Can anyone help with pre lit garland questions please?

This year Iv decided I want a pre lit lovely garland for my stairs. It has to be one with batteries due to lack of nearby plug sockets. Iv seen what look like lovely ones on studio but have never ordered off there? Are they ok?

Also I don’t know which bit/how long? I had have the actual bannister which is 69 inches, then I have a wooden post from the ceiling down to the floor at the end of the bannister, not a ‘knob’ like everyone else seems to have. So I’m thinking also wrapping Garland around the post part too as the room is quite bare of decorations. So should I wrap around the whole of this post from ceiling down to the ground (I think so?) if so how will that stay up as the post is obviously vertical? I rent so have to be careful what I use?

Last question, how much length do I need to be able to wrap it around nicely? Obviously more than he actual length of the bannister of course....

Could you post a photo of the banisters? It would make it make it easier to come up with suggestions.

TrickyD · 10/11/2019 21:09

Too many 'make its' sorry

Wonderingwhyme · 10/11/2019 21:14

I will try to get it in a picture in the morning. It’s a short bannister as there is a wall in the way. Where most people have a sort of ‘knob’/ end of the bannister at the bottom of the stairs, mine has a vertical post to the ceiling, like a support post? I’m just not sure if it would stay up as it’s vertical?

I’m thinking with the bannister getting some of those clear sort of cable ties? What does everyone else use?

Ive never used one but fit the vertical post I'd use command hooks to hang it on.

TrickyD · 10/11/2019 22:02

This how I do ours but it is not a very good photo of how it looks from the side. I make the loops by attaching the garland with gardening wire to the bannister rail then tie red ribbons round to hide the wire. If the post at the bottom went up to the ceiling a I would do as Paraballa suggests and use command hooks to hold it to the post. You could finish it off with a bow trailing down.

That looks lovely tricky! I was thinking about wrapping around the actual hand rail? We don’t tend to use the hand rail that often, so thought that would be ok? I’ll have to google command hook as never heard of that. The one I’m looking at is the one on studio that is ‘rose gold’ so it has baubles etc on it, is that likely to be too heavy do you think?

Iv just googled command hooks Grin I use them for pictures! I didn’t realise that was their name! Would the clear cable tie things I mentioned work? I’m thinking they should for the bannister but not the post as I think It would just slip down?

MissGiddyPants · 11/11/2019 06:02

What’s that on your landin @TrickyD?

Wonderingwhyme · 11/11/2019 06:06

I can’t take a photo as turning on the light would wake dc but have drawn a rough picture if that helps explain it.

I would imagine that if you put 3 or 4 clear command hooks down the post you could tie the garland to the top one and wrap in a spiral, using string to tie it to the post/next hook as you go. That way you are not tying anything around the post that could potentially dent it or mark it. If you tie the string to the middle of the garland and tie a short loop you shouldn’t see the string or the hooks.
You could then put command hooks under the bannister rail and loop the garland, tying it with small string loops so it hangs invisibly from the rail. The rail should still be usable.
I think you’d need two garlands or it would end up bunched up where the rail and post join,
I know what I mean but I’ve no idea if I’m making any sense.

Barbarara · 11/11/2019 06:39

Oh and there are different kinds of hooks. [[https://www.officespot.ie/3m-command-adhesive-cord-bundlers-pack-of-2-17304--5?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIyeic8cXh5QIVQcreCh0u0ANBEAQYCyABEgKd1fD_BwE these] might actually be easier to use than faffing about with string loops.

Barbarara · 11/11/2019 06:40

Link failHmm
these

Wonderingwhyme · 11/11/2019 06:41

Thanks yes that makes sense. I was thinking 2 separate ones too. Would it be over kill with the garland on the rail plus the post? It’s a big open space and tricky to put other decorations up so thought it would be a nice central point.

I can’t imagine how the command hooks are wide enough to hold up a garland though? Obviously the ones I use for the pictures are small, are they going to be big enough to fit the garland?

Sorry cross post!

OP posts:
Barbarara · 11/11/2019 06:43

I wouldn’t pull the garland through the normal ones. The others I linked to open and close so would be fine. You’d need to tie string to the normal ones I think.

In my head (which admittedly isn’t always reliable) I think it will look fabulous on the post Smile

GingerRogers84 · 11/11/2019 06:45

I used the clear little command hooks for everything last year. They really do work. I had a thick garland around my fireplace and they held on to it! Smile

GingerRogers84 · 11/11/2019 06:48

I suppose it depends on what your garland is made from too I suppose. My garland was like fake Christmas tree material but kind of like a giant piece of green tinsel. The inner cord of that went very nicely into the clips. But if yours is made from heavier materials you might need something more heavy duty. Garden centres might have good options?

kyles101 · 11/11/2019 07:01

For the length practice with a piece of string then measure the string. Obviously make some allowance for the bulk of the garland.

TrickyD · 11/11/2019 08:44

Looking at the photos on the Studio site, I think it would be hard to attach it directly to the command hooks unless you use those big ones. A loop of wire would probably do better.
I would also invest in those garland ties that Studio have, only £1.99 for ten, they look very useful for covering up any visible ties.

MissGiddyPants it is a suit of armour and he is wearing his Christmas hat on top of his helmet.

Wonderingwhyme · 11/11/2019 09:01

This is what my problem is, the studio one does look nice and thick and was concerned about how these hooks would hold it up. Yes I saw those ties they also sell, I was eyeing those up too!

Practising with string is a good idea thanks I’ll try that. I was wondering if there was some kind of ‘calculation’ you did, like when you’re ordering curtains/nets you want 1.5 times! Grin

Wonderingwhyme · 11/11/2019 12:30

Not buying the studio one, you have to open an account and being credit checked etc! Never used them before. Just want to buy one not be credit checked to do it!

Where else is good for garlands?

OP posts:
TrickyD · 11/11/2019 13:10

I agree with you about those sites where you have to mess about opening an account.
What about Wilko? They had some nice ones last year, and have a 3 for 2 offer on , according to their website. Amazon? I saw one which looked very lush but some reviews suggested it was on the thin side.

If you get a basic one you can tart it up very easily. Our actual garland, the green part, is quite a few years old but I add red bead strings , poinsettia flowers from Poundland and some ancient pine cones. With the lights on it looks fine

Wonderingwhyme · 11/11/2019 13:38

Thanks, I didn’t think about adding to it! I was also worried about it being too thin, I think I only need a 6 foot one or 2 6 foot ones and that limits me a little as there’s more that are 9 foot plus, I know I have a short bannister though!
