Best Board games for family with 11 and 13yo DCs

We played The Logo game last night as a family. It was so lovely to,get the DCs disengaged from their tech......I was one happy Mum!

It did descend into madness at the end but I'll take that!

Any ideas for other good board games for this age range?

Co-op games, people, co-op games, where there is no winner you all work together usually using strategic thinking (not as boring as it sounds)

So Forbidden Island is a good one, watching videos on how to play is best rather than reading through instructions. Here is a 5 minute one.

Also Magic Maze where you cannot talk, everyone moves all counters but you are only allowed to move counters left, whereas another person can only move counters right, another player can move up the board. Again, another short video

Non-co-op games, Dobble, Bananagrams, Cash Machine Monopoly (short) Exploding Kittens (have to be a good loser as you can be out fairly quick)

Crikey there are so many games I've never even heard of on here!

Cooperative games are an interesting idea especially as it gets so intense within my family when there's something to "win"!

I don't know of any board game shops local to us. We live in East Kent.

Have a look on YouTube for Wil Weatons TableTop
He is a big board game nerd and it's where we got a lot of suggestions.
He has friends/celebs round for game nights and records them so you see all the rules etc for playing.

Faves in our house:
Ticket to Ride
Sheriff of Nottingham
Settlers of Catan
Carcassone
Munchkin
Fluxx
Ultimate Night Werewolf
Exploding Kittens

AnnaNimmity · 26/10/2019 15:36

All have been mentioned that we like - just adding Risk to the list though. My dcs enjoy that

Card games too - including poker!

Blueuggboots · 26/10/2019 15:44

Ticket to ride is fab.

Blueuggboots · 26/10/2019 15:45

We've got the monopoly card game which is brilliant.

ineedaholidaynow · 26/10/2019 15:45

There is a Star Wars Risk which DH and DS like (I avoid Risk like the plague)

The Big Taboo
221B Baker Street game
The Crystal Maze

LIZS · 26/10/2019 15:47

Yes to Carcassonne.

stucknoue · 26/10/2019 15:49

Risk is good if you want to spend hours, mine loved it at that age before discovering online gaming.

AnnaNimmity · 26/10/2019 16:03

I make mine do sat games nights - they all enjoy it.

And we spend lots of time on holiday or Christmas playing. We took risk and ticket to ride with us this year

Also agree catan, pandemic, carcasson, labyrinth

Can’t stand monopoly

We play word games too - listography is good.

AnnaNimmity · 26/10/2019 16:04

And articulate too

Willow2017 · 26/10/2019 16:32

Smart Ass is good fun lots of laughs as well as frustration. It's good for light hearted fun.

Tenable is also good. Like the tv prob but you have to get 10 things from a list.

We have far too many monopoly sets! 'City', original, 'The Walking Dead' etc.

'Shut the box' isn't a board game as such but good fun and competative if you want it to be. It's good for basic maths too😀 if you fancy a break ftom long board games.

Yahtze is another good , simple but frustrating game.

Italia2005 · 26/10/2019 16:37

‘Obama Llama’ and ‘Taboo’ are firm faves in this house and great for 4 players and upwards

oobedobe · 01/11/2019 19:22

For this year I have got these two new ones, going for fun and giggles rather than competitive!
Not parent approved (like Cards against Humanity for kids)
Throw, Throw Burrito (from the makers of exploding kittens)

poshme · 01/11/2019 19:57

Linkee is fun & for younger ones- dinkee

poshme · 01/11/2019 20:11

And articulate is brilliant. You can get a kids version that plays alongside the adults.

parrotonmyshoulder · 02/11/2019 19:48

Battle for Hogwarts is a really well designed cooperative game. We can’t wait to get our own at Christmas. 2-4 players. Deck building rather than a board game.

Bowerbird5 · 02/11/2019 19:51

Mandarin

Ragwort · 02/11/2019 19:53

Get into card games as well, Rummy*, Sevens, Whist etc. We always played games on Sunday evenings, quite miss it now DS is at Uni (but thrilled he has joined a ‘Board Game Society’ at Uni).

*Rummikub is a great board game.

ComeOnGordon · 02/11/2019 19:58

Ticket to ride is our favourite family board game - we’ve got the Europe and America versions so good for geography too.

But the card game we’re enjoying most just now is Ligretto - it’s crazy mayhem

AfterSomeAdvice1234 · 02/11/2019 20:01

Codenames is BRILLIANT! As is Decrypto. Both word games.

Curious2468 · 03/11/2019 01:57

Unstable unicorns
Dragonwood
Quirkle
Bunny kingdoms
Carcassone
Photosynthesis
Lords of Waterdeep

carries · 03/11/2019 14:59

Discovery Europe is loved by my 15 & 12 year old DDs. Also Quirkle which is wee bit like dominos.

Riyonn · 13/04/2020 16:17

There's a game called 'Auditions' which is a super fun role playing game. Where you pick cards and act out characters/animals/celebs and also do a action alongside it. Honestly it is so good. We played it with the family and kids and we did it for literally hours. I was howling with laughter! i recommend so much. Been a bit of life saver during lockdown
