Well to play anytime over Christmas really- I’m sick of monopoly!! It’s got to be suitable for a 10 year old who doesn’t like long complicated games. If the rules are too detailed or complex then he loses the will to live - and frankly so do I! There will be two older siblings in their 20s as well.

What do people think of game of life? It gets very mixed reviews.

Really Nasty Horse Racing game
Labyrinth

PurpleDaisies · 23/10/2019 17:32

Ticket to ride is great.

Sammy867 · 23/10/2019 17:34

I would go for baffled. Great game and it’s a memory game so kids seem better at it than adults

SwedishEdith · 23/10/2019 17:38

Sushi Go! - finally bothered to learn the rules on last holiday and played it virtually every night.

catwithflowers · 23/10/2019 17:40

Ditto ticket to ride. Catan is also excellent

onmyholibobs · 23/10/2019 17:41

Rapidough- like Pictionary but with modelling clay. Funny and good for all ages
5 second rule- good for all ages

Tableclothing · 23/10/2019 17:41

Cranium?

BiddyPop · 23/10/2019 17:44

I like QBitz because it can be solo or group, suits all ages and can get incredibly competitive (in our house anyway). We have the basic set of 4 sets and bought a sepwerate solo set meaning 5 people can play (there was at least 2 colors of solo sets so could expand to 6 players).

Trivial pursuit?

Don’t drop the egg is great for a group (can play with or without the egg depending on how people react to different lengths of time available to answer).

Chivers53 · 23/10/2019 18:02

Forbidden Sky, Codenames, Takenoko, Colt Express, King of Tokyo (although he may be a bit young for it at the moment and it's a little bit more complex), Labyrinth, Catan, Spy Alley, Scotland Yard.

There's just a few I've played recently which seem like they would be okay, but it also depends what he's into.

kieronsmum · 23/10/2019 18:10

the christmas eve game from amazon

VolcanionSteamArtillery · 23/10/2019 18:11

Carcassonne. Hand down one of the calmest easiest to learn games ever

Clangus00 · 23/10/2019 18:14

Game of life is a looooong game.
How about Guess Who?
Or (junior) Scrabble?
Family Trivial pursuit?

Equimum · 23/10/2019 18:47

We have just dug my old Game of Life our. I loved it as a kid and my nearly 7 year old loves it now (with a little help), but I now see why my mum used to groan about it when I was a kid.

What about Rummikub? Very easy to learn and great family game - always been a staple in my parents house.
Jenga?
Scrabble?
Pictionary?

One2Three4Five6 · 23/10/2019 19:11

Ticket to ride
Fluxx (lots of different versions of this available, some more complicated than others)
Exploding Kittens
King of Tokyo
Tsuro (super quick and easy to learn)
Munchkin
Ultimate Werewolf
Carcassonne
Sheriff of Nottingham (All about lying/bluffing)
Zombie Dice

We have lots of board games, a lot of the ones above our 7 year old joins in with, so ultimately not too complicated

DriftingLeaves · 23/10/2019 19:14

Ticket to ride - Nordic one has holly on the cards.

hairyheadphones · 23/10/2019 19:15

Another vote for Tsuro- great game.

Villainous is a great game too.

One2Three4Five6 · 23/10/2019 19:20

Oooh, I'm going to buy the Nordic Ticket to Ride for my Families December 1st box, I was looking for a Christmassy themed game to add to it (I bought Holiday Fluxx last year)
Thank you @DriftingLeaves

clucky3 · 23/10/2019 19:25

I hate game of life, it's awful. My kids love it though.

We all like ticket to ride, exploding kittens, carcasonne, and Scotland Yard. All good family games that the youngest (7) can play

missyB1 · 23/10/2019 20:36

Some great ideas thanks I’m busy googling now! Dh is very keen to get Ticket To Ride and actually ds is a huge train enthusiast.
I’m going to steer clear of game of life I think.

Cluedo is a classic but everyone seems to love it

Youseethethingis · 23/10/2019 20:45

Santa’s Rooftop Scramble from Smyths is our new game this year Grin

Worlds0kayestmum · 23/10/2019 20:47

We received rubix cage to review over the summer and all of us got really into it. Fun but not complicated

BrieAndChilli · 23/10/2019 20:49

Faves in our house at the moment with 2 adults, and 8,11 and 12 year olds is exploding kittens, banana grams, the London board game, pandemic (but it’s really really complicated!!) and risk Europe.

missyB1 · 23/10/2019 20:49

So I’ve ordered Ravensburger Santa’s rooftop scramble game and Ticket to ride first journey (a more kid friendly version).
