Supermarket delivery slots

Trying to get organised for the winter months and Christmas. I can shop at any supermarket except Waitrose. I really don't mind and will pick up footlong pigs in blankets bits in Aldi in the lead up.

Does anyone know when the delivery slots open? I can only see up to September on ASDA app.

It's the number of posts afterwards that say the delivery was incorrect/missing items = had to go out shopping anyway that puts me off doing it. give me a 9.30pm Sainsburys empty store the week before any day. . Do any of the supermarkets publish stats showing the % of non-deliveries/incorrect items on Christmas Eve?

NoWordForFluffy · 12/09/2019 13:12

But not everyone can do that either.

And for me, nipping in for a few bits is fine. I've no intention of doing a big shop that close to Christmas. Too much other stuff to do

RaisinRainbow · 12/09/2019 19:08

I would play cautiously and book for the 22nd, there may be better stock levels and it will all stay fresh enough. Leaves plenty of wiggle room whatsoever may be the subs/omissions etc.

Ocado sent out info today about their Christmas slots... just don't do what I did last year and book your visit to the panto for the same time as your Christmas food delivery! 😁

FWIW, I've had an Ocado delivery the last three years and not had a single substitution. They're not reliant on the shop floor as it all comes from real-time warehouse info so if it's out of stock you know when you're booking your delivery.

Also, if you're not sure what to get, stick 6 bottles of champagne in to your basket to secure the slot - you can edit it up to about 16 hours in advance of delivery. Don't forget though, I've heard of more than one incident where people just got their champagne!

We also used to get a Christmas delivery but don't bother any more.
We get our vet from an organic box and turkey we order to collect from a butcher.
Other bits we just get as we see or need them. I do make almost everything so I'll pop gingerbread dough in the freezer to make with the DCs etc. Stock up on dried fruit in November. Make sure we have basics in, and plan the meals for between Christmas and New Year, but really, it's just a large roast, then a few days of leftovers, then we like to have a ham in Coke and there's a bean soup I make with the juices.
We just have us at home though and we will eat out a few times I imagine. Don't go in for starters/fancy breakfasts beyond maybe pancakes. It's only a few extra meals.

drspouse · 13/09/2019 22:35

(I think pretty much everyone can get a veg box delivered, and we'd rather order the turkey to pick up in case of mad substitutions! We make most bread in the bread machine but it's easy enough to pick up a few loaves extra. As DH says, the shops are open on the 27th).

NoWordForFluffy · 13/09/2019 22:43

Veg boxes can be loads dearer than the supermarket. As can meat from the butcher. Not everyone can afford such things.

drspouse · 14/09/2019 08:43

Well, then, go to the supermarket and get the veg.

Independentcandidate · 14/09/2019 08:54

Well bully for you Ariela. You obviously have plenty of time and money to cruise around all your local lovely shops, a turkey from the local butcher will cost double that of a supermarket. Funnily enough most people aren't able to afford that.

I've had on-line shops from Tesco for 15 years or so and never been left with too many substitutions, agree have it delivered on 22nd/23rd to give you a bit of wiggle room

NoWordForFluffy · 14/09/2019 10:35

Or you could get the supermarket to deliver it, @drspouse! Hence the thread! Xmas Grin

JuniperNarni · 14/09/2019 10:40

Do not use asda. Harsh lesson learnt last year. Thought I was being organised by booking my delivery slot (the 23rd) about 6 weeks in advance because I didn't want to go Christmas shopping with a newborn. They subbed my turkey, pigs in blankets, stuffing and Santa's mince pie to completely nonsense, useless items. Mad dash to the midnight opening, sold out in store too.
Maybe I was stupid but I assumed if X amount of people ordered turkey 6 weeks before they would have said amount of turkeys.

likeridingabike · 16/09/2019 22:03

Why does someone who doesn't use supermarket deliveries and has no interest in discussing them click on a thread about supermarket deliveries to tell people not to use them?

We should all apparently be skipping around the village shops with a wicker basket. I'll give you £1000 if you find my village butcher and baker, £2,000 for a candlestick maker.

Some of us will be working up to Christmas, we'll be lucky if we get Christmas Eve off so why not get a supermarket delivery and make life a bit easier.

drspouse · 16/09/2019 22:07

Because there are a lot of people complainIng about substitutions?
FWIW I do use supermarket deliveries and may well get one over the Christmas period but not to get the few extra things we usually get 🙍

user1511042793 · 17/09/2019 12:06

Some of us work Xmas so popping to the village (I live in a town with no veg shops) shop is beyond us. We are the folk keeping your hospitals open. Anyway I use Tesco never had a problem but I have a pass and usually get the slot I want.

Vintage1980 · 26/09/2019 09:02

Just popping on to say I was able to book my Waitrose Christmas delivery slots today.

TheSandgroper · 26/09/2019 09:46

For those who didn't get their turkey last year www.fwi.co.uk/business/markets-and-trends/meat-prices/abattoir-staff-shortages-threaten-christmas-price-rises

MadamDeMorency · 26/09/2019 14:04

Well, darlings, I just pop along to Harrods and order the turkey to be delivered when the housekeeping is in. The organic veg box arrives the weekend before and the house keeper organises the store cupboard basics.

I then pop along to the farmers market in my Hunters and Barbour to buy the artisan cheese and bread.

Oh, and the delivery from Hotel Chocolat for the treats.

Not really, I work up until 24th so the supermarket delivery is a god send. Morrisons have never let me down, unlike Tesco and Waitrose

MadamDeMorency · 26/09/2019 14:05

house keeper

Now, I must go and book my holiday to Maui.
