DH and DF, what are you getting them?

DH: has everything and buys gadgets as soon as he wants them Hmm. Likes football (but reads When Saturday Comes, would hate kit etc). Beer but nothing weird (I got him a beer subscription before and he didn't like most of the beers.) I will probably get him a cashmere hat for commuting. Just got himself a new MacBook.
DF is 80, still quite active. Likes history but actually authors books on it! But I sometimes find something he hasn't read. I daren't buy him wine as he knows too much.

DH is getting a stocking and a hamper this year.
The hamper is bird themed and will contain bird book, nesting box and basket , nesting box camera and various feeders and food. [He is very interested in garden birds and why we don't have as many as we used to.]
Stocking so far containing pears in port, tin of coffee bags, various flavoured gin miniatures to try, a Swiss Army knife and book of whittling to go with it, magnetic wrist band for diy, flexible torch, bamboo socks, after shave.Still looking for ideas.....

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 23/10/2019 19:41

Loving the bid hamper idea: might steal it for dp.

DF always gets a bottle of single malt and a book. This year I'm thinking of getting either "Erebus" by Michael Palin or the Bill Bryson "body" book.

DP will be getting a pile of books and food/drink (brandy, pickles and chutneys, some cheese, some beer). He wants a Fitbit or similar, but I know precisely nothing about them and worry that I'd get the wrong one.

What period of history is your dad most interested in? Would he maybe like a subscription to 'History Today'? Or the BBC used to do a history magazine - not sure if they still do it.

beckyvardy · 23/10/2019 19:48

Aftershave ans some t shirts for my DH and I like the hamper ideas I might steal these

TemporaryPermanent · 23/10/2019 19:50

How about a 'voucher' to take your dad to the Kettering nuclear bunker or Bletchley park? As a history buff I'd love either.

For your dh,tickets to a beer festival?

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 23/10/2019 20:06

bird not bid

Dad - does he like drinks other than wine? Maybe a book with a drink to go with it - so, for example:
a book about antarctic exploration with some 'Shackleton' whisky
a book about German history with some German beers
etc

drspouse · 23/10/2019 21:08

I suspect my DF writes for History Today... We are nowhere near Bletchley Park but he would like that sort of thing. I got him a puzzle book on that theme before.

DH I will have to keep looking!

(I think we'd struggle to get babysitting for any kind of festival we went to together and I don't think he'd enjoy it on his own but maybe something else event like that he would do alone?)

A good one for football fans is The Terrace, lots of 90s inspired merch and items that can be personalised. You can search by team.

My df has everything so I tend to buy him an Amazon voucher.

Not sure about DH. Nice shower gel to start with

I'm definitely cutting down on gift buying this year and will try and buy useful items

orangeteal · 24/10/2019 13:52

My DH is not into "stuff" so I've asked mum to go in on my budget and we're buying him tickets to the British F1. I'm so excited to give to him, he will love! Don't usually go this extravagant but he's having a hard atm so hopefully will perk him up.

For stocking fillers I've got him pyjamas, boxers, socks, F1 team T shirt, North Face t shirt and a Liz Earle men's set.

drspouse · 24/10/2019 14:11

DH would LOVE F1 tickets!

Hmm - the date is just after a big birthday. I may get them now and keep them for that date. Are you booking your DH somewhere to stay too?

I have a few ideas for DH but not sure what I’m going for yet. I might get him and 11yo DS a joint pressie of tickets for a football match to see their team play. Or other options are a firepit for the garden with some toasting marshmallows and nice skewers, books and a bottle of whisky.

For DF I’m getting a sock subscription, a bottle of his favourite wine and an Oxfam gift card.

CoffeeChocolateWine · 24/10/2019 14:18

F1 tickets is an awesome idea!

fedup21 · 24/10/2019 14:21

Likes history but actually authors books on it

What does that mean?

If you mean he writes books on history, surely there are enough history books still out there that he hasn’t read or written?!

orangeteal · 24/10/2019 14:29

@drspouse no as we live quite close anyway, so I'm buying the extortionate £50 car parking pass!

If he likes cars, the other idea I had for my DH was tickets to Goodwood Festival Speed which is also July, tickets go on sale next week.

My DH is more into experiences than stuff so works for him I think (I'm personally a fan of the stuff ha!)

drspouse · 24/10/2019 15:28

@fedup21 yes he does, and just as you wouldn't buy a doctor relative a popular medicine book, I'm wary of buying him a popular history book.

@orangeteal hmm we could also stay nearby but £50!!!!!

DH - hot sauce selection. It's become a bit of a tradition to try and find one that will make him sweat! (He has a ridiculously high tolerance to chilli comapred to pretty much everyone else I know!) Usually get him some nice socks and a couple of books or DVDs too.

DF - Most likely some fancy tea/coffee/chocolates and a bottle of his and DM's favourite wine. My parents have a lot of 'stuff' so usually prefer to recieve something they can eat or drink!

fedup21 · 24/10/2019 15:52

Fair enough! I’d not seen ‘to author’ used as a verb before! I’d be tempted to buy him one that wasn’t popular Grin.

@BearSoFair can you please commend any hot sauces-DH would love this. I got him a Srirachai (sp?!) one last year which he likes.

drspouse · 24/10/2019 16:54

I’d be tempted to buy him one that wasn’t popular
And risk it being written by his arch rival?
(I have no idea if he has an arch rival)

@CoffeeChocolateWine which sock subscription do you like? DH would like more socks if they are sufficiently boring.

OP posts:
BearSoFair · 24/10/2019 17:04

@fedup21 I'll ask DH what some of his favourites have been later on, but last year he had some 'psycho juice' which even he admitted was hot! They do a few varieties of different strengths, the purple label was the one that got him. I'll have to ask him if he remembers it's exact name. Bullseye barbecue hot sauce is another, a lot milder but a nice flavour, one that we can all tolerate!

CoffeeChocolateWine · 24/10/2019 18:24

@drspouse, I was thinking about a sock subscription for DH too but went off the idea as he likes his socks quite plain and most of the subscriptions are for quite loud socks! Whereas my Dad does like slightly wacky socks so it would suit him down to the ground! I’m looking at Socks in a box but not ordered yet. There’s a company called Black socks that looks to do subscriptions for plainer socks.

drspouse · 24/10/2019 18:54

Actually I've had a bit of a Google and sockbutler.co.uk seems to offer a more plain option.
