Which games console?

For DD who'll be 8 just after Christmas. She already has a tablet so we want something the whole family can play with - also have a 3yo. What's going to be the best choice going forward?

OP posts:

Switch

VanessaShanessaJenkins · 22/09/2019 10:23

Switch

TheWorldAsh · 22/09/2019 10:24

Yeah, Switch (not the new Switch Lite though)

ourkidmolly · 22/09/2019 11:18

@TheWorldAsh
Why not lite?

I am also about to buy one of these and am clueless tbh.

TheWorldAsh · 22/09/2019 11:29

@ourkidmolly the Switch Lite is great but it doesn't connect to a TV. So is more of a portable console. The OP wanted it to be more of a family device.

On the plus side the Lite is £80 cheaper.

hairyheadphones · 22/09/2019 11:30

Another vote for a Switch, also agree with older version that connects to TV.

gamerchick · 22/09/2019 11:31

I wouldn't get a switch, no matter how much they're peddled on here every time a kid is mentioned. They're not tough machines you can roughly handle the way a kid can. If you want to go down that route then get a Wii or a wiiU.

Personally I'd go for an Xbox or a playstation. They can be used as media centres when not used as a console.

Imustbemad00 · 22/09/2019 12:37

I’m planning on getting a switch for my 7 year old but he has been told it will only be for use on tv. They are far too expensive to trust him using it as a handheld until he’s a bit older. He has a ds for that.
I did consider PlayStation for this reason, and also my teen would probably play the PlayStation too, but as it’s more for my younger ones, the games he would want are more Nintendo games, Mario, Pokemon ect.

TheWorldAsh · 22/09/2019 12:39

@hairyheadphones Not older. They've released a new Switch with better battery life (known as the 'red box' Switch)

Pinkbonbon · 22/09/2019 12:44

Been a computer gamer and Nintendo girl since I was a kid myself, have branched out into other consoles with Xbox now too.

For an 8year old either switch or a 3ds definitely. They nay stop making stuff for 3ds soon but there is loads of content already out and it lt'll be cheaper than switch for games ect...

Pinkbonbon · 22/09/2019 12:46

Oh but for whole family, switch definitely. The original one that connects to the TV,not the lite (which us 70 quid cheaper but totally not worth that in comparison to original tbh).

ourkidmolly · 22/09/2019 12:46

Thanks. None the wiser though! I can't get over how expensive these games are.

Pinkbonbon · 22/09/2019 13:17

Definitely noticed how expensive switch games are in comparison to other console games. Nintendo has always been that way.

Xbox has games pass which us quite good. You pay around 7 quid per month to access lots of games. But...I still don't think it would be the route I would take for an 8 year old.

I guess it depends what us more important, a console for her or for the whole family. If its just for her I would get her a 3ds xl, loads of cheap games for that now n you can buy the expensive ones second hand on eBay.

If you could see yourself watching Netflix ect on TV then Xbox might be the way to go. Same for any adults that might want to game.

TheWorldAsh · 22/09/2019 13:23

Plenty of titles on sale or less than £10 on the eShop on the Switch.

As for those saying how delicate a Switch is? What on Earth is your 7/8 year old doing? Throwing the console? Stamping on the console? Get a case and a screen protector and you're all set.

22Giraffes · 22/09/2019 13:24

Personally our switch is now gathering dust, was a novelty at first but not used much now. I'd def recommend the Xbox One, we use it for gaming, watching films, iPlayer etc, much more versatile imo!

I'm taking about the controllers, They are fragile.

Then there's the game cartridges which are the smallest things known to man. 50 quid for something that can get lost easily.

The switch is a decent machine, it just wouldn't be my first choice for a kid. I have all platforms though so can make an informed choice.

Pinkbonbon · 22/09/2019 16:32

Tbh I prefer the switch handsets to say the Xbox ones as I find the xbox handset slips off everything all the time! lt's always falling off the sofa. So frustrating xD I think it's more likely to break because of that.

Also the switch handsets can separate and are lighter so if you play them for a long period of time you end up with less chance of shoulder ache (from sitting in the same position for ages).

gamerchick · 22/09/2019 16:38

Now, I've been playing on an Xbox ever since the first one out and have not a clue what you're on about. Maybe you've been doing it wrong Grin

Mind I don't tend to leave my controllers lying around to slip off anything.

Pinkbonbon · 22/09/2019 16:45

I leave them on the arms of the sofa a lot (thick sofa arms though) like you would a TV handset ect and the blooming thing slides off constantly. Probably not the best place to leave them though to be fair xD But never had that problem with GameCube/wii u/n64/3ds/switch (heck even the laptop) ect... the Xbox one just seems to fly off it. Maybe its haunted lol.

Singleandproud · 22/09/2019 16:48

We have a switch, I like the games as generally they can be short and sweet and aren’t as addictive as other consoles and they seem to have a better range of games for younger gamers and family gaming.

I bought a storage case that the games can live in and we’ve never had any problems with the controllers. You can also download free demos and DD is always happy playing these for a bit of a change.

ShitFuckBastardBollocks · 22/09/2019 16:49

Switch. With Mario Kart.

Nat6999 · 22/09/2019 17:00

Original switch or Xbox, ds has Xbox, he uses it for gaming, as a DVD player, watches TV on catch up, he has Xbox live subscription to enable him to play online.

Homealone3 · 22/09/2019 17:22

PlayStation has more platform type games, we have Disney infinity, crash bandicoot etc.
We had an x box but found the PlayStation had more family options

Bubblysqueak · 22/09/2019 17:39

Switch

NotSoThinLizzy · 22/09/2019 17:47

Playstation vote here. Just purely for spyro the dragon and crash bandicoot. When kids aren't gaming on it I'm watching netflix or whatever.
