How much do you typically spend on your DC

Making this post to satisfy my own curiosity.

There is no right or wrong answer - everyone is obviously welcome to spend whatever they wish on their DC, and I don't want anyone to feel shamed.

The reason I ask, is I'm on a FB group for LOL Dolls - SDD is obsessed. And I've seen several posts where children are being brought 100s of pounds worth of LOL's. When I say 100s one picture shared had £850+ worth of LOL merch for one child. Which to be is mind blowing.

So yeah, wanted to see what people typically spent. Wondering if we're being tight with her 😂🤣

I think I spend around £400 on DD (9) which seems about average when I talk to friends and family.

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 06/11/2019 11:53

Between £50 and £100.
I have 3dc.
There have been times when I was struggling when it was more like £5 and everything was from second hand shops.

I personally don't think it's a great idea for children to have lots of 'things'. They clutter up living spaces and make it so they struggle to decide what to play with.
Having said that, you could fill an infinity pool with the Lego we have in the house.

I tend to buy the expensive things as needed eg if they need a laptop for school it won't be a present.
Presents are fun.

That way I don't have to spend that much in each of them at once

HuloBeraal · 06/11/2019 11:56

My kids get books and toys all year. So all in all (I am buying from FC obviously, us and my sister’s family), each DC is getting roughly 120 pounds worth of gifts. Each will have 4-5 parcels to open.
DS1 is getting a marble run, two sets of books and a board game.
DS2 is getting Happyland, a board game and books and a car set.
But most people I know spend WAY more and their kids get a lot more. Mine have enough and I don’t like overwhelming them at Christmas.
They also have January/early February birthdays!

NewNameGuy · 06/11/2019 11:59

50-100 each for my 2, or less.

They get loads all year and loads more from family

Growingexponentially · 06/11/2019 12:00

Approximately £100 per child. I used to spend approximately £500 per child but changed our Christmas priorities a few years ago.
The children have never complained or asked for something outrageously expensive.

Sweetpeach3 · 06/11/2019 12:01

For birthdays is 100 each and their party's. For Christmas I spend around 150 on the main present and 150 on little bits then all new clothes so works out around 400 each. Iv 2DC and 1 on the way so probably won't be as much in the upcoming years as I'm on my own but I save like crazy alllllll the time ! Xx

EmrysAtticus · 06/11/2019 12:03

DS is 3 so £100 at the moment and prefer to get a smaller number of good quality toys. I imagine that once he gets into tech it will have to increase but he would have to understand then that he wouldn't be getting additional stuff as well. We are very fortunate however that DS has a lot of family who buy for him.

TiceCream · 06/11/2019 12:03

I’ve spent about £200 on Christmas for my 2yo. Both grandmas spend about £100 each. Birthdays are about the same. He doesn’t get many toys during the year, I tend to put some of his gifts away and rotate them during the year.

stucknoue · 06/11/2019 12:06

About £150 or so, some boring stuff they need.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 06/11/2019 12:11

Not more than £100.

  • They have a lot of generous relatives
  • They are still young (8 and 6) so their wants aren't expensive yet
  • with being close in age and both girls, they end up sharing most things anyway.

This year 6yo has asked for an Explorers kit and 8yo wants some Harry potter stuff and board games.

PinkJam · 06/11/2019 12:12

£850 on LOL seems crazy! They must have every one that’s available. And I assume they will then buy other type of presents as well? Either way seems a lot.

3littlemincemeatpies · 06/11/2019 12:17

We seem to have hugely overspent again this year and I reckon it will be around £400-500 per child (I have 3 girls) buuuut in my defence, they don’t get bought anything throughout the year other than gear they may need for hobbies/clubs. Two girls have ponies and we use Christmas to stock up on stuff (which they also ask for) think pink wheel barrow, novelty rug, show jacket, that kind of thing and also we can afford it so no getting into debt etc.

We are also in the crazy LOL club and have bought my youngest two the Chalet between them, can’t wait to see their faces!! Smile

livingthegoodlife · 06/11/2019 12:18

I'm guessing about £100 each, main present around £40 then a few bits. Joint board game around £40. I find it adds up quickly!

daisypond · 06/11/2019 12:20

Maybe £100 each. They are now in their late teens, early 20s.

SallyWD · 06/11/2019 12:25

Mine are 9.and 6. I spend about £100 each. Probably less. Cheaper gifts seem to bring just as much joy as expensive ones.

DobbyHP · 06/11/2019 12:28

I dont think theirs a right or wrong answer.

It's my little girls 1st Christmas and I think the current total is around £750ish but I've still her main present to get And then maybe a few other bits if I see them out while shopping etc. Its her 1st birthday just after christmas and I've no clue what to get her🙈 shes our only child and we can afford to spoil her.

GingerRH · 06/11/2019 12:29

@PinkJam they literally had..

The Winter House
All 4 of the OMG dolls (the first ones)
The Winter OMG Ice Queen
The Camper
The LOL Special Box that has the two families
And then like 8 Winter Disco Balls

Think there may have been others too.

@DobbyHP I did state on my original post that there was no right or wrong answer. It was just out of curiosity that I asked.

I don’t have a set budget.

DD1 wants a Switch.

DD2 wants things like LOL dolls and pickmipops.

DD1 wants board games.

DD2 wants a lap top.

I guess it will work out about 300 pounds per child. But I don’t spend the same amount on each child. I just go off their lists.

Barbarara · 06/11/2019 12:45

I budget for £250 each, aim for £150 and spend something between the two. That includes Santa gifts, stocking, advent calendar, new pjs and Christmas jumper. I’m very open to pre loved toys and jumpers.

I can afford more, but we had a few skint christmases and I would rather keep their expectations manageable so that Christmas continues to be a joy, even when they have to pay for it themselves.

They have generous relatives and I know that we’re very fortunate to be able to spend as much as we do so easily.

HairyToity · 06/11/2019 13:01

Usually spend between £70 and £150. My upper limit is £150.

DD will have a £15 LOL in her stocking. I don't like the environmental damage of cheap toys, but she and all her friends love LOL.

NameChangedNoImagination · 06/11/2019 13:06

@DobbyHP you're spending £750 on a less than 1 year old? What on earth are you buying them?

GingerRH · 06/11/2019 13:07

@NameChangedNoImagination THANK YOU!!

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 06/11/2019 13:12

Roughly £500 or so, depends on what he wants - last year we taxed and insured his car for the year, and bought him an ipad because he has never had a tablet or laptop (he's 19). This year I have no idea what to get him, he's asked for pants, socks and whiskey, so I need to be creative!

ballsdeep · 06/11/2019 13:18

Roughly 700-800 per child, 8 and 3
