M&S or Waitrose for Christmas dinner shop?

We are usually a Sainsbury's family but are having our first Christmas as our own little family with DS before DS2 comes along!
Very excited to cook my own Christmas dinner and all the trimmings.
Which supermarket would you recommend for the best bits?
Not against some pre made bits/starters etc (in fact will definitely choose some).

We go with M&S, with the odd supplementary item from Waitrose Grin

M&S

Waitrose

BowiesJumper · 10/10/2019 13:11

PS - The profiterole desert from M&S is my favourite thing ever and I got MOST upset with my Mother when she didn't order it last year as usual...

Goldenphoenix · 10/10/2019 13:14

I favour M&S x

cubed123 · 10/10/2019 13:17

M and S

misspiggy19 · 10/10/2019 13:20

M&S by far. I found Waitrose quality has dropped

Ruthsoph · 10/10/2019 13:21

i always get a turkey crown from M&S x

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 10/10/2019 16:37

Waitrose for non-alcoholic drinks

M&S has some lovely things on the website .......

but I'm a Sainsburys bod too (and my Nectar Points are for my Christmas Big Shop )

Sainsbury bakery shortcrust mince pies are hands down the BEST ever Xmas Grin

sunshinesupermum · 10/10/2019 16:41

M & S - not cheap but very good!

MustardScreams · 10/10/2019 16:46

M&S definitely. They have really interesting meats, cheeses, veggies etc that you won’t find at Waitrose.

My friend supplies a product to both Waitrose and M&S and the M&S standards, paperwork and proof the company had to provide is astounding. Waitrose isn’t anywhere near as selective. Tells you a lot about the quality of the produce and products they sell.

Temeraire · 10/10/2019 16:54

Abel & Cole or posh local butcher for the turkey, gammon (and stuffing if we cba to make our own).
Mince pies from the baker.
Waitrose for the Heston Christmas pudding, brandy cream/butter and bread sauce (I’m the only one who eats bread sauce so I get it ready made).

Everything else is just basics isn’t it? Veg, butter, cream, bacon, chipolatas. So you might as well get it from Sainsbury’s.

JassyRadlett · 10/10/2019 16:57

I’m going to throw Cook into the mix for you as well, they have some lovely Christmas things.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 10/10/2019 17:42

M&S and Waitrose dont deliver to my area so I'm doing Ocado, booked it today for xmas eve morning. Its minimum order £90 so I've secured it in advance cwith a very expensive bottle of champagne Grin

Tobebythesea · 10/10/2019 18:37

I was going to ask about Cook! Is it nice?

Kaykay06 · 10/10/2019 18:39

M&S, we have Waitrose but I don’t think it’s any good. No Ocado or Cook but I’d only buy a starter or dessert I make everything else myself, pre made is fine though we do that at work and it’s lovely 😊

Grumpbum123 · 10/10/2019 18:42

Cook the meal for two for £35 feeds my H and I the 9 yr old and 5yr old

Ilovellamas · 10/10/2019 18:47

M and S turkey, trimmings and puddings - the profiteroles are great and they now have a Colin the caterpillar Christmas pudding.

Kellogscocopops · 10/10/2019 18:52

M&S is over processed, over sugared crap. Look at the ingredients and calories.

Just buy fresh food locally and cook it.

Ninkaninus · 10/10/2019 18:56

FGS if OP wanted to ‘buy good food locally’ and cook it herself, she wouldn’t be asking this question, would she?? And if you’d read the question properly, she might just be looking to buy some of the bits, not to buy the whole thing premade (not that there would be anything wrong with doing that!).

Ninkaninus · 10/10/2019 19:00

@fairybeagle we much prefer M&S to Waitrose. Waitrose foods have never impressed whereas a lot of what you can get in M&S is really rather good. We cook ours from scratch for the most part but we do get premade red cabbage which we whack in the microwave on the day to save some effort and time.

JellyBabiesSaveLives · 10/10/2019 19:01

I’m partial to a bit of over processed over sugared crap at Christmas. Mmmm ...

I’m debating M&S vs Cook at the moment
Although if dd finds out there was Christmas Colin and I didn’t order one, I’ll be in trouble

Kellogscocopops · 10/10/2019 19:03

FGS if OP wanted to ‘buy good food locally’ and cook it herself, she wouldn’t be asking this question, would she??

Have you actually read what she said?

Which supermarket would you recommend for the best bits?

As I said I wouldn't recommend any- they are full of crap- especially M&S. Buy items locally and cook them- it is really really easy. Don't buy a processed starter full of additives and crammed with sugar (M&S are terrible for this).

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 10/10/2019 19:03

M&S. Sometimes we get everything from there, other times just bits and pieces.

Ninkaninus · 10/10/2019 19:07

ODFOD, don’t try to make this about me not understanding the question, I understood it perfectly fine. You were being sneery/smug/worthy/trying to feel superior/any number of irritating traits.

JassyRadlett · 10/10/2019 19:12

I was going to ask about Cook! Is it nice?

They do a venison and pistaschio pâté at Christmas which is the food of the bloody gods.

I love doing Christmas cooking but I’ll admit to harbouring a soft spot for the Christmas when DS2 was 8 weeks old and my parents sent us a £100 Cook voucher halfway through December.

—It definitely didn’t all get spent on pâté—
