There’s definitely a stigma about buying secondhand and I thought it’d be nice to share the things we’ve managed to pick up preloved!
Whether it’s to have a more conscious Christmas or to save money, what have you managed to get secondhand so far?
This is what I’ve managed to find so far.(Photo has hopefully attached!)

My sister passed me on Schleich dinosaurs that my nephew didn't play with. They look like new.
Also got an ikea toy kitchen second hand but like new, less than half the price of new. Plus came with pots, cups, etc. But the biggest bonus is it is already assembled!
Both for my son who will be almost 2.

stridesy · 16/11/2019 15:05

Last year I got a doll house for dd2. I’ve also got dressing up dresses, a dolls head and some Disney little people fisher Price. Ds10 I have got books previously second hand.
My nephew (6) I’m getting a PlayStation 4 game second hand £20 as opposed to £40 but I know my brother buys him second hand games.

MamaToTheBabyBears · 16/11/2019 16:31

@december9 that's so kind of your sister! I'm sure your little one will love them! Massive bargain with the kitchen too!

@stridesy you've found some lovely bits for your children secondhand! I'm sure your nephew will love it. I'd much rather someone spent £20 on something secondhand that'd be used/ played with than £20 something new that won't! I'm sure the kids feel the same.

Stocking books are always second hand (frankly most books in this house are or I’d be bankrupt).

I’m hoping to repair my dolls house for DS2. There are currently some exposed tracks where the floor should be (it was homemade for me in the 1980s so has done well to get this far).

DS2 will have some Brio Thomas trains from eBay in his stocking. Still not cheap but a lot cheaper (and in the case of Annie and Clarabel not otherwise available).

Bansku19 · 16/11/2019 18:13

I got a second hand Star Wars themed chess set. It's almost twenty years old. It didn't cost much but makes perfect present for Star Wars mad dh.

Equimum · 16/11/2019 20:22

My boys have secondhand Islabikes this year. We spent weeks finding the right ones, and I don’t think we have ever put so much effort into buying a gift for them. DH even took a 40 minute bus ride in the opposite direction after work to collect one, and then did the bus ride back, his normal train commute and a 20 minute walk home with it.

We are also looking for a secondhand Playmobil set for my mum to give DS2. He really wants a particular set but it’s a bit pricey new.

TellMeDinosaurFacts · 16/11/2019 20:34

I've spent months assembling second hand clothes from EBay to make a proper Bilbo Baggins costume for my son. A suitable red coat took ages to find, but he's going to be over the moon. Also got a like-new Galt mega marble run for very little money. Embracing the second hand is such a winner all round.

goose1964 · 17/11/2019 12:07

DGS is the proud owner of an early Christmas present of a hobby horse from a charity shop for £2.99

PrivateSpidey · 17/11/2019 12:12

I've got my mum some second hand Chalet School books - old editions from the 1950s/60s, I would say.

She had them as a kid but they were lost/given away. I can't wait to give them to her!

Love the Bilbo Baggins costume idea btw!

Leflic · 17/11/2019 12:38

Some of my best presents have been signed memorabilia from eBay and signed art all have done the rounds in other homes.

My mum buys loads of second hand stuff for stockings. All fabulous and individual. She wraps them beautifully too. You really know her love and thought has gone into every gift.

DreamingofSunshine · 17/11/2019 15:33

Just managed to get a secondhand bike for DS and I'm bidding on some sylvanian families stuff now. I think secondhand is so good with young children who outgrow/get bored of stuff so quickly.

MamaToTheBabyBears · 17/11/2019 15:57

Love hearing what you've all got so far! Some fab bargains here too!

@DelurkingAJ Oh that's so sweet! I hope you repair it in time, such a lovely meaningful present!
@Leflic how thoughtful of your mum! Her stockings sound amazing! I think doing it secondhand makes it even more meaningful as more time goes into finding treasures that'll be loved!
@DreamingofSunshine as an adult I'd be more than happy with something secondhand that I'd use/want! Books or clothes etc! And even better with children as you say they do grow so fast! Hope you win the auction Grin

I've picked up some pristine jigsaws from a charity shop for DS. He is mad for them and gets through them quickly. Also when my DC asked what I wanted, I asked for a second hand CD, DVD or book. They can choose in a charity shop or DH will go on Music Magpie for them. They are so keen to buy us gifts and this seems to make so much sense.

The Chalet School books are such a fab gift! I was looking for DD and they all seemed to be out of print.

BeanBag7 · 18/11/2019 15:22

Elefun for £6 instead of £25. Looks brand new and is still in the box.

Balance bike for £10 which has an RRP of £100

Some playmobil on Ebay for less than half the retail price. All the pieces there and boxed.

DD is only 2 she would have no idea it's not brand new.

jobbymcginty · 18/11/2019 15:33

I'll post pics once da is in bed last year I got him the ikea kitchen for £20'wasnlike new and as previous poster said it's already assembled Bosnia bonus .
My ds will be 3 in feb I managed to get him a mini micro scooter for £20 in his favourite colour purple. For his Christmas I've bought a 2nd hand playmobile rubbish lorry of eBay that's all he's asked Santa for.
John Deere mega block set of Facebook and books and dvds from charity shop . My eldest ds is 13 and I wish I'd bought 2nd hand for him but back then it wasn't as easy as it is now

TakeMeToYourLiar · 18/11/2019 15:44

DS is 3, he prefers second hand as already assembled!

For his birthday he had his dads old fort with a bag of Papho nights picked up for £5
A cranky the crane for £3

He was thrilled

BlueEyedFloozy · 18/11/2019 16:27

We have:
A Shopkins carry case filled with 48 Shopkins.
The Grand Tour A-Z of cars book.
A photo frame.
A book about trains.
A Smiggle snake puzzle (brand new but unwanted).
A set of Toroidz flow rings.
A Barbie doctor.

I'm trying to cut back on buying new stuff in general but also like to save cash and for recycling purposes.

doggyg · 18/11/2019 16:46

We'll be getting DD's main present(s) second hand as she's asked for lord of the rings / hobbit lego. It's 'retired' now so is extortionate on amazon. Ebay and FB marketplace are going to be the way forward I think (especially as she's only 5).

eastmidswarwicknightnanny · 18/11/2019 16:48

For my boys stockings two brand new no tags ninjago hats from Ebay for £4.50 posted

2 build a bear outfits with hangers local fb selling page-£6 - I refuse to buy more build a bear so only Santa would bring those.

Ds2 is 4yrs younger than ds1 so he has had lots stuff out of boxes in garage fifth bday and xmas the nk packaging has been a dream can just get on and play.

Bluewavescrashing · 18/11/2019 16:51

Just today I bought:
Camel Up board game, new in box and cellophane
Singing flower game, new in box and sealed
New slippers in pug design
Filofax with labels

All for £11 👍

Imapoor · 18/11/2019 17:24

I don’t have a picture but I’ve got DD an activity table and push along walker for Christmas in addition to some lovely books from the Facebook marketplace.

My mum sneered at next getting second hand and I don’t think my MIL thought highly of it but saves money and the planet. DD isn’t going to care if it’s been used.

Even if I had more money I’d still go second hand as I love that DD has got toys that were once loved and played with by another child.

Imapoor · 18/11/2019 17:25

My mum sneered at is for getting second hand even 🤦‍♀️ Stupid phone

Monr0e · 18/11/2019 18:31

I've bought DD the our generation stable from Ebay. It's currently around £100 new in Smyths, I got it for £40, in excellent condition

We've also bought her a new bike and managed to get DS a second hand exercise bike he has been asking for.

Goldenphoenix · 18/11/2019 18:51

Ooh loads! Lots of second hand books, a playmobile set, a microscope from ebay (new in box!), ski trousers for my husband and some dressing up clothes. I love a bargain and am conscious of the environmental impact. My kids don't have a problem with second hand and long may it continue!

Lima45 · 18/11/2019 20:07

I got the family edition trivial pursuit from eBay for £7 including p&p. It looks brand new, and will be great for all of us on Christmas day (technically it's for our 8 year old but we'll be playing with her)
