Pil like playing boardgames together, but only really play the classics so far, was looking to get them something more modern and was thinking of ticket to ride since it is mentioned on here alot but just seen its 3 - 5 players :(

Any suggestions for similar games that can be played just the two of them

Agricola (all creatures big and small)
Caverna (cave vs cave)
Bezique
Cribbage
Settlers of Catan card game

As someone who often only plays 2 player my other half, we would recommend:

Ticket to Ride New York or London
Jaipur
Odins Ravens
Carcassonne
Welcome to your perfect home

Ticket to ride is great with two people. Also we play a lot of 7 Wonders Duel as it's not too long (30min) and made for two people. Istanbul also works well with two.
We got my mum in to Qwirkle and she makes us play it every time we go round.
Set and Symbotica also good card games and easy to pick up.

Another vote for Othello - it's not particularly modern but we love it

Ticket to Ride Scandi is for two. The New York one is a shortened version of the game.

Qwerkle is good with 2.

Weirding Woods is great fun.

Hive - it's sort of like chess but with different rules and no board. It's easy to learn and once you start to pick up strategies it gets so addictive!

Can any of you gamers tell me if ticket to ride would suit kids? 8/9

VolcanionSteamArtillery · 20/11/2019 23:04

Nooo. A few kids might get it especially if they are from a family of avid gamers and you simplify the game. my 9/10 year old could play it but i dont really think she enjoyed it until a year or two later. I teach it at 10 years roughly.

There are better games younger. Carcassonne, Catan, sushi go, dominion (bass set or intrigue) labyrinth, smallworld (if they are fairly resilient souls).

VolcanionSteamArtillery · 20/11/2019 23:10

Oh yes also qwirkle, colt express, cash and guns (if theres a crowd of you playing) or subterra (cooperative game). Forbidden Island too but i think this has far more limited replayability and is not at good as sub terra.

Patchwork is an easy game, specifically designed for two players. Could be a nice transition from the more traditional things to some of the more complex games others have mentioned. It is a bit like a board game version of Tetris.

Another vote for pandemic here. And Don't Panic is great for a laugh too.

Bl00mingCactus · 21/11/2019 18:08

Sushi Go is good but not sure how it translates to two.

Its actually quite fab 2 players. A bit of a memory game and very competitive but a little quick
