If you filled your own stocking...

I'm seriously considering getting my own little bits for my stocking and a few bits for dh. Stockings were my most treasured aspect of Christmas as a child but dh gets very stressed about present giving so I'm thinking of just doing it for both of us and not saying until Christmas eve. The dc are asking about mummy and daddy's stockings (FC brings stockings and one present here) so I'd like to do them.

So far I'm thinking for mine:
Nice dark chocolate
Nice body moisturiser
Fluffy socks
Nice pants
Book
Snow globe

What would you put in your own stocking as little treats/luxuries you wouldn't normally buy?

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 09/12/2018 19:25

Good idea.

Mine would be:
a mini Mac lipstick
notebook
fountain pen ink
some vintage Ladybird books
coffee chocolates
Earl Grey
Neals Yard bubble bath
yard of Jaffa cakes
Aveda Had Relief mini
jar of Garners red cabbage
jar of Duchy lemon curd
Nesti Dante soap
little bottle of Port

MrsKetchup · 09/12/2018 19:26

Book token so I can spend ages choosing without guilt
New nail varnish
Nice lip balm
Nice knickers rather than practical pants
Generally the things I can't justify buying for myself even though they're not expensive.

halfwitpicker · 09/12/2018 19:30

Ooh good thread :

Patek Phillipe watch
Fancy perfume
Dark chocolate
Nice socks
Gift voucher for a pedicure
Lipbalm
Bottle of port, as per Remus's idea
Silk knickers, which I'd send anonymously to the guy I fancy

SassitudeandSparkle · 09/12/2018 19:49

I do my own (and my DD/DH's) the best thing I got myself was a one-serving cafetiere and that was from a charity shop!

I also get books, chocs or sweets, a model for my DH to make, toiletries or pamper products for me and DD (this year I've got a bag with socks, eye mask and gloves for me).

LtGreggs · 09/12/2018 19:53

We do this for everyone in the family (adults & kids) every year. Me, my mum & sister usually get a few things each, and everyone gets roughly the same per stocking. We don't do expensive stuff, something like

  • chocolate bits & pieces - couple of mini lindt figures & some coins
  • soap / shower gel etc - often a crazy flavour
  • socks
  • lib balm
  • christmas hanky
  • pen or notepad
  • an orange in the toe

We open them over breakfast.

I don't really understand "stocking filters" that are like £20+ (perfume, gadgets etc) - that's not what our stockings are for!

sickmumma · 09/12/2018 19:57

Oh this is such a lovely idea! In mine I would like...

A nice face cream
Some makeup
Nice hand cream
Chocolate
A couple of books
Nice gloves
Fluffy socks
Bath bomb
Face mask

SheldonSaysSo · 09/12/2018 19:57

We usually do stockings within the family. This year I've bought:
Christmas bath bomb
Novelty socks
DVD
Scratch cards
Body spray
Favourite chocolate
Lip balm
Mug

Misty9 · 09/12/2018 20:15

I should point out that the dc get stockings of course!

Great ideas here; I might get myself a little Lego set too. I'm finally accepting that dh just does not do presents and that if I want nice things I'll get them myself. I felt a bit silly but seems like lots of us would/do the same Xmas Smile

What a good idea! Will be fun to have something to open alongside my boys this year. So far I've got myself silver bird earrings, 2 X chocolate and a Jeremy Wade calendar Smile enjoy your stockings everyone!

HolgerLowCarbingLoser · 09/12/2018 21:42

Almond and hazelnut chocolate Florentines from Aldi
Godiva chocolate bar (dark choc and vanilla, or milk choc and orange)
A hat from Amelia Jane
Costume jewellery, probably earrings, probably from M&S
An Urban Decay eyeliner
Mini Mac lipstick
Chanel compact mirror
Silk scarf (would happily get this preloved from eBay)
Two or three traditional Christmas decorations from Scandinavia, to remind me of home

ranoutofquinoaandprosecco · 09/12/2018 21:53

I've always done my own stocking since I had my DD who's nearly 8! It's a bit of a standing joke with my DH and friends!
So in it goes, jo malone perfume, naive hair bobbles (too good for the kids), jewellery ( this year some robin earrings from not on the high street), chocolate usually peanut butter M&S as their hard to get hold of but I've tons so this year it will be marzipan, a satsuma, gold coin, nativity charm bracelet and whatever else catches my eye!
I'm going to do my BFF one next year as she always jokes my stockings are fab! (She got a beauty advent this year from me, my advents are pretty cool too)!

dementedma · 09/12/2018 21:58

if money no object:
nice knickers
hotel chocolat chocolates
lush bath melts or bath bombs
silver earrings
cashmere fingerless gloves
book token

I will get a stocking but it will contain none of the above.

Kemer2018 · 09/12/2018 22:02

Magazine subscription
Boots royal jelly foam bath
Christmas yankee candle
Vanilla bourbon candle from tk maxx
Box of hair dye
Bottle of koppaberg cider
Canvas or leather shopper bag

Figmentofimagination · 09/12/2018 22:27

This is a brilliant idea! We have stockings but never put anything in them. We're not getting each other any presents this year (haven't for a couple of years as money is tight), but having a few little things in a stocking for each of us would be a nice idea and wouldn't break the bank. Of course I would have to do my own as DH isn't brilliant with present buying, plus it would be a nice surprise for him and I wouldn't be left out.

I thinking for both of our stockings:
A pair of socks (fluffy or cute design)
Some chocolate
A scratch card

It's not a lot but it's something nice for both of us.

caperplips · 10/12/2018 12:43

I love this idea and am going to do it this year - start a new tradition now that dc is a teen and we are moving out of the small kiddie phase.

We always do one for dd but this year I suggest to dh that we do them for each other too.

In his I will put:
New Scientist magazine
dark choc cherry liquoir chocolates
a mini box of sugar puffs (childhood fav)
a small bottle of whiskey
a mini bottle of champagne
Earl grey loose tea and one of those little things to contain the leaves
giant toblerone
nice shower gel
socks
boxers
a scarf

All things he needs / loves and nothing wasted! He will love it

In mine I would like:
a nice lipstick
nail polish
L'Occitane shower gel
handcream
Leonidas chocolates
ground coffee
small bottle of champagne
macroons
socks
gloves
a book

slappinthebass · 10/12/2018 13:57

recklessgran · 10/12/2018 14:35

A lovely bar of perfumed soap from TKMaxx.
A feelgood trashy Christmas paperback.
Some bamboo socks.
Luxury shampoo.
A password book from Amazon to record all my different online passwords in one place so I don't have to keep resetting the ones I've forgotten!
A pack of Aldi or Lidl florentines all for me.
A beautiful luxury glass Christmas tree decoration.
What a lovely idea OP - I hope you enjoy your stocking.

Misty9 · 10/12/2018 18:59

Aww, I'm glad to have inspired a few of you to join me in having a stocking - whether you fill it yourself or not Xmas Smile
I've had to tell dh my plan as the kids were asking about our stockings and I didn't want him to stress about doing it. That said, he seems mildly miffed that I've given up on his present buying so much that im doing my own! Xmas Grin

I've started buying for dh but am yet to do my own. I've got him edible stuff and booze so far Gin I'm a bit rubbish at treating myself and believing I'm worth it so will have to make sure I do actually do this...

OP posts:
GlomOfNit · 10/12/2018 22:31

It's a bit sad having to do it for yourself, isn't it? Though at least you'll get something the right size/you want/need etc! DH and I have a stocking that we 'share' - by which I mean, I buy some new underwear (socks and boxers) for DH, maybe beard oil or something small like that, and some of his favourite chocolates and wrap them. Then I'll buy some really nice cosy socks for me and stick them in too... I wish he'd actually work out that I enjoy the little surprises in a stocking too, and I've told him as much.

The children get stockings, very lavish ones. I do ALL of that. DH's sole contribution, year on year, is to buy DS1 a dvd he's asked Father Christmas for, he'll announce that he's got it in a tone that implies his work here is done. Hmm Our other child has autism and is reasonably hard to buy for, yet I will start searching ebay for 2nd hand toys in the tiny niche he's interested in, in October. I know that the stockings are the part of Christmas DS1 looks forward to the most (suspect DS2 enjoys the fizzy drinks and puddings the most...) so I try to make them magical and really special. DH either doesn't get this, or was so badly stunted by shite stockings from his own parents in the 70's that he has no idea where to start. Either way, I feel a bit peeved that I'm the Christmas Fairy who actually bothers to think about this.

GlomOfNit · 10/12/2018 23:19

oh god sorry! Grin Massive sense of humour failure.

On the back of this thread, I've decided to revive the stocking I used to do for my mum when I was in my late teens, because she continued to do me one until well into my 20's Blush She hoards and needs NOTHING that isn't consumable or instantly useful: so far, I've thought of:
-the little knitting notions I've already got her (wool needles, needle gauge etc)
-fruit tea bags because she's just 'discovered' them in her mid-70's Grin
-the fudge I always give her anyway
-a nice book
-a photo diary
-chapstick
-jar of her favourite Geeta's chutney
-pack of festive tissues
-and maybe something tiny I've knitted her.
There we are. No tat, very little to add to her piles of stuff, fun to open. Thanks for the inspiration!
