Best Board games for family with 11 and 13yo DCs

We played The Logo game last night as a family. It was so lovely to,get the DCs disengaged from their tech......I was one happy Mum!

It did descend into madness at the end but I'll take that!

Any ideas for other good board games for this age range?

Dobble
Labyrinth

undercoverhero74 · 26/10/2019 10:10

Monopoly remains a firm favourite for us oh and game of life

whoknows1230 · 26/10/2019 10:11

Cluedo is going down well here at the moment.

Also, not board games as such but UNO, Dobble, Pass the Pigs and Think Words

tmh88 · 26/10/2019 10:11

Cluedo? Sussed it’s not a board game but it’s fun! Just make sure you get the family version haha!

bonbonours · 26/10/2019 10:13

Balderdash is our current favourite (kids are 9,11 and 13). No real advantage to being an adult or child, lots of silliness. The 9 year old is only just old enough for it so not suitable for younger.

Also Family Trivial Pursuit and Cluedo. Dobble is great for a quick one.

Pandemic is a big hit here (DC same ages as yours)

RhinestoneCowgirl · 26/10/2019 10:14

There are some good board games that are collaborative - we like Pandemic

Game of Life is popular in my house. Ours are 8 and 6 so we have the Junior version. We also have the junior versions of Monopoly and Cluedo and they are beloved.
Good old Snakes and Ladders?

And not a board game but another vote for Uno.

reefedsail · 26/10/2019 10:31

Do you want something for a bit of silliness or something more grown up that you can really get into?

If the latter, it's worth looking at what has been shortlisted for the Kennerspiel des Jahres. You could also try to find a shop near you that stocks games for the boardgame-geek market. Ours is really a purveyor of Dungeons and Dragons type stuff, but has a dizzying array of cool board games at the back.

I'm considering Wingspan for Christmas.

highheelsandwitcheshats · 26/10/2019 10:31

We also love Frustration, and I remember loving it as a kid.

reefedsail · 26/10/2019 10:40

Quirkle is also great for something to learn and improve at. We were quite obsessed with that for a while!

PatriciaHolm · 26/10/2019 10:46

Settlers of Catan, 7 Wonders, cluedo, Exploding kittens, UNO, monopoly millionaire

Crackery · 26/10/2019 10:48

We enjoy Monopoly Empire, Ticket to Ride, Phase 10...

Starlight456 · 26/10/2019 10:52

I play orthello with my 12 year old although clearly not a family game.

horseymum · 26/10/2019 10:52

As suggested, a proper board game shop will have really knowledge staff who will recommend games for different ages, etc, thoroughly recommend trying to get to one. We like pandemic, catan, Carcassonne, ticket to ride, quirkl, lots of them have add on options so you never get board as there are lots of variants

GreenTulips · 26/10/2019 10:54

Monopoly Empire is really good, a lot quicker and a lot more feisty than other monopoly games

Yoollyball · 26/10/2019 11:02

We like Ticket to Ride

DontCallMeBaby · 26/10/2019 11:03

OP you asked for more about Pandemic and Sussed ...

Pandemic is a proper board game, you work together to cure diseases across the world. I’ve only played a couple of times with friends - the first time we succeeded within a half hour lunchbreak, the second the game took about an hour and everyone died. I like that variability and the fact it’s cooperative not competitive. Even without competition it got pretty stressy the second game, due the world imminently ending.

Sussed is a card game, you answer multi choice questions and score on whether you can guess other people’s answers or not, so it’s good for families, or friends who know each other well.

I like Fluxx, because it can get quite ridiculous with all the interacting rules, but you don’t have to learn any more than the most basic rules. Also Bananagrams, now that DD’s tendency to make up words is amusing rather than frustrating (when she was primary age it was ‘is glent a word?’ etc every 5 seconds).

tmh88 · 26/10/2019 11:05

With sussed everyone gets given a card with questions on such as “what would super power would I like to have?” There is 3 answers on the sheet a,b,c you have to choose and right down what you would choose and everyone else has to right down what they think you would go for, you all get a score card and think it’s 5 questions per person and whoever guessed the most right for each person wins! Will try find a video on YouTube.
