Air pods

Would you buy air pods for a teen (just 14). I’ve been adamant she won’t be having them, but surprisingly all her friends have them and I feel a bit mean. She doesn’t ask for much so I don’t necessarily mind spending the money, but they seem so ridiculously expensive for what they are and I’m worried about the risk of her losing them or getting mugged.

The wireless ones you can pop the case on top of
a wireless charger without having to plug it in, the other ones you have to connect to the cable to charge.
You can buy the wireless case separately but it’s £79.99, dd already has a wireless charger for her phone so thought it was a better deal going for those ones.

AlbertWinestein · 08/09/2019 23:24

Yep. All my kids have them. My only stipulation was if they lost one, they replace it themselves.

fergusthefrog · 08/09/2019 23:26

They are good. My only issue is I lost one (I'm mid twenties and have never really lost anything as valuable so far!) in my car and we had to take it to the garage and they took my seat apart to get it back as it fell down such a narrow gap. I didn't feel it fall out and I was suddenly distracted by my DNiece waking up suddenly so I would say they're fab but definitely be careful!

Find my iPhone worked BRILLIANTLY though. So advise she makes sure she uses that if she loses it.

Macmaccat · 09/09/2019 06:50

I bought them last year for my middle 2 (they were 13 and 17) best present ever they said. They both use them every day and surprisingly they haven’t been lost yet. They keep telling me I need them too!

My teen DS got a pair last Christmas and he's always got them with him. I would never have believed he'd be able to hang on anything this long but clearly he loves them! Great gift and - apparently - having something he treasures teaches responsibility.

BigSandyBalls2015 · 09/09/2019 10:12

DH bought me some last Christmas as a surprise, and I'm amazed how fab they are, best thing ever. Sound quality is amazing.

Rainycloudyday · 09/09/2019 10:14

A bit off topic but how depressing that your primary concern is that living in London your child is likely to be mugged Sad

Imustbemad00 · 09/09/2019 10:40

@Rainycloudyday I know, and we love in zone 1 in a nice area, but I feel like a young kid walking round with a very obviously expensive pair of headphones hanging out her ears is a target when she’s out and about. Can’t imagine how much worse this would be if we lived in a rough area.

My DD walks home from school every day with hers and has never had a problem....nice residential area though. But I do understand your concern. Also you can get fakes now which look like the real ones but I don't know if that decreases the threat!

PoohBearsHole · 09/09/2019 11:11

I’m tempted by them but dh was given some “fakes” as a work goody at a conference. I love them - they only last charged a couple of hours BUT as cheapies I wound happily purchase a second pair. But then I’m over 40 and not stick to my EarPods 😂. I think of you haven’t used them you think it's a lot of money to spend but I think they are brilliant for exercise and not getting tangled up! Also you can stow the more expensive iPhone somewhere else on your body!

PoohBearsHole · 09/09/2019 11:11

What about trying out a cheap pair to see if she gets on with them?

Imustbemad00 · 09/09/2019 12:51

She won’t wear fake ones. She’s rather stick with normal wired ones if that was the option l, apparently everyone can tell if there fake Hmm teenagers...

I bought dd some for her birthday 18 months ago. She loves them, still wears them every day. They were one of the best things I've ever bought!

PoohBearsHole · 10/09/2019 10:05

That’s a shame 😞 my fear would be if she got them and found she didn’t like th 🤦‍♀️😁

Trewser · 10/09/2019 10:05

Don't get fakes!

Kayjay2018 · 10/09/2019 14:56

@Imustbemad00 my son wanted a pair of AirPods for Christmas but actually found some on amazon cheaper and so that was what he actually asked for (half the price) as he thought the proper ones were too expensive. As he was so considerate (and he actually didn't ask for anything else) we surprised him with real AirPods and protective case last year, just shy of 15th birthday. He takes really good care of them at school, it's at home I find the odd one lying around or have to help him search.

mamabluestar · 22/09/2019 17:46

Personal no I wouldn't buy them, for all the reasons that you've already identified. Anker sell aa couple of different versions that I would look at initially

italianfiat · 30/09/2019 18:25

I used to love mine, until I used DD's beats x which feel and sound ten times better. I understand for teens it's all about the brand over sound quality, it £150 is pretty expensive to look the part imo
