Christmas stockings for teens. Do you bother?

I have twin boys of 15 and a son who will be 20 by Christmas. Almost 20 year old has a full time job and 15 year olds both have evening/weekend jobs, so tend to buy a lot of stuff themselves.

I obviously plan to buy them presents for Christmas but when did you stop with the stockings, just seems so unnecessary.

Aww, I really enjoy doing them. And they (19,17,16,14) seem to enjoy getting them too! I don't put masses of stuff in them; Christmassy socks, chocolates, shower gel, fun stuff etc. And the obligatory satsuma of course. Can't imagine ever not doing them tbh Blush

valentinoandme · 05/10/2019 19:10

I'm in my 30's and still get a stocking! My DH has taken over from my mum now!

Northernsoullover · 05/10/2019 19:12

Yes I do. I was gutted when my mum stopped doing mine. I was in my late twenties.

nancyclancy123 · 05/10/2019 19:14

Right, I'll continue then Grin .

I will always do DS a stocking, no matter how old he gets. I do DH one and he does me one. They are one of the best bits of Christmas

muddledmidget · 05/10/2019 19:16

I'd sooner have a stocking than a main present, they're the best thing about Christmas!

Crawley65 · 05/10/2019 19:16

Still do one for my older teen dc. I like putting in good quality things they can’t afford but like, alongside a few silly things. They’d be upset not to get one!

Ooh, can I pick your brains-what sort of things do you include?

Ivalueloyaltyaboveallelse · 05/10/2019 19:23

My DC is only 12 but so far he’s got: shower gel, sports socks, Xbox game, designer boxers, chocolate coins, Dobble card game and more chocolate bits.

MustardScreams · 05/10/2019 19:24

Mum still does a stocking for all her children (30, 27 & 19) it wouldn’t be Christmas without one!

I will happily do dd’s until she wants. I love a stocking.

KeziaOAP · 05/10/2019 19:26

Still do stockings for adult children (in 30s) - they thoroughly enjoy them, full of I hope useful stuff. My father made one for me until he died when I was in my fifties Smile

june2007 · 05/10/2019 19:27

Yes, stocking not just for kids.

paddingtonbearsmarmalade · 05/10/2019 19:27

I’m 26 and still get a stocking from my parents (only child). And now I do them one too!

catnidge · 05/10/2019 19:28

I still do them and my eldest is 26 and doesn't live at home anymore. I'm going to do one for him and his girlfriend to share.
I put in
Mini aftershave
Costa voucher
Earphones
Soap
Quality choc
Choc orange
Blu tack
Push pins
Socks
Scratch card
Bath buff
Book mark
Post it notes

Playing cards etc

thetardis · 05/10/2019 19:28

stockings (and advent calendars, and xmas evening sandwiches) are the main attraction imho. tbh i spent so long knitting my kids stockings they're for life whether they like it or not Angry

fedup21 · 05/10/2019 19:36

Xbox game

The last x box game I bought was nearly £50-that definitely isn’t a stocking filler here Grin. That would be separately wrapped and under the tree!

Serin · 05/10/2019 19:44

Seeds
Tie
Socks
Card game
Hot choc sachets
Charbonnel etc Walker Bon bons
Paperback
Nice mug
Keyring
Diary
Wallet
A single sprout if they have been bad. Grin

Macmaccat · 05/10/2019 21:09

I still do one for my 23 year old son even though he’s but coming home this Christmas :-( I’ll leave it with his girlfriend to put out for him (I do her one too) my 14 year old daughter does one for me. It wouldn’t be Christmas without the stockings!

MrsBertBibby · 05/10/2019 21:19

God yes. Everyone in the house gets a stocking, including partner's sister who is pushing 70. Socks, sweeties, Christmas bauble, toiletry of some sort, book, ear buds, flash drive, fancy pens. I go a lot more overboard on the kids (15, 15 &12) than the adults, but it wouldn't be Christmas without stockings all round.

SmithfamilyRobinson · 05/10/2019 21:43

We never bother with a 'stocking', just use a pillow case and tie it nicely with a ribbon. I put in a range of things, some are the main gifts wrapped if small enough or the accessories for the main gift. I put in a tea towel in each one [santa]. My DM used to use a pillow case too - youngest DS when he was young and impressionable told me excitedly that I could re-use them ☺

user1573334 · 05/10/2019 22:01

I love stockings. My mum did my last one at 12, and I never got over it Grin. It took several years of me doing them for DH for him to finally listen and make me one, though he's still pretty crap at it in all honestly, he mostly just fills it with chocolate. Mine will all get one at least until they move out. I find them the easiest thing to buy gift wise, even for the older ones.

DramaAlpaca · 05/10/2019 22:03

My 20-somethings would be so disappointed if they didn't get a stocking. It's part of Christmas.

AuntieStella · 05/10/2019 22:04

"when did you stop with the stockings, just seems so unnecessary"

I haven't.

Neither has my DMum, and I'm in my 50s

WaitWhatOh · 05/10/2019 22:11

My big kids - 24 and 27 - refuse to let Xmas pjs stop either Grin they love stockings. They must have toothbrushes in, chocolate, and socks as well a bundle of other things, magazines are a big hit ( and a genius way of both filling it up and holding it upright!
