Not sure what counts as a modest budget, but got my mum a suki teapot set with a bamboo tray, tea and milk jug. Teapots are very well reviewed. Set was cheaper on online emporium.

About £20 ish. Money is a bit tight this year.

She is in her 50s, no particular hobbies but would not appereciate food gifts. She is not especially fussy but just doesn’t need anything in particular.

A new dressing gown
New mascara
Gym bag

chronicplainjane · 01/12/2018 20:44

Bare minerals liquid eyeshadow. T2 have lovely teapots in their sale and 20% off online just now with lovely sets and gifts.

PippaParty · 01/12/2018 20:45

I placed a subscription for a magazine. I think it was £26.00 and has been delivered every two weeks for the past year. I gave her the subscription voucher in a mug with a tea bag and a message about time for herself!

She has really appreciated it.

I bought my mum a swimsuit. It is something she needs and will buy her some chocolates. Her birthday is before Christmas, I have bought her a lipstick and face powder.

NoLeslie · 01/12/2018 20:46

For my step mum- Memory stick with photos on, perfume I know she likes, decent candle from tk maxx. And similar for my dad.

Lollyice · 01/12/2018 20:46

Have bought a bird feeder that sticks to the window and has a two-way mirror so you can watch the birds close up. Think it was about £13 on Amazon.

chronicplainjane · 01/12/2018 20:51

Subscriptions good if you have tesco points

elliejjtiny · 01/12/2018 20:54

I've bought my mum a tin that looks like a piece of chocolate cake and I've made some biscuits to put inside. My budget is smaller than yours though.

fleshmarketclose · 01/12/2018 20:59

Well I'm a mum in my fifties and I like slippers, a book, a dvd of a film I didn't manage to get to see at the cinema, flowers, a magazine subscription, nice handcream, pyjamas/dressing gown in fact I'm really happy with whatever the dc buy me because it comes with love.

PonderLand · 01/12/2018 21:01

£25 Waterstones voucher and some body creams or similar. I've tried the expensive presents with her like bags, shoes, scarfs etc and she's never happy with the gifts so I'm going for cheap this year.

WinkyisbackontheButterBeer · 01/12/2018 21:06

fleshmarketclose you sound lovely and that is exactly what my mum would say. She has told me not to waste money on her but it’s absolutely not a waste. She is wonderful and don’t know what I would do without her. no I’m not tearing up. Not at all. Not even a little bit.

Thank you for the ideas so far. I am just struggling as nothing seems quite right.

L local theatre tickets for Oliver, worth a look Smile

whenwillthetwitchstrike · 01/12/2018 23:38

Does she like afternoon tea? If so, check Groupon to see if there are any deals on there local to you. Your mum can either take a relative/friend or you. I've realised my mum likes a present which involves spending time with me.

SarfE4sticated · 01/12/2018 23:42

There are some really nice things on the national trust online shop - vases, rugs, tea light holders. I'm getting my mum Jamie's Italian this year, and a pair of earrings.

Mrspear · 01/12/2018 23:50

Same budget here - no shame as it is thought that counts! I got her a travel planner from busy b - she is going on a cruise next year. I also got her a paperback - she is collecting a particular reprint of Agatha Christie. They will be wrapped individually- one from us and the other from the boys.

FlyingMonkeys · 02/12/2018 00:11

Mine has asked for some new scatter cushions for the sofa. I'll get a few bits to accompany.

FlyingMonkeys · 02/12/2018 00:12

Does she use a certain face cream or need a new lipstick.

Atleastihavethecat · 02/12/2018 00:14

Christmas mugs from Debenhams that she wanted. She got them early though as she wants to show them off.

KC225 · 02/12/2018 00:18

A memory book. Get a photo album, one with pages not plastic pockets. Flying Tiger have good cheap ones. Go through your old photos, pick out some photographs that mean something to you and her (you may have to ask around). Put a copy of the photograph on one side, and on the page opposite handwrite about the memory of it, how much she means to you, how much she made you laugh that day, smile, how supportive she was that day, what a great granny she was that day etc.

SarfE4sticated · 02/12/2018 00:21

To be honest, although my DD is only 11, I'm know that when she's 31 anything that she buys me will be treasured.
Christmas is about love really, spending time with loved ones. My family pretty much buy anything they want themselves (within reason), so our presents are just thougthful tokens price £20/£30 tops. There is no way I would want anyone to get into debt to buy me a present

BubonicBudgie · 02/12/2018 00:23

Do you have DC's ? I loved the calendar with my GCs on and they are not expensive
