Supermarket delivery slots

Trying to get organised for the winter months and Christmas. I can shop at any supermarket except Waitrose. I really don't mind and will pick up footlong pigs in blankets bits in Aldi in the lead up.

Does anyone know when the delivery slots open? I can only see up to September on ASDA app.

Nov for Tesco if I remember correctly. Guessing they'll probably all be similar.

annoyingelf · 07/09/2019 20:36

Ok, I'm a bit premature then Blush

I was asking earlier about Waitrose, I’ve checked last year’s calendar (because I am sad) and I booked our slot on the 22nd September last year but I can’t seem to find any info for this year.

PowerslidePanda · 07/09/2019 22:12

Really ignorant question, but what is a "good" slot for Christmas delivery? Thinking that the food will be freshest if it arrives on the 24th, but is there actually a risk that loads of things will be out of stock at the point it's picked?

Also, is it true that the choices are opened up to people with delivery saver passes first?

Sorry if these are silly questions - it's our first time doing Christmas ourselves and we haven't got a clue! Grin

Mitebiteatnite · 07/09/2019 22:15

I'm pretty sure if you have a delivery pass you get priority slots a bit earlier. This is the first year we've had a pass so I'm not 100% sure but I always remember my sister saying she got hers early.

lorn195 · 07/09/2019 22:18

@Celebelly correct for Tesco, I usually get an email beforehand to tell me when they are released in November.

MrsElijahMikaelson1 · 07/09/2019 22:20

I get an early slot offered with Ocado for my pass-I normally go for the 23rd just in case something is not available, but I have never been let down by Ocado ever-unlike my sister during the snow a few years back on Xmas eve and Tesco just phoned and said they weren’t coming!😱

FredaFox · 07/09/2019 22:22

Yes delivery passes get priority though I think they save so many for non priority customers, I have a Tesco pass and stay up till midnight the night they come out, usually late November, they are usually gone within ten minutes, I've always got mine okay though.
Always been pretty lucky with substitutes, always had the essentials, I try and get mine on the 23rd, Tesco don't deliver on the 24th.

TelephoneTree · 07/09/2019 22:27

I think Ocado slots get offered in October (actually no idea, I can't remember). They ask you to confirm your slot earlier than you would normally have to, so i think it's so they can ensure they have the right stock in. Sell by dates are usually good when my shopping arrives.

annoyingelf · 07/09/2019 23:08

I don't have a delivery pass. Wondering whether it is worth it to bag the Christmas and new year slots

OP posts:
RoseyPeas · 08/09/2019 09:49

@annoyingelf
Personally I don't think it's worth it. I have had delivery pass from Tesco and several years at Christmas have had a lot of things substituted or just missing. They don't set aside things for delivery customers even though it's ordered ahead. Last year the driver said he was having a miserable day because he had to tell customers about all the missing items. Poor chap!

I try to get a delivery on 22nd or 23rd and then nip to local supermarket EARLY (7am) on 24th to get veg and try to get things not delivered!

annoyingelf · 08/09/2019 11:12

Rosey I went and bought a pass last night Grin. Decided it would save me going shopping today too. So we will see. I'm going to try for a slot on the 23rd and one after Christmas to get fresh food in before new year.

OP posts:
NoWordForFluffy · 08/09/2019 11:18

That's what I tend to do, @RoseyPeas. It's MUCH safer that way.

Neither Sainsbury's or Tesco deliver on CE itself now. I wonder if it's to prevent being blamed for ruining Christmas, as most people would be able to pop out for missing bits prior to the day (or get somebody to bring them) when they've a whole day to sort it!

Iloveacurry · 08/09/2019 11:23

Just had a look at my Ocado emails last year, and they emailed on 11 October saying the Christmas delivery slots were open.

NoWordForFluffy · 08/09/2019 11:25

Ocado staggers them, so if you weren't the first wave it would've started earlier than that.

likeridingabike · 08/09/2019 21:42

I always have a Christmas Eve slot with Ocado, I have never been let down, in fact it's the one delivery of the year that's always complete and correct. I go for a morning slot 9am -10am if I can get it, so there's always time to go to a supermarket if absolutely necessary. It's a £90 minimum spend so I have one big delivery and stock up on toilet rolls, wash powder and such like if I struggle to spend that much, we're a small family and there's no booze so £90 is a big shop.

Maxineputyourredshoeson · 09/09/2019 21:33

I get deliveries from Morrison’s and previously haven’t had a delivery pass and have always had the slot I wanted. I’ve never had anything not delivered or substituted either. This will be my 5th Christmas delivery from them and I do have a pass this year so will be interesting to see if/how much earlier the slots are released. Fingers crossed it’s as good as it has been previously.

linentowel · 10/09/2019 07:38

Tesco don’t deliver after 23rd or certainly didn’t last year from memory.

sueelleker · 11/09/2019 16:19

unlike my sister during the snow a few years back on Xmas eve and Tesco just phoned and said they weren’t coming!
I had that with Asda, but they didn't even bother phoning. I only found out when I rang to ask where it was.
That's when I switched to Sainsbury.

RoseyPeas · 11/09/2019 19:51

@annoyingelf
I love having Tesco delivery pass - it's just not guaranteed that you'll get everything at Xmas. The rest of the time it's great.

I bet fluffy is right that they don't deliver Xmas Eve so that they can't be accused of ruining Xmas!

NerosFiddle · 12/09/2019 11:04

I got Tesco delivery last year for 23rd. The didn't deliver on CE in my area but I know that they do in some.

Ariela · 12/09/2019 12:01

I don't get this obsession with Christmas delivery slots.
I order my turkey or whatever meat I'm having from my butcher in late November/early December and pick it up when I'm in the village Xmas eve or the day before at the same time as my bread order from the village shop (lovely bread that stays fresh for a week).
I pick up my veg (could get a box delivery) from the local veg shop about 10-12 days before. It's such fresh veg it lasts for weeks in the conservatory.
Any other consumables, milk etc I buy about a week before. It's always well within sell by date and usually the same stuff as in store the following week. I freeze some of the milk.
I do not bother shopping for food after that until sometime in the New Year, although if the local FB group reports good bargains from our local Waitrose I might dive in 20 minutes before it shuts Christmas eve for some bargains - this year I got a lovely piece of ham reduced to about £ from over £30 for example.

linentowel · 12/09/2019 12:40

That’s ok if you have time and those shops nearby though.

NoWordForFluffy · 12/09/2019 12:42

Not everyone is in the same situation as you, funnily enough, @ariela. Some people need the delivery from the supermarket. I'm amazed you don't get that everyone is different.
