Amazon delivered Lego set unwrapped. Son saw it!

Disaster! I am not having much luck with my Christmas shopping this year. I have ordered LEGO 75930 Jurassic World Indoraptor Rampage at Lockwood Estate from Amazon as a Christmas present for my son. It costs £99.99, so a pretty expensive item. It arrived today in its original packaging (no other packaging used), with the address label stuck on the original box. Also, the box arrived damaged and it was only secured with a Sellotape. But most of all, my son saw it being delivered!!! As the item arrived unwrapped and the delivery man made no attempt to hide it in some way, in fact he knock on the window of the room where my son played and showed the package to him!
I am devastated. My son still believes in Father Christmas and I will now have to buy another present. Thanks to Amazon I am now £99.99 out of pocket. I have sent a complaint to Amazon, lets see what they say. How would you deal with this?

I would like to warn other mums. If you want to keep your Lego a secret from your children, do not buy it from Amazon!

Amazon are damned if they do and damned if they don't.
As the photo a pp has posted shows, the new policy is hardly written in small print!

That’s pretty appalling - I’d be very tempted to send it back. I’ve got to say that I’ve bought a lot of Lego from Amazon and this has never happened to me - was it from one of the marketplace sellers rather than Amazon themselves?

IStandWithPosie · 30/11/2018 21:11

They do tell you when you order it that it won’t be concealed.

NinjaGoSaysNo · 30/11/2018 21:14

Same thing happened to me this week with a Trunki!

NinjaGoSaysNo · 30/11/2018 21:16

(Though the Trunki was from IWOOT.com, not amazon)

GoodnightMooncup · 30/11/2018 21:17

They have started doing this recently. When you use a pc the message is quite obvious, but when I've bought things from the mobile site I haven't noticed it so it must be quite easy to miss. I get everything delivered to the amazon locker and pick them up when I don't have any children with me.

MrsMiggel · 30/11/2018 21:18

Amazon sent me a hardback book in a normal plastic bag recently. Unsurprisingly all the corners were smashed! The replacement came in the usual protective cardboard. Very puzzling!

KonaMum · 30/11/2018 21:20

God I wish they would deliver things to me unwrapped! Around the time DS was born our recycling bin was overflowing with unnecessary Amazon boxes! Today I got a baby toothbrush (in its own packaging) and a box of Mam bottles in a box ffs.

IStandWithPosie · 30/11/2018 21:25

I order from amazon mobile app and it definitely and clearly tells you it won’t be concealed when delivered.

nuttynutjob · 30/11/2018 22:16

It's to save some packaging- imagine the waste of cardboard and paper.

Agree with previous poster, I wouldn't deprive your son of the Lego if that's what he wants for Christmas.

HanaCri · 30/11/2018 22:28

Thanks for all your advice and messages. I have double checked the packaging options for this item this afternoon while on the call with customer services - the option was not there for this item. Not sure why? I also welcome that companies started using less packaging, but in this case it was a step too far, don't you think? Also, they use lovely smiley brown boxes in the Amazon TV advert, I wonder what happened to my smiley box?

I'm a postie and this is my pet hate! Last Christmas I delivered loads like this and I told people to complain as I had a few houses where children can clearly see me coming with a huge box that can't be hidden easily plus the box often gets damaged removing the label. Glad to see that they are putting a notice on now and giving the option to cover things. I would just say it's not for a friend at work and then put a note from Santa on the day saying that "mum told me how much you liked the look of this for x child so I thought you might like it too".

Littlebighorn · 30/11/2018 22:41

Look, sometimes Father Christmas just gets so busy, Mum and Dad have to help out, so he sends some stuff he can collect on his round. Ocassionally he makes a mistake, and the things he had made for Fred, get delivered to Ed, but when he realises he just organises it so Mum and Dad can help out again. But if Ed sees it and likes it, he’ll try and do a swap, or just get another for Fred, so Ed’s also not disappointed.
He’s not getting any younger, and logistics are hard at the best of times.
Give the old guy a break. [santa]

fringegrin45 · 30/11/2018 22:45

Sometimes Santa doesn't stock all the very rare toys in Lapland so he has an account at amazon just in case...

NotAnotherUserName5 · 30/11/2018 22:48

It annoys me. I was aware amazon were cutting down packaging, so I made sure I ticked the it’s a gift option, so it’d come in packaging...but it still didn’t! Thank goodness my courier is as discreet.

Yanbu amazon have gone from one extreme to another with packaging.

RumAppleGinger · 30/11/2018 22:58

Same thing happened to me tonight with laser nerf guns. Thankfully it was dark and the delivery guy was quick thinking enough to hide it when DS appeared at the door. It wouldn't annoy me so much if earlier in the day I hadn't received a small pack of chalk pens in enough packing to half fill my recycling bin.

MrsDeaconClaybourne · 30/11/2018 22:59

This happened to me once with a present for DH even though I'd ticked the box some PPs have shown. Obviously just mildly disappointing for an adult but still. When I complained they sent me a replacement and I had to send one back Hmm Still send lots of mundane stuff excessive packaging so don't understand what the point is.

Butterflycookie · 01/12/2018 18:50

Well was the product dispatched and sold by amazon? It will always say on the web page of the item. If it didn’t come in a box I’d assume that it wasn’t dispatched and sold by amazon but another company selling through amazon. I doubt it’s even Amazon’s fault

TheBigBangRocks · 01/12/2018 19:46

It's hardly the end of the world. Old enough to do a lego set like that likely means they don't believe in Santa anyway.

Amazon deliver many things in the original packaging, I like it as it's far less waste. There is usually a warning to say that's how the item will arrive so you can add a conceal element or have delivered elsewhere.

debbiewest0 · 01/12/2018 20:49

Actually there are many Lego sets on Amazon that do not state “this comes unwrapped” as everyone keeps telling OP. I check this every time I order a parcel if it’s a secret gift and yet my Harry Potter Christmas gift Lego came without a box and of course all the stickers peeled off the box pictures making it look nasty if it’s a gift. They don’t always warn you so I think OP is right to be upset as I was- if I want something delivered secretly I expect it to warn me.

And actually a child may still believe in Santa or just you know, want a surprise Christmas gift, and be good at building big Lego sets! Why should OP have her surprise compromised.
They do not warn every time which I think is wrong....

debbiewest0 · 01/12/2018 20:52

And I think lots of 8 year olds which is suggested age of set still believe-

It is only 87.99 on amazon now perhaps they will give you price difference back OP?

flissfloss65 · 01/12/2018 20:58

I’d also be annoyed with the stickers being on the box. They’re often impossible to remove and leave a glue residue.

Ontheboardwalk · 01/12/2018 20:59

How do you ge the stickers off the box without ruining it? That would annoy me

Cachailleacha · 01/12/2018 21:03

I think it's great that they are reducing packaging, though there should be an option to pay for packaging at checkout. Just give it from you and buy a small second present from Santa.
