Christmas stockings for teens. Do you bother?

I have twin boys of 15 and a son who will be 20 by Christmas. Almost 20 year old has a full time job and 15 year olds both have evening/weekend jobs, so tend to buy a lot of stuff themselves.

I obviously plan to buy them presents for Christmas but when did you stop with the stockings, just seems so unnecessary.

15 yr old DS has told me not to bother this year. He’s at a real money grabbing stage where he just wants expensive gaming-related shite and vouchers.

11 yr old is still keen, though, and I’m pretty sure 15 yr old will be a bit gutted watching her open hers on Christmas morning, so will probably end up doing a cheap/practical gifts stocking for him anyway.

My mum stopped doing stockings when we were young teenagers and started asking for expensive main presents I don’t remember being bothered.

This is a great thread for ideas. Thank you.

Mum used to do our stockings up to our last Christmas together. I was 39!

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 06/10/2019 09:59

Stockings ARE Christmas in our family, my Mum never stopped making them for me and my siblings, and her grandchildren, though I need to help her with them now. That said I we find older male stocking fillers the hardest

Arrowfanatic · 06/10/2019 17:54

I remember getting a stocking once from my mum. It was one of my long school socks, and i was 13. It was the year my dad left. Tbh, i cant recall what was in it but i remember being absolutely chuffed to bits. Never had one before or since.

I started stocking with my kids around 4 years ago, so my 10 year old probably remembers not getting them. DH and i dont get one for each other, but then he barely manages to get me xmas presents either so its not a surprise.

Tbh, i don't know when or if I'll stop doing them for the kids. I have found as they get older the stocking fillers get easier though.

I’m almost 25 and have a stocking every year! That’s the best bit!

PegasusReturns · 06/10/2019 19:03

Stocking is best part!!

thenightfury · 06/10/2019 19:09

My DH does my stocking now and has done since we lived together (19) previously my mum did me one. but his mum and nana still do us one too Blush

notso · 06/10/2019 19:38

What do adults who love to receive them get in stockings?
Or is it just the sentimental element that people love?

PegasusReturns · 06/10/2019 21:03

My ideal stocking would include:

Diptyque candle
Charlotte tilbury lipstick
Teeny gold earrings
Posh chocs
Notepads
Books
Phone charger cable

MarshmallowManiac · 07/10/2019 21:43

Ginger we have bought Body Shop Shampoo and conditioner in our stockings too Smile

MrsBertBibby · 07/10/2019 21:55

I would like

Earrings or other fripperies (cheap, obvs)
Chocs, so I can start the day as I mean to go on
Nice smelling something, like hand cream or soap
Entertaining kitchen items, this kind of thing www.amazon.co.uk/Luckies-of-London-Lid-Sid/dp/B007E7WQVS/ref=asc_df_B007E7WQVS/?hvlocphy=9045868&linkCode=df0&hvptwo&psc=1&psc=1&hvnetw=g&hvadid=255997889218&hvpone&hvlocint&th=1&hvpos=1o1&hvdev=t&hvdvcmdl&hvqmt&tag=mumsnetforu03-21&hvtargid=pla-415959030954&hvrand=8765134418138279973

Book can be good.

MrsBertBibby · 07/10/2019 21:57

Oh and a bloody nice bauble. I love nice baubles. My tree is a bloody spectacle, and very stylish, but I adore it.

WellTidy · 07/10/2019 22:14

DH took over my stocking from my parents when we got married, as I took over his from his parents Smile

I love having a stocking and I’m 44.

I find it hard to come up with new ideas for DH, despite him being happy with anything. Last year, I went quite foodie, and amongst other things bought him a personalised marmite which he loved.

Ideas for DH which might be ok for your DSs:

Chocolates
Voucher for Caffè Nero, or even a card full of stamps for a free coffee (I’m not a cheapskate, honest)
Shower gel
Mini shampoo
Socks
Pants
Earphones
Book
Hair stuff
Nuts
A Christmas bauble or decoration
Key ring

I'm in my late 20's and my mum still does me a stocking, that's probably a bit "sad" to some but I love it and my teen/20 something nieces/nephews still get stockings from my respective siblings/their parents.

ConfusedAndStressed95 · 08/10/2019 03:44

My mother does stockings till you have your first baby. Once you have a baby they stop. My sister is 40 and she's just had her first and is miffed she won't be getting one now. We love the stockings because it's all the goofy presents and daft games you can play with each other. Thankfully I still get mine.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 08/10/2019 04:49

I can't remember when my mum stopped doing them for me and my sister but certainly my the time we were early 20s.

Our DC are 21 and 23. Last year we discussed stockings and they both said they were happy not to have them. I used to put in shower gel, underwear, chocolate etc. They both said they wanted to choose their own toiletries and that they thought it was weird that I bought underwear for them! Ds1 doesn't really like chocolate or sweets so they didn't get eaten. So we didn't do them and it was fine.

SproutsRock · 08/10/2019 05:48

Question do you actually wrap the Terrys Choccy Orange, and the Choc coins in the stocking? Because when my kids get theirs I have just shoved it in😧

Bouledeneige · 08/10/2019 22:48

There would be uproar if I stopped for my 19 and 17 year old! They love the whole ritual of going to get their stockings from downstairs and opening them on my bed in the morning. They totally live it.

I have updated a bit so I might get them posh undies, a bath bomb, terrys chocolate orange, a novelty toy, a book, jokey gifts etc. All wrapped up too. And I enjoy hunting for the gifts throughout December.

MrsElf · 09/10/2019 19:59

I’m late 30s and mum still fills my stocking Grin
I think it’s the best bit of my presents (but DH is a bit rubbish at buying things for anyone, including himself).
Last year I had;
Hand cream
Favourite cleanser
Socks
Pants
Sweets
Dog treats
Bath bomb
Bulbs for the garden
Mini bottle wine
Book
All thoughtfully chosen and ‘me’ although they sound quite generic.
If I was to choose for myself (or get mum to embrace online shopping), I’d add more dog gubbins. In fact I saw an adorable snowman rope toy today, so this year I’m putting their monthly treat shopping in a stocking with said snowman peeking from the top, and hanging it up probably on November 6th, but that’s a whole other thread right there
