I got up early to get my red cabbage made and in the slow cooker, potatoes are in the oven part roasting and my sprouts and carrots are prepped and in the fridge.

Who else is starting early?

I cooked gammon and a ham yesterday. Will prep veg and put in fridge later.

TheRebelHedgehog · 24/12/2018 08:19

Will start prepping veg at 3pm when the Festival of 9 Lessons and Carols commences from the chapel of Kings College, Cambridge on Radio 4.

Vinotinto78 · 24/12/2018 08:26

Couldn’t sleep so have been up from before 6.00. Made banana pancakes, stuffing balls, par-boiled my parsnips and cooked the ham. Potatoes next.

Miltonkeynesmummy · 24/12/2018 08:40

Cabbage done yesterday. Parsnips peeled. Everything else needs one ingredient so need to wait until the shop opens at 10am.

coffeeagogo · 24/12/2018 08:46

Pavlova is in the oven will do the cauliflower cheese later - no room in my fridge - argh!

JourneyToThePlacentaOfTheEarth · 24/12/2018 08:51

Late last night I made cranberry sauce, stuffing and cauliflower cheese. I also wrapped the pigs in bacon and made a Mac cheese for the Xmas eve buffet. I'll pop out now to pick up the turkey and some last bits.

posh what's your slow cooker cabbage recipe? That's my next job before the peeling starts!

Clutterbugsmum · 24/12/2018 08:56

Cooked gammon yesterday. Need to cut in half and glaze with a honey, mustard and orange.

And I will cook the beef later today, possibly.

thesunwillout · 24/12/2018 09:03

I need to understand the part roasting spuds bit.
Surely if you do them now, then leave to cool will they not be chewy when roasted again tomorrow.
Was thinking of doing the stuffing balls today, as I have a tiny oven and figured that they could easily be finished in the oven tomorrow last minute.

MerryChristmasArthur · 24/12/2018 09:05

Nope because I'm not cooking Christmas dinner Mum dm is! Woohoo!! So happy as I love her roast dinners and she's coming to my house to do it!! So excited!

Eloisedublin123 · 24/12/2018 09:06

Eloisedublin123 · 24/12/2018 09:07

pin.it/rag2wlj5guusgq Although was thinking of making this

1stMrsF · 24/12/2018 09:10

Red cabbage, cranberry sauce and gravy made yesterday. Will make bread sauce, parboil potatoes and prep veg today.

Looking forward to cooking on that basis - last year left everything to do on the day as was so busy before Christmas and we didn't eat until 5pm ! Xmas Confused

Slow cooker cabbage adapted for slow cooker from Nigella: 1 red onion and 1 red cabbage sliced finely. Mix together and put in slow cooker with the juice of and orange and a large glass of red wine plus a tablespoon of brown sugar. Cook for about 2 hours on high, stirring occasionally and then turn down to low for another 4 hours or so (I don't really time it, just judge by looking at it...)

You can use water if you don't want to use alcohol and you can add some all spice if you want to.

Orangecushions · 24/12/2018 09:15

Slow cooker red cabbage cooked. Mary Berry’s beetroot gravadlax curing in the fridge - normally we just have shop bought smoked salmon, so I am slightly nervous about how it will turn out.

I will be prepping veg, peeling chestnuts and making stuffing later today. I still haven’t wrapped any presents though and the house looks like a bomb has hit.

LittleLlamaontheduskyroad · 24/12/2018 09:21

Me. I'm doing the red cabbage.

poshredrose · 24/12/2018 09:22

I used Nigellas recipe as well, tweeked to suit our tastes. Little more vinegar, a few more spices and a handful of cranberries

Why does red cabbage have to be cooked for so long ? I'm a red cabbage cooking virgin and I will be cooking it to go with hot gammon tonight. Along with cheese and onion mash, cheesy leeks and mustard sauce.

I'm about to make trifle whilst my husband makes sausage rolls. I will make apple and mincemeat crumble. We will then prep the veg.

Firstly, we will eat breakfast so the first thing my husband made this morning is my porridge !

Then we will get dressed and attack the, 'cooking bee' that Christmas Eve is and we're not expecting any guests either !

SandysMam · 24/12/2018 09:25

How do you pre make a cauliflower cheese? Is it the whole thing up until the point you put in the oven to bake?

MeetOnTheSIedge · 24/12/2018 09:27

Stuffing and cranberry sauce made yesterday. Veg prep and giblet gravy stock will be later when it all arrives. We don't do red cabbage, no one likes it. Tidying and cleaning this morning.

December24 · 24/12/2018 09:59

Making my desserts this morning. One needs to go in the fridge when it's done, but I have Christmas fridge and no idea where it'll fit.......

Veg and potatoes will be done later.

MotherForkinShirtBalls · 24/12/2018 10:06

My ham is simmering and I've just put the mince pie pastry in the fridge. Meringues going in the oven next, the I'll start prepping the turkey (doing a turkey wellington type thing instead of a full bird). I'll do the mince pies after that and they should be out of the oven just as I finish prepping veg and can sit down with a cuppa Smile

I think I love Christmas eve more than Christmas day.

evilharpy · 24/12/2018 10:11

Ham is in the pressure cooker with allspice berries, cloves, bay leaves and star anise. I’ll use the ham stock on boxing day to make some ham and lentil soup.

Going to make some ice cream in a minute and will cook the red cabbage in the pressure cooker when the ham is finished.

People who parboil the spuds today - how do you keep them till tomorrow and do they not start to turn grey? I usually follow Nigella’s method complete with semolina for extra crispiness.

GruffaloStick · 24/12/2018 10:11

Ham in the oven overnight, still needs a few hours (not tried this recipe before eek)

Going to make the stuffing soon and wrap the pigs, will probably do the giblet stock too then prep for Xmas eve buffet. All of this may change depending on the toddlers temperament

ToEarlyForDecorations · 24/12/2018 10:14

Cook your cauliflower - some do it whole if the cauli is modest size. Or have it as just undercooked florets. Refresh once it's cooked by draining it in a colander and running cold tap water over it for at least five minutes. Drain it then put it on kitchen paper.

Make cheese sauce, pour it over the cold cauliflower. Grate some cheese over it, leave it all to go cold. Bake it for about half an hour to re-heat and brown off the cheese.

TreacleSmiles · 24/12/2018 10:38

I've got to go to hospital tomorrow morning for a CTG so trying to prep as much as poss today. Will parboil roast potatoes, prep veg and stuffing, make yorkshire puddings and reheat in oven tomorrow. Had an idea that I might steam the potatoes for mash today, put in ziplock bags and bash the hell out of them then reheat with butter and cream tomorrow. I hate mashing potatoes. Is that a completely shit idea bound for fail?
