What to get my mum, getting desperate now

I just don't know what to get my mum. She is early 70's and has everything she needs. But she is having a difficult time looking after my Dad who has dementia and she has been quite down lately.

Every year I seem to buy her similar things; a scarf, jewellery, afternoon tea, hand cream etc. I'm sure she loves all these things but I just feel it's so repetitive and I just want her to feel treated as she is having a difficult time. I would love to treat her to a pamper but she is not one for massages, manicures etc.

Any ideas please, I'm running out of time!

Wonkydonkey44 · 21/12/2018 18:25

Afternoon tea somewhere?

MysweetAudrina · 21/12/2018 18:27

Fitbit?

Wonkydonkey44 · 21/12/2018 18:27

Does she have any hobbies? Theatre trip? National trust membership ?

DelphiniumBlue · 21/12/2018 18:29

Something to look forward to, an outing , and some sort of respite care for your dad so that she can go out without worrying.

Audible subscription? Far easier to find time to listen to an audiobook than to carve out reading time.

AlexaShutUp · 21/12/2018 18:32

What's the budget?

Would she like an Amazon Alexa or something like that? Could listen to the radio/audio books, set reminders and alarms, play games/do quizzes etc.

AlexaShutUp · 21/12/2018 18:32

Also second the idea of a fitbit.

JassyRadlett · 21/12/2018 18:33

My mum’s a history buff - I bought her a year’s subscription History Hit TV. In the past I’ve given her an Audible subscription which gives one audio book a month.

Perfume, something classic.

Trip to the theatre/cinema with you.

Trip with you to somewhere she took in your childhood.

Basket of spring bulbs planted up.

I know you said she’s not one for massages. But what about a massaging chair? She can enjoy it in the comfort of her own home.

TokyoSushi · 21/12/2018 18:35

My mum (similar age) has asked for Alexa to play music.

Drunkandstupidagain · 21/12/2018 18:38

Tablet / kindle ? Arranging someone to sit with your dad for a while and something for her to enjoy ?

AmIIntrouble · 21/12/2018 18:39

My mum is almost 70 too, she got everything that within my budget, she doesnt need money but I will give money anyway because she regift 'd most of her stuff in the past.

AmIIntrouble · 21/12/2018 18:40

Sorry, I am watching with interest.

stridesy · 21/12/2018 18:40

Hair cut? Shopping trip and lunch. My mum loves an afternoon tea...sometimes it's more about the company. Theatre? Is anyone around to look after your dad?

FortyFacedFuckers · 21/12/2018 18:40

Can you give her a calendar and pencil in a few dates where will take her out & arrange someone else to care for your dad to give her a break?

shiningstar2 · 21/12/2018 18:40

More than anything else I (aged 66) I appreciate time with my daughter. Theatre tickets, film, meal out, anything ...doesn't have to be expensive. If she gets tickets for 2 she always makes it clear that it's her and me. She has kids, busy work life, husband ...so the time together...doing something grown up, is the best present for me. If you do this you might have to arrange care for your dad as well op.

shiningstar2 · 21/12/2018 18:42

oh ...cross posted with previous poster.

madmum5811 · 21/12/2018 18:45

Time with you, honestly that means so much to me.
Photos in a lovely frame that is also a lovely gift.

TeachesOfPeaches · 21/12/2018 18:48

I got my mum (50) theatre tickets and she loved that we both took the afternoon off work to go together. Is there someone to care for your dad in her absence?

Poppysball · 21/12/2018 18:58

Thank you all, some great ideas. I do like the idea of theatre tickets as she would like to have that to look forward to. I have siblings so I'm sure one of them would take care of my Dad so that we could go. Is it possible to buy generic theatre tickets to use at a later date or would I need to actually specify what we want to see now?

You can buy theatre ticket tokens from most theatres
