Air pods

Would you buy air pods for a teen (just 14). I’ve been adamant she won’t be having them, but surprisingly all her friends have them and I feel a bit mean. She doesn’t ask for much so I don’t necessarily mind spending the money, but they seem so ridiculously expensive for what they are and I’m worried about the risk of her losing them or getting mugged.

I probably would. Maybe you could pay a wee bit extra for insurance?

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 04/09/2019 08:47

I bought them for my daughter when she was 15 and she says they're absolutely the best present she's ever had. As long as you think she'll be careful and look at them. (I have some too and they go everywhere with me!)

katewhinesalot · 04/09/2019 08:53

My teens love them. I was concerned about them falling out of the ears but they don't.

Would she look after them though. They would be easy to lose. I also knew someone who had one of them stolen and this was at a private school. I assume that as it was only one then the thief had lost one and needed to replace it before parents found out.

washyourface · 04/09/2019 09:05

Yes I would [santa]

implantsandaDyson · 04/09/2019 11:33

My 12 year old has a pair, we bought one ear and she bought the other Grin. I was a touch sceptical but she loves them, has taken fab care of them - they're hands down her favourite thing in the world. She's had them for about 8 months.

littlemeitslyn · 04/09/2019 11:35

I don't even know what they are !

Imustbemad00 · 04/09/2019 12:19

I think I’d have to enforce a rule about not taking them to school. She really would love them.
We live in London and I’m genuinely concerned about someone on the street taking them off her.

We bought them for my 14yo last Christmas. He had asked for them for his bday but my sis put us off, saying he would lose them etc.
But he is extremely careful with his stuff, and is such a good boy. He didn't even ask at Christmas, all he asked for were marbles, bless him. His face when he saw them was wonderful!
And he takes them to school for the bus etc. He loves them and now DH has bought a pair too.

ExpletiveDelighted · 04/09/2019 19:34

What is so special about them? (genuine question, not sarcasm). I'm tired of bluetooth earphones that are fiddly to charge, fall out, go flat, fail to connect.

Legomadx2 · 04/09/2019 19:35

How much are they?

Imustbemad00 · 04/09/2019 19:41

@ExpletiveDelighted I literally have no idea. Personally I think it’s ridiculous, they’re around the £150 region and I really don’t see what makes them so special. I was adamant I’d never pay for them but now I’m tempted. The kids seem to love them although I think it’s more of a status/fashion thing than anything else.

Having just googled, they do sound like a cut above all my cheapy ones.

RedPandaFluff · 04/09/2019 20:07

They are clever little gadgets, @Imustbemad00 - I use mine all the time. But as with most Apple products they're beautifully designed and really nice to use . . . just a bit overpriced and there are better ones on the market. The sound quality isn't great (zero noise cancellation) and they're not rain/sweat/waterproof so no good for exercising.

I think they're just "special" because they're work so easily and smoothly with iPhones, and they have some nice features (you can change what tapping them does etc.)

RevealTheLegend · 04/09/2019 20:07

They.just.work

Connect easily, last ages on a charge, comfy, don’t fall out. Not the best sound quality on the market if you’re a total audiophile, but absolutely just fine for — normal people— anyone else.

I love the convenience. Tiny case that fits in a pocket. You can take them anywhere and everywhere.

RevealTheLegend · 04/09/2019 20:14

Oh. And my favourite feature is that if you only put one in then it automatically switches the sound to mono. Great if you often wear them out and about but want to listen for traffic etc. I got sick of switching the mono on and off with wired, headphones.

But I agree with the PP. Very typical Apple. Works brilliantly, fantastic design, somewhat overpriced and better products probably are available.

lotusbell · 07/09/2019 20:52

My son is 12 and got them with Christmas/birthday money. He doesn't even have an iPhone but is hoping we can swap his Samsung for one for Christmas. I was adamant they were a waste of money and he could some perfectly good copies for less money but he really wanted them, so his money and all that. He loves them but definitely not allowed to take them to school!

ExpletiveDelighted · 07/09/2019 21:12

So do they work with non Apple products? I have an Iphone but often listen to BBC Sounds through my laptop at work.

QueenofallIsee · 07/09/2019 21:16

Got 2 of mine AirPods and one the ‘Beats’ wireless noise cancelling headphones - hands down most used gifts I have even given despite the ruinous expense. My lot are 12 and 14 (twins) - price per use wise, peanuts!

Also good warranty and after care (the beats got a loose wire and they were fixed no questions asked)

Bacawill · 07/09/2019 21:50

I just bought myself a cheapie version on an Amazon lightning deal to try them out and see if I'd get on with them before shelling out on the proper ones. Love them but they work so well I don't think I'm going to get the real ones until anything happens to these. For under £20 I'm really pleased.

Imustbemad00 · 07/09/2019 22:23

I think I’m persuaded to get them.
My only concern is her being a target for teenage thief’s Sad

They are no use without the charging case, as you need that to pair them. And the case can be located with find my iPhone.

Also each individual pod (if in range) can be set to make a very loud noise, to help you find it if you drop it.

BrokenWing · 08/09/2019 22:57

Can the case be located with find my iphone? I thought it was just the earbuds and only if they are out the case and connected via blue tooth to an IOS device..

Pachonga · 08/09/2019 23:03

Yes, we got all our kids a pair for Christmas last year and they all absolutely love them. Me and DH have them now and concur. Amazing for exercise, bed and just generally pottering about

Case is small enough to store in secret pocket in a bag. You can also buy cheap cases with hooks on to secure them inside bags if you’re worried about theft.

Jammiebammie · 08/09/2019 23:08

I’ve just bought them for dd2s Xmas, she will be 13 just after. I am worried about her losing them tbh but she is careful and I think she’ll treasure them. I don’t mind spending the money if it’s something she will love and get a lot of use out of.

Amazon have the latest ones on sale which is pretty unheard of, I got the wireless ones for £165 (usually £199) but they also have the ones with the charging case for £144 (usually £159)

Pachonga · 08/09/2019 23:13

@Jammiebammie What’s the difference between the ones with the charging case and the wireless ones?
