Board game for DH that kids can play too?

Juliecloud · 27/11/2018 21:47

Can anyone suggest a new board/card game that I can get my DH for Christmas? I would like one that we could play together as a couple, but also that the kids could join in with now and again. The kids are all at primary school.

Games we have and like are
Catan
Ticket to ride
Carcassonne
Scrabble
Forbidden island
Dobble
Sleeping queens
Uno
Enchanted forest

Azul? If your DC can play settlers or Carcassone they should be able to play that, and it works well for 2 players too.

Splendor or king of Tokyo are good

milienhaus · 27/11/2018 21:55

I second splendour!

Santorini

We like Bohnanza, Gubs, and Colt Express. We have pretty much every game on your list there!

Kindomino is great for kids! Me and my DP played it for nearly 2 hours the other day, good fun!

Angeladelight · 27/11/2018 22:00

Sorry typo, Kingdomino!

I have a 6yo who is just getting into King of Tokyo (imaging Godzilla-flavoured yahtzee)

Other games where he can just about hold his own include: Hive, Port Royal, No Thanks, Age of War and Sushi Go

Camel Up is fun, in a silly sort of way, and Celestia (steampunky airship travelling who-can-hold-their-nerve) is a great little game too. Both would be OK from age 7 or 8, I would say.

imagine Godzilla-flavoured yahtzee...

The London Board Game is a hot in our house

DaphneCanDoBetterThanFred · 27/11/2018 22:13

Survive - Escape from Atlantis! is a big hit in our house. Vaguely similar to forbidden island in that you’re trying to rescue your pieces from a shrinking island but not remotely cooperative Grin and plenty of sharks, whales, whirlpools and volcanoes to keep the kids interested. Youngest is 7 and picked it up fine.

Tsuro looks simple but gets more intense the longer it goes on. You lay tiles with paths on and try to stay on the board without the paths leading you off the edge. Great at the end when you can lay a tile that shunts a family member off the board.

Cluedo is a favourite too Smile

Wow, thanks, lots of suggestions here that I’ve not heard of. I’ll look into them.

Love Letter is a fun little game that I reckon primacy age children could enjoy.
Had a lot of fun playing King of Tokyo with an eleven year old and some grown ups recently.
Also played Machi Koro with a child around that age and she seemed to enjoy it. It's a fun game but I don't love it as a two player.
Small World might be fun- lots of mythical creatures and fighting.

Butterymuffin · 28/11/2018 00:19

Scotland Yard?

okeydokeygirl · 28/11/2018 00:32

Othello. 2 person strategy game. Super easy to learn to play.

okeydokeygirl · 28/11/2018 00:34

Challenj. Fun game for all the family that can be very silly. Also great for a bunch of grown ups who have had a drink or three.

tessieandoz · 28/11/2018 09:35

okeydokeygirl
Is that spelled correctly? I am looking for a good recommended board game for Christmas but if I Google " Challenj " I get nothing. Thank you

TheBitterBoy · 29/11/2018 19:39

@tessieandoz try chalenj! - its a weird spelling including the exclamation mark.

tessieandoz · 30/11/2018 02:16

OMG Thank you . That worked x

We regularly play King of Tokyo, Camel Up, Kingdomino, Love Letters, Sleeping Queens and Dobble with us two and a 7 and 9 year old.

Others we love are Jaipur (looks boring, but plays well) which we play in teams of 2 if the kids are joining in. Sushi Go is awesome.

Our buys for this year are Super Rhino Battle (which looks great fun for both kids and adults. It's a stacking game, like a more grown up version of Animal upon Animal) and Happy Salmon (a fun, 3 minute party game).

nellodee · 30/11/2018 07:28

Oh and I'm thinking about getting "My Little Scythe" or "Jamaica". Anyone got any experience of those two?

WhirlwindHugs · 30/11/2018 07:29

Tokonoko (panda/bamboo/tile game) very popular in our house.
