We are being hosted for Christmas by a lovely family this year (our family but they live away from us so we don’t usually spend christmas with them)
They are quite comfortable so don’t necessarily want for anything, lovely home etc quite into designer and high end high street. They are a young couple (mid 30s) and have three dc, ds 7 ds 11, dd 15
My budget is quite tight this year but don’t want them to look at a gift and be disappointed

What do you class as inexpensive and our you contributing food/wine etc already as they are hosting?

Didiusfalco · 13/12/2018 16:11

*are

Following as I have a really similar dilemma.

mummmy2017 · 13/12/2018 16:13

Theatre tickets, or cinema?
Add popcorn and bottles of coke.

Carbsnomarbs · 13/12/2018 16:14

Budget is somewhere under £50
We are taking a bottle of something but they’ve told us not to bring any food (and I suspect they may have bought gifts for us as they are very generous)

Do you have a nice picture of them you could frame?
Or buy them cinema vouchers? (We love those)
Family membership to somewhere?
Cool board game?
A kitchen gadget?
Something fun for the garden for the summer?

NonaGrey · 13/12/2018 16:18

By kitchen gadget I meant something like a popcorn maker or ice cream maker, waffle iron etc

Didiusfalco · 13/12/2018 16:23

Family board game so as to include the kids and then some lovely flowers or a Christmas plant in a nice pot?

keely79 · 13/12/2018 16:25

Could you do some handmade gifts - like fudge or something like that? Tied up in nice bags with ribbon?

SimplyPut · 13/12/2018 16:26

Definitely a family gift.
Popcorn maker, kernels, popcorn tubs and toppings.
Cinema voucher and hotel chocolate hamper.
Selection of board games.

Kaz2200 · 13/12/2018 16:26

Lovely hand wash like Molton Brown, some nice cheese, and a big tub of sweets for the kids, or a dvd for them to watch

Taffeta · 13/12/2018 16:27

If you’re a cook I’d ignore the bit about not taking any food and make something festive like cinnamon buns or mince pies

And then I’d buy them some really good chocolates eg Paul A Young or a massive box of Hotel Chocolat.

Notonthehighstreet does lots of personalised gifts, for example a wood chopping board with “The X family” burned in. Or maybe an activity you can all do together like a kit to make decorations?

AuntieStella · 13/12/2018 16:35

See if there's a themed Monopoly for the place they live (or a place significant to them), a bottle of good fizz for the adults (try Chapeldown?) or some other booze they particularly like, or an artisan cheese if teetotal.

Then a fiver in a card for each DC (given their ages)

That should come in at about £50-£55

mammmamia · 13/12/2018 16:43

Try biscuiteers

Carbsnomarbs · 13/12/2018 17:55

Can’t get anything personalised with the family name as they’re not married yet

And I am not great at cooking (and they definitely are) so would worry that my offerings would go to waste Blush

thank you for all the suggestions so far though Smile

I like the cinema ticket idea or maybe a family board game
I think I like the ‘family gift’ idea as it means I don’t have to think about 5 separate gifts

i think the suggestion for a lovely bunch of christmas themed flowers or a potted christmas themed plant would go down well, with a bottle of quality champagne?

i don't think waffle irons/popcorn makers are really suitable for a host gift as they are too personal.

i think a consumable gift is better than stuff as they probably have their own particular taste.

Howmanysleepstilchristmas · 13/12/2018 21:09

Jigsaw puzzle of an aerial view of their home/ local area centred on their house, plus chocolate and fizz.

ButteryParsnips · 13/12/2018 21:13

Family board game
Extra bottle of very nice wine for parents with instructions to keep and drink by themselves
Maybe - Offer to babysit one night while you're there so they can go out alone?

GreenKangaroo · 13/12/2018 21:17

isle of harris gin- last order day tomorrow and get some fevertree tonic

GreenKangaroo · 13/12/2018 21:18

I was bought one of those-bloody awful tat- what do you do with it? can't send it to charity? Cant regift it?

It doesn't burn in the woodturner!

winterisstillcoming · 13/12/2018 21:20

I've put cinema vouchers in a hamper with some bags of popcorn, sweets etc as a family present before. Went down a treat and it was 4 presents in one.

Misty9 · 13/12/2018 21:21

A family co-operative board game like forbidden island?

Angie169 · 13/12/2018 21:26

Places like Max Spielmann will convert photograph into a jigsaw so a favourite photograph of theirs , family portrait , fav holiday pic etc converted into a jigsaw. Something for all the family to do over Christmas

canibehereifimnotamum · 13/12/2018 21:29

There's a Roald Dahl monopoly that looks amazing! Brought for my family
