Lighthearted thread, as I’m sure everyone is grateful for any gift they receive.

Just with Christmas coming up I’m wondering which gifts you are dreading getting (but know you’ll probably get)

Mine are the Lynx women gifts sets (hate it but seem to get it every year!)
Any Poundland creams as they seem to make my skin itchy and red
Anything Bayliss & Harding (I know there is another thread about that)
Cheap perfume that smells like paint stripper
Obvious second had gifts that the giver didn’t want for themselves (it’s usually something totally unrelated to the things you’re interested in)

One year my friend got me some unwrapped Poundland glitter body spray, not sure why as I’ve never worn the stuff and it was clear that it was in the back of her wardrobe from a while ago

@Willow2017 the issue is your thoughtful gift can actually be something the recipient dislikes or doesn't need.

I once bought my parents a toaster, it was expensive, good brand, in fact the same as mine, that they commented on liking so much. Even paid extra for the correct colour for their kitchen, but I don't know where it went. Never saw it used ever. They still toast under the grill.

Littlemissamy · 23/11/2019 11:05

Toiletries - everyone who knows me knows I suffer with horrendous eczema and can only use a few products. Yet they insist on a soap and glory gift set. They go in the emergency present box.

Chocolate with nuts in. I have a nut allergy. So thoughtless.

My favourite present last year was from my ever thoughtful father. A green and blacks chocolate selection which was exclusively dark, nut filled chocolate. Ive ever liked dark chocolate. A hamper with 2 bottles of wine (I was pregnant), nut filled mince pies, a random lip gloss, cheese and onion crisps (again, never liked them), and some random weird chutney.
Quite how the man who raised me could be so thoughtless is absolutely beyond me. But then, this is the man who puts peanuts out at every family gathering, feeds my child Nutella (nuts aggravate his eczema, I’ve told them a thousand times to fucking stop it), and who told me I’m a shit mother when I was in hospital with HG because being so sick was neglecting my son.

Any toiletries gifts. I have eczema and 99% of the toiletry gifts from boots etc. just make me itch to the point I break the skin Sad I have to be very careful what I choose for myself so I don't really want others choosing. Any sets always have to be regifted.

dontalltalkatonce · 24/11/2019 19:29

Flavoured alcohol.

SmithfamilyRobinson · 24/11/2019 23:47

Lip salves (Burts Bees); I now have a lifetime supply.
Poinsettas - just find them sad and depressing.

We stopped random housey stuff years ago with adult to adult gifting which is a relief.
DH bought Origins gift set last year which I got him to return as overpriced and I don't like body scrubs. I like Soap & Glory but just the normal size.

Not the Aldi Italian wine DBIL had the cheek to buy and wrap up as a gift. About £5 (he is loaded) and he was staying over and it was the only 'gift' he contributed towards his hosts for his stay.

My uncle was notorious for random gifts - might be wine glasses, toiletry sets, garden furniture and one year was a rape alarm!

Dollymixture22 · 25/11/2019 00:32

Hand cream

Travel wash bags

Bath and shower stuff

ashtrayheart · 25/11/2019 00:47

I love toiletry sets unless they have got body butter in them, which I never use.

Shockers · 25/11/2019 15:48

I love Burt’s Bees lip salves!

StroppyWoman · 25/11/2019 18:40

Joke ladybird/Famous Five books.
The funny bit it the concept. It works as a card, no one needs the damned follow-through. You flip through it, smile (maybe) and then it's junk.

The local charity shops had stacks and stacks of Five and Brexit books by new year in 2017

Furrydog7 · 27/11/2019 14:36

I dislike bath sets from boots as they make me come out in a rash an d they are guaranteed to make me sneeze lol.

Pilot12 · 27/11/2019 14:40

Nail polish - because I always have beautiful painted nails people always buy me nail polish sets for Christmas. I have an LED lamp and paint my nails with gel polish. I never use normal polish as it takes too long to dry. Every time my son's nursery ask for donations for raffle prizes they get polish sets!

pinkksugarmouse · 22/10/2020 23:41

I want to revive this one for this year. Some of these answers were sad others hilarious. It's just the right time to revive Zombies 🧟‍♂️

The first Christmas after first DH and I separated we decided to go for a pre Christmas meal together with DD and that we would that year exchange a small gift. Very much to show DD that when it came to her we would always be a team. He gave me some Lush bath bombs. 🙄 Only I haven't been able to use a bath since childhood as I have a joint condition. It wasn't a "hate" it was just created a bit of headscratching on my part. No hard feelings I didn't demand the truffles I gave him back. 😁

DogsnKids · 23/10/2020 01:59

I actively like any form of toiletries set, scented candles, cheap chocolates. My dream is to get lavender drawer sachets and some handkerchiefs. I'm a dream to buy for and I wish people would give me all that stuff instead of carefully chosen expensive jumpers that I hate and feel so sorry and guilty about.

I have a friend who is a determined register and gives me horrible out of date chocolate that is going white with age. I also have brown hair and am teetotal and one year gave me some blonde themed joke book and cocktail scented body lotion. And no a book about sheds?

DogsnKids · 23/10/2020 02:01

Regifter not register

IronLawOfGeometricProgression · 23/10/2020 02:48

We are miserable curmudgeons and have mostly knocked all the gift-giving on the head. We enjoy a hamper, a nice box of biscuits, or a board game as a family present, but there's not much that random friends and relations could buy my lot that they would actually want. One New Year I took 22 branded toiletry gift sets to the food bank. My boys would rather have an old school Nanna "fiver in a card" than Adidas shower gel and a wrist band in presentation packaging. Or body spray and a bobble hat.

BritInAus · 23/10/2020 05:43

Reading this and realising how lucky I am! I only buy for about 10 people - parents, step parents, grandmother, sibling, DD and 3 other kids in the family. My DD makes her wish list VERY clear, the 3 other kids I feel I know well enough to pick something they'll love (and I always check with their mum, to check eg they don't have a particular lego set) and my immediate family suggest ideas to each other, so we'll buy things we know we really want, whether big or small (eg tickets to a gig we want to go to, books we really want to read, particular brands of lovely choccies and a certain hand cream for mum etc). I can't remember the last time I got a gift I didn't love!

BritInAus · 23/10/2020 05:44

Although, adding to my post above, my aunt, who passed away earlier this year, once gave me a hairbrush for Christmas. It wasn't in any packaging... and it had hair in it.

nevertoooldforindie · 23/10/2020 06:13

The little sets of mixers/flavours to put in gin or Prosecco. Love gift cards though

Jamhandprints · 23/10/2020 06:20

Anything made out of polyester, clothes or bedding.

SpnBaby1967 · 25/10/2020 20:51

Bath stuff,I hate baths. They are used purely for pain relief occasionally.

Ornamental items, we dont have any surfaces to put them on anyway!

Chocolates like thorntons, usually packed full of ingredients I cant eat like nuts.

Candles, I have 3 kids and 3 cats.....just no (plus see paragraph above)

I love wine and prosecco, but one year everyone bought me these glittery syrups to flavour and sparkle. Ugh, gross!!

I read a tonne of books on my kindle, but very specific about the books. So amazon vouchers are ideal as they can keep me in books for weeks!

Socks I love, PJs great. But no fleecy dressing gowns please!!

OHappyDay · 25/10/2020 21:22

Those mugs with hot chocolate sets in them, or the hot chocolate stirers
Socks

Anything festive themed (eg with snowmen, Father Christmas etc on)
Tacky cheap jewellery (I don’t mind cheap jewellery that I chose myself but it’s always shitty tacky stuff that I get gifted)
Chiffon scarves (I’m in my 20’s and never wear them)

hiredandsqueak · 25/10/2020 21:29

I love books, I always have a list of books I'd like to read. I hate it when people who know I like books buy me books linked to a TV programme so something like "the best Gogglebox quotes" etc rather than a book I'd love to read.

WellTidy · 25/10/2020 21:35

Ferrero rocher

Gin liqueur (not gin, any type of gin is great but not gin liqueur)

Bayliss and Harding

Anything like a candle or room spray that is ‘winter’ scented eg pine cones, cloves, cinnamon etc

Chutneys or pate sets

Pannatone

micc · 25/10/2020 21:42

I hate to winge but I hate getting scarfs / jewellery that wasnt something I specifically asked for. I never wear them!
I love chocolate, bubble bath, bath bombs, alcohol... I'd be happy with a any of that! I'd rather people dont bother buy me clothes as I am a bit of a control freak and I dont like what most people choose for me! I'm such a pain. I feel like if you know the person you want to buy for likes a drink.. just buy them a bottle of whatever you honestly cant go wrong.

coronafiona · 25/10/2020 21:43

Cheap gift sets eg Baylis abs Harding. Nasty stuff, just give me a voucher or chocolate!
