I've Finally Given In And Gone Modern. Show Me Your Tinsel-Less Trees?

I usually decorate everywhere for Christmas (Loo included! Grin ). If it sits still long enough it gets tinsel on it! After seeing (Quite) a few posts on here I realised I was having an 80's decorated theme. (Lots of different coloured tinsel, multi-coloured Christmas tree lights, green red and gold ornaments, all different tree ornaments.) However, I saw an episode of Escape to the Chateau last year and they had a gorgeous large tree. It was decorated in silver beads and crystal droplets. I've taken inspiration from that and have decided to go modern I will have a theme of white, crystal and silver. I have bought quite a few decorations for the tree so far and am going to get white lights for the tree. (Green tree, need a new topper too. Any suggestions?)
However, after watching The Stickman and Arthur Christmas last night and seeing all the colourful lights and decorations I felt myself chickening out! Can I really do a tinsel-less tree, can I really go monotone and not multicoloured?! Help, I'm having a wobble! Shock Can you post a picture of your tinsel-less/low low tinsel trees and decorations please to inspire me and get my head back in the game!
Than you! Xmas Grin

Err, you do know is June don't you?

IAmRubbishAtDIY · 04/06/2019 19:36

That's probably why she posted in the Christmas section then.

Yes it's still weird to be this invested in tinsel in June! You've got too much time on your hands if you felt it necessary to make that diagram!

Stuckforthefourthtime · 04/06/2019 19:55

Christmas is meant to be nostalgic and a bit vulgar.

I think that the tasteful monochrome trees are far more naff, and certainly won't date well.

Just try to reuse trimmings (eco friendly is certainly fashionable, no matter what colour scheme) and so don't throw away yards of tinsel every year. Luckily we've got a way to go yet though...

73kittycat73 · 05/06/2019 01:08

Thank you @IAmRubbishAtDIY Flowers I appreciate the help. Smile

Love your tree @booblessmonster. Just as an aside, how do you get the star on top?

No, can't throw away tinsel @Stuckforthefourthtime. I'm keeping all my old stuff in case I don't like it this year and revert back next year! lol Seriously though, none of it will get thrown out, some of my decorations I've had for 14 years.

I keep reading about people sniffing tinsel, and I have tried it and been disappointed Xmas Grin

This year , I will be minimal, not by choice , but I have two new cats who will wreck any tree I put up. They were thundering round the house at 3am (the first time I didn't secure them in one room because I couldn't catch the blighters !)

I was watching an episode of Brooklyn 99 where they are caught in a 'Die Hard' situation, the shop had lots of trees with lights but no baubles. I have a pre-lit tree and extra lights.........that might survive providing its not twinkling .

And I thought about this in MAY Xmas Wink

73kittycat73 · 06/06/2019 19:21

Must try sniffing tinsel @70isaLimitNotaTarget Xmas Grin
Aww, your cats sound cute (Though maybe not so at 3am! Grin ). I had a lovely cat who used to 'help' me put up the tree (Meaning, I was fluffing out the branches and he was pouncing at my hand through the tree. lol). My currant cat is OK. She likes hiding under the tree. She occasionally goes for a bauble but not too much. The worst offenders are my nieces. When they were little, even as toddlers, they would look at the tree but not touch it. Now they are 12 and 10 and they won't leave the tree alone! What's this? "Are the sequins two tone?" "What's this do?" Lol

Ditch the tinsel but keep the multicoloured lights and baubles, white lights are just not Christmassy.

Stompythedinosaur · 09/06/2019 15:41

Would it help to remind yourself that just because you choose this now it doesn't mean you can't go back in the future? Think of it as a trial year and decide if you like it?

BiddyPop · 10/06/2019 12:31

A proper Christmas requires planning. And doing a whole change in decorations requires extra planning, and time for purchasing....so absolutely perfect time to look!!

Have a look at Robeson Design on YouTube - she has a whole load of Christmas decorating videos, including trees of various sorts, and lots of tips and tricks. I think she has done a few more silvery/crystal type trees and other decorations over the years, and some which mix different ideas.

Don't throw things out if you have space to hold onto them, just get some new things for this year and trial new ways of doing things - but being able to go back next year, or to mix in the future.

Do you have anything already that would work with your ideas for new theme?

Are you planning on strictly white/crystal/silver or will you allow flecks of colour in there? (Again, this can help to use some existing decorations).

And don't just look at Christmas Tree decorations.

If you have any silver-y cookie cutters, thread a ribbon through them and use those as decorations.

If you have any little snowglobes, wire those onto a branch.
Pure white feathers that you get out on walks during the year.
If you can find some lovely pine cones and paint them white with some silver glitter over them. Or spray silver.

Look in charity shops for things that are lovely and sparkly (or would be with a good wash) that can be used on a tree.

You could bake "tree biscuits" and ice them in pure white icing with silver edible glitter or paint on silver lustre, or have "windowpane" versions using clear boiled sweets rather than coloured ones.

The pure white or the very pale blue Lindor chocolates that you find around Christmas could be hung using thread/ribbon.

Good luck, and enjoy the creative process thinking about it and finding things to put it in motion Xmas Grin!!

Thank you ExpletiveDelighted, Stompythedinosaur, and BiddyPop for your replies. Xmas Smile I like the idea of keeping it as a trial run. I will certainly be keeping my old stuff too though.
Thank you for those tips BiddyPop, will check out that YouTube channel too! Xmas Smile
I must admit, it's more gold than silver, but I had my eye on this Advent Stable last year. They kept putting the day it was released back and back. It had been at £29.99 all that time. Then when they did release it, it went up to about £70.00!!!

My DH dislikes tinsel and wanted to get rid of ours last year. I agreed to it as a trial and you know what? It was ok! Our tree is very busy anyway with lots of lights and decorations so I didnt miss it too much.

Give it a go!

IssyStark · 15/06/2019 20:18

We had tinsel elsewhere in the house but not on our tree for years. We started with a very ‘natural’ tree with dried fruit slices, homemade clove oranges, walnuts shells, cinnamon sticks and paper decorations but over the years we added more gold and bronze. Pictures of last year’s tree.

I hate tinsel so I no longer put it on my tree. I just have white lights and a lot of decorations, all different colored though.

Wow, both your trees are lovely! Love the tree basket at the bottom of yours Allthepinkunicorns.

I'm not crafty enough for homemade oranges/cinnamon sticks etc, IssyStark, but I do have some in watching on Ebay. Xmas Grin

Glad you liked your tree tinselless FilthyforFirth. Xmas Smile

are you actually thinking of your christmas tree in June?! really?

73kittycat73 · 27/06/2019 19:21

Yes because no one ever thinks of summer holidays at Christmas/New Year do they AnnaNimmity Hmm
Also, I'd like to advise you that if you don't want to read about Christmas prep, stay out of the Christmas topic?

OP posts:

Can people who don’t understand Christmas prep in June maybe just not comment??

You didn’t need to open the thread, and FYI it is posted in the Christmas topic where it’s perfectly fine to discuss Christmas anytime in the year, starting on Boxing Day and following right the way through!
