DNephew will be 13 months at Christmas so will only just have had his birthday. DB and SIL have mentioned him having absolutely loads of toys and clothes as they have a large family who will be v generous at birthday and Christmas.

So I thought for Christmas I would have get him some book sets, especially Christmas ones which they he can then get out every Christmas. So I ordered

  • Box of 10 Spot books
  • 4 Axel Scheffler Farm Books
  • gift bag of 4 Christmas books
  • Stickman
  • lift the flap Santa book
  • touch and feel seasons book

I spent almost £30 (our budget would be £40 tops) but now they've arrived it just looks like nothing 😢 is this a rubbish gift?

I have an 18 month old and would be totally delighted with this generous and thoughtful gift. Honestly! Don't doubt yourself.

Singlenotsingle · 01/11/2019 12:21

A one year old child doesn't care. He will have loads anyway. The present's fine.

DaveMyHat · 01/11/2019 12:21

Sounds great to me. It's the type of present I would have liked for my DD at that age. And you've spent a lot already in my opinion.

shumway · 01/11/2019 12:22

Sounds perfect.

princessbear80 · 01/11/2019 12:22

I would have loved this for DS too. He’s 3 now and books still make good gifts.

TheReluctantCountess · 01/11/2019 12:22

That’s a great present! They are things that will last for a long time.

Episcomama · 01/11/2019 12:24

You've bought 18 books? I actually think that's a little OTT.

BrassTactical · 01/11/2019 12:25

It’s lovely, that’s lots of books! He’ll play with the wrapping paper anyway.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 01/11/2019 12:26

Sounds fantastic to me. It's very easy to get overwhelmed at that age. He will have the books longer than most toys.

Acunningruse · 01/11/2019 12:31

Thank you all so much you've reassured me Smile Yes our DC still have all the books they were bought as babies and we read and re read them for years. I guess they just don't have that immediate wow factor though as you say a 1 year old won't know!

Any suggestions on how to present them though? Just wrap each box set or book individually? Would you then put in a larger box? I did think about something like this?
peter rabbit box
Or
suitcase

My intention wasn't to go OTT, more that we want to get him something lovely and spend an appropriate amount as we do in our other nephews but this particular nephew has everything due to having a birthday so close to Christmas.

That’s a lovely gift, and definitely one I’d appreciate over more toys (I have one with a November birthday and one with an early Jan birthday so it can be toy overload!)

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 01/11/2019 12:55

I'd wrap together if he's likely to have loads of other stuff to unwrap.

Twickerhun · 01/11/2019 12:57

Gosh that’s a lot! if that was for my toddler I’d be mortified. they get so much stuff at Christmas from relatives it becomes embarrassing and OTT and my kids start to expect a lot which drives me bonkers.

Honeybee85 · 01/11/2019 13:07

Books are a gift that will be cherished for a long time. I would honestly prefer it over toys if I were the parent. Well done OP!

Yoohoo16 · 01/11/2019 13:09

I’d be chuffed to get that as a gift for my dd.
I much prefer books to toys.

Hecateh · 01/11/2019 13:14

I love the storage boxes, I'm tempted to get 1 each for my dd and my ddil. They are in their 40s

Majorcollywobble · 01/11/2019 13:14

Your nephew will love those suitcases as he gets older and they are really useful . Our grandson loves lugging his little cases around and it keeps things tidier . With those the gift in total is a very handsome one and I’m sure they will be delighted . I give cash at Christmas and birthday but always a book or a cute sweatshirt to open . Otherwise the amount of presents becomes ridiculous imo . Books are always justifiable.

frazzledasarock · 01/11/2019 13:17

Last Christmas my similar ages DC got lots of books. I was delighted and DC lies in bed ‘reading’ the books till she falls asleep.

They’ll be used for years and years a brilliant gift.

BlackCatSleeping · 01/11/2019 13:19

It is a bit excessive. I would have thought one set of books and one toy would have been a better gift.

Slomi · 01/11/2019 13:20

I have a 13 month old. I think that is a very generous gift. And she's starting to really like books now so I would be delighted if she got some for Christmas. If anything you have bought too much haha

Mammyloveswine · 01/11/2019 13:29

That's a lovely gift!!

MyReadingChallenge · 01/11/2019 13:34

That’s such a lovely gift! Don’t give it a second thought... they will be read for years

joffreyscoffees · 01/11/2019 13:37

I always ask people to buy DD books.. they never do. DD will be 18 months at Christmas and is getting very similar from DH and I. She loves the 'lift the flap' books in particular.

SleepingStandingUp · 01/11/2019 13:44

In retrospect I'd have split the books across birthday and Christmas so he could start reading the Christmas ones before Christmas day and then got a voucher from somewhere like Smyths if you buy to a budget, or whatever you got for his birthday.

However I think it's fine and they'll appre iate it being a longer term present not plastic tat
