8 year old loves science and wants to be a scientist when he’s older so I want to do a science box for Christmas. So far got a microscope and slime making bits....now I’m drawing a blank!

What would you put in a science hamper? Ideas please!!

I’m doing something similar but using a Galt science kit as a starting point.

TheWoollybacksWife · 28/11/2018 21:12

Lab coat - I loved mine 🤓
Safety glasses
Test tubes
Magnifying glass

WinkyisbackontheButterBeer · 28/11/2018 21:13

Magnetic toys
Things to make circuits or robots
Crystal growing kit
Book of kids science experiments?

ipswichwitch · 28/11/2018 21:17

How about one of these

I loved my chemistry set when I was a kid, and I’m almost tempted to get one for DS1 —myself—

HopeGarden · 28/11/2018 21:18

Book of science experiments you can do at home?

And maybe a bit obvious but there’s loads of different boxes science kit toys out there, like glow labs, crystal growing, chemistry, circuit boards, insect habitats, magnetic lab, gross science, etc etc, depending on his interests.

Bicarb of soda and vinegar for DIY volcanos, if you dont mind mess.

Thames and Kosmos do some good science kits

whiteroseredrose · 28/11/2018 21:45

The electricity kits that have motors and bells etc. Use press studs to connect. Will see if I can see one. My DC loved theirs.

Curious2468 · 28/11/2018 21:46

Ohh so many options!

Fossils and gems
Mini microscope (natural history museum one on amazon is good)
Ph test strips
Test tubes
Pipettes
Magnets
Magnetic slime

This site is great for little bits:

Cambridge Brainbox primary electricity kit. Can't attach sorry, but about £23 on Amazon.

Magazine called Whizz Pop Bang. You can buy single issues, back issues in sets of 3 or more, or a subscription to it every month. Has articles, puzzles, ideas for experiments, Q&A, etc. Ideal for 7-11 year olds

Doing the same for dd. Hers has - lab coats, safety goggles, magnifying glass, microscope, clip board and blank stickers, slime and water science kits plus the galt science kit, bought a load of petri dishes and agar from eBay to add too. Think I bought a book of some sort to go in but I can't remember which one!

whiteroseredrose · 28/11/2018 21:57

Not science as such but mine loved Spy Kit stuff at the same age. Glasses that help you see behind you, mini bugs etc.

Willow1992 · 28/11/2018 22:06

Fossils, bugs in amber, lemon clock, a little DIY robot kit?

Willow1992 · 28/11/2018 22:08

Oh, and I just remembered periodic table Top Trumps!

Fresh01 · 28/11/2018 22:35

The John Adams Hot Wires set is very good.

Also agree on the Whizz Pop Bang subscription. My DS loves it.

CountFosco · 28/11/2018 22:41

Last year DD got a Chemistry set, labcoat, labbooks, and 'science is cool' pin badge.

The Science Museum has a good shop with lots of ideas.

BonnesVacances · 28/11/2018 22:44

Defo safety goggles to get him into good habits early on!

Stompythedinosaur · 28/11/2018 23:55

This microscope is excellent.

What about a star globe, a weather station or a strong magnet? My dc enjoyed a kit to make your own compass with a magnet in a dish of water, I think it came from eBay.

The sphere rainbow linked to earlier in the post - ds had one from Mothercare several years ago and it cost maybe a fiver - was really robust too. Even though all his other baby toys have long been put away (he's at secondary school!) that is still out and about, and everybody who walks past it can't resist picking it up and having a few goes with it!
