Christmas tree lights: white or multicoloured??

I’ve been looking to buy a Christmas tree from a certain brand I’ve fallen in love with. I’d really like one with built in lights because for some reason putting the lights on the tree is the one job that fills me with rage and is bound to cause one of those pointless bickery arguments between me and Mr BoM.

However the ones with coloured lights are a lot more expensive in what is already an expensive tree! I have always have coloured lights though and don’t think white are as pretty or festive.

Convince me why white lights are a good thing!

We always used to go for white / clear but last year I decided to go retro for a change. Got lots of multicoloured lights and decorations and it looked amazing.
I want a multicoloured tree too!

icecreamsundae32 · 08/07/2019 07:21

White!
Question though, as I considered a pre lit tree last year, what happens when the lights start going?!

NoWordForFluffy · 08/07/2019 07:25

They're LED so should last as long as the tree, I'd think! And there's so many lights that even if you did lose a couple you wouldn't notice.

DecomposingComposers · 08/07/2019 07:26

I prefer white lights but I can't find any bright ones. The only ones I've seen are really dim and you can barely see them.

Can anyone recommend either brighter ones or bigger ones?

NoWordForFluffy · 08/07/2019 07:26

If you don't have the budget for a BH tree, try here: www.werchristmas.co.uk/

It's where we got ours and there's a flash sale on too.

greathat · 08/07/2019 17:02

But when the lights break, and you know they will, would you have to get a whole new tree?

NoWordForFluffy · 08/07/2019 18:05

LED lights have about a 50,000 hour lifespan, apparently. That's a whole load of Christmases! Your tree would be knackered before the lights!

2littleninjas · 08/07/2019 19:25

Coloured lights are so festive and lovely though

Floralnomad · 08/07/2019 20:55

The Balsam hill lights have replaceable bulbs

lotusbell · 08/07/2019 21:19

Are the BH ones worth the money? My boss bought one last year. I have a fairly new, fairly decent one but the lights always, always piss me off! Can never get them evenly spread out etc, despite trying the hanging them vertical method as well. I'd like a pre lit one. Having said that, no one gives a toss in our house, DS12 put his IP in his room but didnt really care, DSD11 didnt even bother getting hers out of the box and OH not arsed either so I said I wasnt bothering next(this) year. I have one made from branches which you hang on the wall so was thinking if putting that up but think I'd miss having a proper tree up. Then again, I'm always itching to get the house back to normal come Boxing Day so maybe splurging on a new BH tree is a bit silly Confused

Ivalueloyaltyaboveallelse · 08/07/2019 21:22

Warm white always

happyhillock · 08/07/2019 21:27

I prefere coloured

CharminglyGawky · 08/07/2019 21:40

I bought my Balsam hill tree in July a few years ago. It arrived in a box that was clearly a Christmas tree in the middle of a heatwave being carried by a very bemused delivery man. My husband denied all knowledge and blamed me when he took it in Grin

I have coloured lights, on a string not inbuilt, but think any lights on trees look lovely. Last year the best trees in windows near us were warm white lights. As long as you have nice decorations then you have lots of colour!

MiniMum97 · 08/07/2019 22:14

I have a set of static white, a set of twinkly white and a set of red berry. Looks lovely!

Floralnomad · 08/07/2019 22:46

The BH trees are definitely worth the money , particularly if you buy in the sales , and they have a lot of sales .

IamChipmunk · 11/07/2019 19:45

I have coloured twinkly lights on our little hall tree and white twinkly on the big lounge tree. Generally I prefer white but last year got a new tree for family room (new house!) and its got built in lights that do coloured OR white!!
I have to say the coloured look best with the decorations we have on that one (red silver, turquoise and navy plus all the kids bits!)

It was £100 i think from range, was very impressed with it.

Bansheezus · 11/07/2019 19:51

Coloured lights for me. But the old fashioned sort, none of those emergency services blue bulbs you often see these days and none of those sad dim lights either. Give me some festive glare!

Warm white lights are nice on outdoor trees.

spinderella78 · 11/07/2019 21:51

White if no kids, coloured if you have any!

SuzieBishop · 12/07/2019 14:30

Anyone commenting it’s july - it’s the Christmas board?!
Anyway - multi coloured lights all the way!!!

70sWitch · 29/07/2019 20:56

I usually prefer white, but going retro this year with coloured. But NOT leds. Too harsh and no pink.

In your situation I'd get the white.

Fragalino · 01/08/2019 07:48

Tree looks brilliant op!
I also used to be white purist but now err towards classic multi colour

Yutes · 01/08/2019 09:26

Multicoloured lights ftw

PamelaTodd · 01/08/2019 15:26

At the risk of being shot for treason by both sides, I put white lights and coloured lights on the tree and switch them on depending on my mood. Dh has been trained to wait until I’ve left the house before putting them on the epilepsy-inducing setting he prefers.

Are you storing your lights correctly? Roll them onto a board/ tube/ hanger with the plug at the start so that you just unroll as you walk round the tree, ending at the top. Minimal hassle and dh is incredibly grateful to come home and find it done as he has entrenched sexist notions that swearing at tangled lights and faffing with a phase tester is a man’s job.

Raspberrytruffle · 03/08/2019 16:38

I wanted to go for candle light on the balsam hill trees they looked so beautiful but dh and dd's trumped me and we went for multicolored lights

BentNeckLady · 03/08/2019 16:49

Multicoloured with proper bulbs. No horrible LED lights in my house.
