M&S or Waitrose for Christmas dinner shop?

We are usually a Sainsbury's family but are having our first Christmas as our own little family with DS before DS2 comes along!
Very excited to cook my own Christmas dinner and all the trimmings.
Which supermarket would you recommend for the best bits?
Not against some pre made bits/starters etc (in fact will definitely choose some).

Ugh, strikeout fail!

StarlingsInSummer · 10/10/2019 19:15

We gets bits from Waitrose, M&S, local butcher, Tesco and Sainsbury’s! On about the 21st or 22nd I get the lovely small bits. Sainsbury’s for desserts, duck fat and a gammon. A Tesco delivery on the 23rd for branded groceries, and then back out to our local Waitrose to pick up the bird and get anything the Tesco delivery didn’t deliver. It turns into a bit of a mission but I love it.

Says Kellogscoxopos... Grin

Stayawayfromitsmouth · 10/10/2019 19:16

Coco pops!

Sn0tnose · 10/10/2019 19:25

We always go for an M&S turkey crown but I think Sainsbury’s is looking better for everything else this year.

bbciiu · 10/10/2019 19:50

M&S every time!

Mintjulia · 10/10/2019 19:51

Have a lovely time Wine

Gwynfluff · 10/10/2019 19:56

Just get my meat at local butchers, make a nut roast and then everything else you can get anywhere. No-one really likes pudding. Might get some cheese.

Ninkaninus · 10/10/2019 20:35

@Kellogscocopops Apologies, I was a little too vociferous there.

ChloeDecker · 10/10/2019 20:48

I’m going to go off piste and recommend the Hello Fresh Christmas lunch box. Have had it the past two years. Very very impressed! Better than M and S and Waitrose.

NoWordForFluffy · 10/10/2019 21:14

We're lucky enough to be up north so buy from Booths. But I don't mind M&S.

The only issue I have is that they seem to think most people are catering for the masses. Which we don't!

MustardScreams · 11/10/2019 01:12

Nooo Hello Fresh meat is horrendous quality. It says British reared but it’s mass produced shite, no better than ASDA smartprice meat. Really not ok,

PaulGalico · 11/10/2019 16:42

What has happened to the Christmas threads today? It's not AIBU. I buy a lot of 'good food locally' but love some 'bits' from M&S at Christmas.

Ninkaninus · 11/10/2019 16:50

I think I was channeling AIBU a little too much in my comments yesterday - I’m obviously in a combative mood. I think I’ve managed to go back in each case and apologise.

I’m going to prescribe myself a big huge dose of Christmas cheer today to counteract it, and maybe a glass or two of brandy for medicinal purposes! Wink Smile

Their turkeys are Gressingham turkeys. Same as M and S and Waitrose. Definitely good quality Grin

dramaqueen · 11/10/2019 19:57

Waitrose for the turkey
M&S for the roast potatoes and pudding
Cook for everything else

TerfTalk · 11/10/2019 19:58

Ocado don’t like women very much remember...

Frosty26827 · 11/10/2019 20:39

Waitrose for me every time

Srictlybakeoff · 11/10/2019 20:44

I love Waitrose but definitely m and s for Xmas dinner. They do lovely smoked salmon starters things. Their ultimate mash and potato croquettes are great . Sweets are lovely. There will be some special Xmas things but the ameretto semifreddo is delicious .
Hope you have a lovely Xmas

freetony · 11/10/2019 20:47

They're both very different IMO.

M&S is very much geared towards pre-prepared easy to cook and Waitrose is more about high quality ingredients.

didireallysaythat · 11/10/2019 20:48

Do M&S deliver food?

Dumb question but if they don't who wants to fight their way into town, park and ride, and then drag it back on the bus? I'm guessing they must then

OhTheRoses · 11/10/2019 20:54

Last year I ordered M&S bird in a bird and salmon platter. Overpriced pap. Back to bargainous turkey and boned stuffed duck this year - twice the meat, twice the flavour, half the price. And a mega pack of smoked salmon.

Sainos, pigs, stuffing, poultry gravy, creams and pud all good

fairybeagle · 20/10/2019 08:00

Sorry it has taken me forever to reply! But I have read all the replies and really appreciate them.
I think I will go for M&S as it seems most recommended. (But with bread sauce from Waitrose! Thanks PP for the suggestion, I absolutely love bread sauce but don't want to make it from scratch).

Re making it myself. I'll do the roast potatoes/carrots/parsnips and Brussels (with bacon 😋) but I don't want to be doing loads of prep and cooking which is why I'm asking re shops. I just want to put the turkey/ham/trimmings in the oven/on the stove and be done. Also cannot wait for the Christmas pudding and cake/cheese board which I don't want to make so will buy.

Thanks again everyone and merry Christmas (or is it too soon 😆)

If you do go to Waitrose check the use by dates they are not generous .we,'re vegetarian except ds. I might search out a nut roast but Lidl or aldi has one cashew and carrot crunchy not sweet and no alcohol. Make your own roast potatoes and bread sauce though well worth the effort
