don't wear make up myself as an adult so I tend to get the heeby-jeebies about children wearing it.

When I was little I absolutely loved things that were really "grown up", and I still have things like a lovely silver necklace I was given when I was about 8, and a jewellery box I was given around the same age.

BarkandCheese · 20/11/2019 16:09

If she hasn’t already got one you could get her a jewellery box, one of the ones with a twirling musical ballerina inside. In the box you could put a little necklace with her initial or birthstone on it. I remember my grandparents giving me a jewellery box with an initial necklace when I was small and it was one of my favourite presents ever.

gliuccellivolano · 20/11/2019 16:19

Thank you, this is helpful.

Yes, 5 is so little. But also yes, I remember at not much older being given 'grown up' things that felt so special. This is my dilemma!

Something with a birthstone is such a nice idea. I remember being very taken with that idea at that kind of age.

I think a lot of the problem is trying to remember the differences in age - I like to think I have a good memory but really I'm not so sure whether some memories are age 5, 6, 9 or 11.

There's a very girly cosmetics case called POP, there is tons in it and it really is geared towards little girls playing dress up as opposed to proper make up.

It's currently £34 odd pound in Smyth's but I bought it through Groupon in October for less than £15. I am sure you could definitely get it for less than the Smyth's price.

Also have a look on Sass&Belle and Rex London for pretty cosmetic bits, although as she is only 5 I would personally stick to the more "little people" type of cosmetics gift, such as Frozen or POP.

WagtailRobin · 20/11/2019 16:26

PS; I forgot to add if you are considering jewellery you really must look at Hurley Burley.

They do sterling silver jewellery for children, and every items comes presented in a beautiful gift box. They have a great range of items, necklaces and bracelets and some with birthstone options. The price is very reasonable too with free postage.

At 5 DN loved the properly sparkly earrings and hairclips I got her from Accessorize / Ted Baker, and she still wears all of them years later. The character stuff that other people bought haven’t been retained. So I guess it depends on how much you spend and what you want her to do with it.

gliuccellivolano · 20/11/2019 16:32

Oh! All this is so helpful, thank you for these ideas.

I actually really want one of those sticker books now.

I am veering towards feather bower and diamante clips.

Thank you all.

I brought my nearly three year old a frozen makeup set from Argos and a frozen bag from Asda. I was looking at a children’s charm bracelet as she loves my pandora but managed to find cheap and cheerful £1 bracelets in home bargins.

gliuccellivolano · 20/11/2019 17:24

I thought the sticker books looked great but it is not great the astronauts all look like men. So I may get big glam diamante earrings for my five year old niece. This seems bonkers.

Everyone need a feather boa and a fake fur coat. So much glamour!

WhereverIMayRoam · 20/11/2019 19:01

Argos have a good selection including some very cute frozen ones.

ValiaH · 20/11/2019 19:03

Definitely check with her mum first unless her mum is the one who told you. My daughters have been given make up type things and they have gone straight in the bin, at 4 and 7 I think theu are too young for makeup type things. Frozen accessories sounds great, and my 2 love the usborne sticker books, as well as this flip book of princess fashion blackwells.co.uk/bookshop/product/9781474921183?gC=5a105e8b&gclid=Cj0KCQiA5dPuBRCrARIsAJL7oegoLVsdCNdoA5We6LLf5u7xcxWBy2MPKqOP0Nliyw1a8SQAToxloC4aApw-EALw_wcB

Also, I disaprove make up on children.

You can get water based nail varnish if that is more acceptable?

DelurkingAJ · 20/11/2019 20:32

Or hair chalk (I’m told by my friends with small DDs that it washes out easily)?

Maxineputyourredshoeson · 20/11/2019 21:08

My youngest DD is now 7 but she has always loved girly girly stuff (complete opposite from me and DD1). Even from a tiny age the more sparkle/glitter and leopard print the better.

She has a leopard print fur coat - has had them since she was tiny and saw one whilst out with my DM and she absolutely fell in love with it, she has had a new one each time she has grown, admittedly I normally get them second hand.

Over the years I have bought her ‘proper’ tiaras from ebay for £2/3, OTT ‘Pat Butcher’ type earrings, chunky bracelets, ‘diamond’ necklaces and sparkly shoes. She has also loved the huge Jojo bows, especially the sparkly ones. Handbags are another thing she’s crazy over if they have gems/sparkle/glitter on them even better.

Now she’s a bit older her jewellery tastes have calmed down a bit but she still loves her sparkly and glam (as she calls it) stuff.

Maxineputyourredshoeson · 20/11/2019 21:15

This is the tiara I got her, she wore it to death.

gliuccellivolano · 20/11/2019 22:15

Thank you all so much. I cannot think of anything lovelier than a discussion about how to adorn a 5 year old with jewels.

Mine loves her glitter tattoo set, bath bomb makers, sticker dolly dressing books (they have loads) and I got her face paint pens/ sticks so she does makeup on me and herself but it's not anything grown up, it's just colouring in for faces. She's mad for a temporary tattoo too, if you get those and put in a little bag also put in a travel alcohol hand gel with some round cotton wool pads, hand gel is the only stuff that'll remove even the most stubborn tattoos. She loves making potions too, little different sized plastic bottles and tubs with colour my bath tablets from Amazon work really well for bath potions mixed with bubble bath. My SIL keeps buying her lip balms and glosses but she just puts them on endlessly, they end up being a nightmare.

gliuccellivolano · 20/11/2019 23:18

temporary tattoo, brilliant idea, thank you
