Other than a tree, what other decorations do you have up?

I put the tree up on Saturday and it looks fab even if I do say so myself! However the rest of the house has no decorations at all. What else can I buy and where from? I like fairy lights, greens and glittery stuff. I'd particularly like to decorate the staircase and bannister. Thanks in advance.

Big paper snowflakes hanging from the roof beam against the chimney breast.

Holly garland on the mantelpiece, decorated with a pine cones and dried berries

Redcrayons · 10/12/2018 20:09

Currently nothing, not even a tree. Haven’t even got the decs out of the loft yet.

Just not feeling it this year.

ja9r · 10/12/2018 20:17

Twinkly lights. In and out of spindles on staircase and around picture frame wall in den. Actually nothing in living room now I come to think of it which is where everyone will congregate come Christmas... hmm...

LittleLlamaontheduskyroad · 10/12/2018 20:22

Bloody tinsel. I hate tinsel. DH wanted it round the stairs & pictures.

Garland on the mantelpiece & pretty lights. Random glittery stag (was a gift.)

Christmas tablecloth, cups, plates, bowls, glasses, tea towels etc.

moomoogalicious · 10/12/2018 20:28

Lights in the dining room and outside. Garland on the front door. Might put some lights on the banisters

DonaldDucksTowel · 10/12/2018 20:30

Oh god all of the decorations
DP keeps mumbling about ‘living in a fucking grotto’ Xmas Grin

livingthegoodlife · 10/12/2018 20:51

Wintery garland around the bannister and mirror, plus scandi style red felt garland over fire place. IKEA white star hanging in the dining room window. I'm happy with the level of decs.

babysharkah · 10/12/2018 21:33

Garlands in the fireplaces with lights and candles. Stag candle holders and candles on the sideboard. Random Christmas animals in the fireplaces (thanks kids), ivy garland on the bannister. Lights outside, a reindeer and a wreath with lights. Christmas bowls / plates/ platters. Christmas room spray everywhere.

I may have gone slightly overboard.

Zevitevitchofcwsmas · 10/12/2018 21:46

Ours aren't up yet but we are skirting round tons of boxes stuffed full. Every surface will be laden with christmas on it.

The scene from Albert finny Christmas Carol where the ghost presides over huge glorious feast... That's our house, stuff hanging from ceiling, loads of twinkly lights, snowflakes...

GlomOfNit · 10/12/2018 22:14

I haven't decorated yet, but most of the larger stuff I do is natural - I'll get loads of ivy from the garden and stick it round the pictures, mirror etc. (I might also try hanging some spruce boughs from the ceiling and weaving gold fairy lights through it, this year.) I have an artificial greenery swag garland that I tart up with lots of little feathered birds and hang down the bannisters in the hall. The mantlepiece is crammed with wooden German and 'folky' ornaments like Smokers (traditional wooden figures painted like toy sellers or butchers or whatever, with hollow tummies for incense and a mouth that the smoke comes out of) and candles and candle-holders that only come out for Christmas. And a twiggy tree that has little hand-knitted ornaments hanging on it (made by me). There are little crafty things here and there, like knitted christmas tree bunting (made by my mum). If I get the time, I might clear the windowsill of the normal clutter and make a Lego winter village scene with DS1. A wooden candle arch thing (plugs in). Fairy lights along the tops of the walls and maybe around some windows. I don't really decorate the outside because we're set back from the road and nobody can see the house really, but I sometimes fling some lights over the jungle just outside the kitchen window which feels like decorating the kitchen.

Needless to say, this all took years (decades) to accumulate and it's added to year-on-year.

Pick a corner, or wall, or surface that you think needs some cheer or sparkly lights, and go for it! I don't think you can go wrong with (free) ivy or spruce offcuts (get them from anywhere they sell live trees) behind picture frames or hanging around light fittings. Or a vase with some twigs in with battery lights twined in them.

Kitchen window has gingerbread man lights from home bargains, candle lantern full of rich coloured baubles on kitchenntable with light up trees from laura ashley, navy and burgandy tinsel around stair spindle, small tree at top of stairs, christmas candle, red velet deer from the range in bedroom with small penguin and robin from cancer research.

In living room have candles, extra lights and me to you bear christmas figures. Christmas has basically thrown up all over my house

Chickenkorma64 · 10/12/2018 22:38

None. It’s too soon.

BiddyPop · 11/12/2018 09:24

Nothing yet, except the advent calendar in the kitchen and an angel and 1 card on the mantelpiece. (And DD festive duvet cover).

However, my plans are:
Real tree in either the sitting room or family room (DH having foiled my plan for 2 trees)
Front door "wrapped" in ribbon like a parcel (DH idea instead of a wreath)
Garland draped up the stairs
Crib on hall table
Christmas hand and tea towels in the kitchen
Floral arrangement with candles on dining table
And festive covers on 3 of the sitting room cushions

skippy67 · 11/12/2018 11:11

Thanks everyone. Any recommendations for where I can buy a garland?

Currently nothing, not even a tree. Too early. Waiting to finish a school art project this Friday, then we will clean the house and put the tree up

MrsPear · 11/12/2018 11:39

Here is the audit -

Sofa - Christmas cushions and throws.
Mantelpiece - faux garland with lights, candle sticks and cards. On the hearth are a couple of lanterns and a slot together reindeer- they have tartan bows added.
Bookcase - top shelf playmobil Santa’s house and couple of ceramic tealight - Santa and penguin, next shelf big jigs nativity and a couple of plain tea lights, then 3rd shelf Lego advent and nutcracker and more plain tealights then wooden advents on the 4th and on the bottom shelf a couple of baskets with Christmas books and dvds.
Window - star lights
Hall - Christmas runner on the shoe rack and a couple of tin house tea light holders, some seasonal pictures and some fairy lights round the mirror.
Kitchen table has the Christmas cloth on it.
Bedrooms - seasonal bed clothes.

I sound like I live in a grotto 😂

recklessgran · 11/12/2018 11:40

Ours aren't up yet but will do this weekend. Mainly in sitting room. Full height prelit tree with red/ gold/glass decs. Christmas cushions and throws for sofas, candle arch in front windows. Floor standing Santa next to fireplace.Lit green glittery garland on mantlepiece. All normal bits and pieces are put away and shelves are adorned with various Christmassy ornaments/candles/ scenes collected over the years.A few Christmassy dishes around for nuts/sweets/nibbles.
Looks really cosy by the time we've finished.

Lovemusic33 · 11/12/2018 11:52

We have 2 trees, tinsel around the fire place, Christmas ornaments and candles and the dog has a Christmas blanket on her sofa.

megletthesecond · 11/12/2018 11:54

Haven't even got the tree up yet. There isn't room for it so Ieave it as late as possible.

BiddyPop · 11/12/2018 12:11

I got a relatively nice garland in M&S, but I also got a load of fake additional berries, poinsettia, greenery, red and silver glittery shite, and ribbons, to add to it and make it lovely.

goose1964 · 11/12/2018 14:36

snowman and santa bunting (1 of each), soft toys, china santa set, glittery reindeer, penguins , candles & candle holders , old christmas post cards , china sheep, nativity scene, wicker reindeer, excess lights on wall and posh decorations hanging from drawers.

It's not all out yet either

SprogletsMum · 11/12/2018 14:40

We have foil garlands and stars hanging from the ceilings in all of the downstairs rooms. Lights and paper snowflakes in the windows and will have lights in and out of the spindles on the staircase if I can be bothered to sort them. My shelves in the living room have all the normal ornaments taken off and are filled with Christmas ornaments.

WWYDhelpplease · 11/12/2018 18:34

I have my tree plus large baubles off the ends of the curtain rail. Christmas t light holders and fairly lights on my tv unit.

Bathroom has Christmas bath puffs, toothbrush holders, soap dispenser, hand towels and bath mat.

Kitchen has Santa seat covers, lights over the windows. Christmas cookie jars and t towels.

Outside I am sure can be seen from space. Lots of blue and white icicle lights, lit potted trees at the door and a tree made from wooden pallets with lights on. Wreath on front door.

Dustbunny1900 · 11/12/2018 21:03

Evergreen wreath decorated with fresh berries and oi cones on the front door

I'm currently working on making a Xmas kissing ball from winter greens and pine cones with a red ribbon

Red and white Xmas lights on the windows and windowsill

Wreaths inside,

Candles on the table with a small tabletop tree

Needle felted deer and Saint Nicholas

Advent calendar

I just made ice candle holders with rose hips and holly frozen in them for outdoors

MrsElf · 11/12/2018 21:37

I started on December the first. So far we have the tree (likewise fabulous Xmas Grin), a 2 foot too short naff beadchain garland woven through most of the stair spindles, potted trees outside the front door with fairy lights (batteries flat) and a silver plastic gnome.
The advent calendars are under the bed, and I am experiencing serious opposition to hanging my sparkly polar bear head on any wall or dressing the dog in his snowman outfit.
And... there are various huge boxes taking up the spare room and landing, and small boxes on every flat surface. Since December the 2nd.
My decorating is NOT going as planned!
I also have secateurs and wire and spray paint to make garlands and a tasteful wreath with natural greenery and the dried teasels and allium currently taking up most of the dining table. The range has a surprisingly good selection of base material, and that’s where I got my sparkly/snowy/paint sprays. It could still happen, but it looks increasingly like the dreadful garland will remain in solitary possession of the staircase, and our cock-eyed tinsel penguin will be on the door greeting any visitors again this year.
