I'm looking for some really good gin for DF, he's liked gin since way before it was trendy so doesn't need to be any fancy flavours. I know nothing about this stuff! I did see a website mentioned on a gift thread and screenshot it but can't find it anywhere
Thanks Gin

Depending on where in the country you are. Many Gin distilleries do tours where you get taken around the distillery So that might be a nice present (unsure what your looking to spend)

Personally I would go with something like

Haymans (been on their tour and a big fan)
Silent Pool (this is a rather delicious gin IMO)
Considering you saying he has liked it for a long time.

Oh there is also a gin festival

LesAnya · 18/11/2018 23:48

Ooo gunpowder is also v good

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 19/11/2018 07:03

Harris gin. Lovely gin and also comes in a nice bottle and can only be ordered direct from the distillery which makes it a great present.

ClosedAuraOpenMind · 19/11/2018 13:22

another one saying Harris Gin, the bottle is v pretty, I'm planning to put some wee lights in it when the gin is all gone

would also really recommend Lussa gin, which is another one you'd probably have to buy from the distillery (deposing where you are) it's v different and delicate flavoured

Hunters Cheshire gin.

Sorry they should be www.huntersgin.com

I'd have a look for a local gin. We have a few decent small distilleries local to us in Devon and their gin is delicious and made traditionally in small batches.

Otherwise I recommended the botanist.

Newmum102 · 19/11/2018 18:40

Gin Mare, Eden Mill Love Gin or the Botanist are my current favourites

BIWI · 19/11/2018 18:45

What does he currently drink? That might give you a clue. I agree to avoid the flavoured ones - and especially pink gins (unless the pink comes specifically from real fruit).

If he's been drinking gin for a while, he's probably a more classic drinker, in which case you're looking at something like Tanqueray, Martin Millar, Plymouth Gin, Portobello Road (just off the top of my head).

It also depends on your budget!

I live in Brighton, and there's a local gin called--Brighton Gin! It's got seaweed amongst the botanicals. I bought my SIL a taster bottle last year, and she enjoyed it so much I've bought her a full size bottle this year.

Nakedavenger74 · 20/11/2018 09:42

Don't go for flavoured gins. For a classic gin drinker it's a bit like getting a bottle of peach Lambrini for a wine connoisseur.
I'd go for a classic gin with some interesting botanicals.
Silent Pool
Good old Hendricks
Tanquaray Ten
Ophir for some spice and great for Xmas
Durham Gin
The Botantist

If you can stretch then get two or three bottles for some 'taste testing'. SP, Hendricks and Ophir will bring a range of really obvious differences!

Liverpool gin ticks the boxes for our family traditional gin drinkers.

My current favourites are sipsmiths, copper house and a home made one from a kit bought on amazon.

I drank gin long before it became fashionable and while I like a few of the flavoured ones I can’t wrap my head round pink gin being fruit flavoured. Pink gin was DFs favourite drink and it was made with angostura butters back then Grin

livingthegoodlife · 20/11/2018 10:59

I recommend 6 o'clock gin - it's made in Bristol and comes in a beautiful blue bottle with a glass stopper. Tastes fantastic and is a straightforward gin, no gimmicky flavours.

Darnley · 20/11/2018 11:27

As a gin drinker myself, I am not a fan of the flavoured stuff. However, someone recently recommended whitely Neil quince gin. OMG. ITS LOVELY. Got it in Morrisons.

iloveredwine · 20/11/2018 11:45

Silentpool gin is lovely and has a gorgeous bottle. you can get glasses to match it.

BIWI · 20/11/2018 12:25

Whatever you do, don't buy Gordons pink gin. It's truly vile if you like gin!

Warner Edwards is a rhubarb gin, one of the first widely available, and that is lovely.

BIWI · 20/11/2018 12:27

Alternatively, you could do what DH is doing, and make your own flavoured gin - maybe you could make your DF a few smaller bottles to try?

DH uses Sainsbury's London Dry gin (their mid-tier own label), chops up a packet of rhubarb - if you can find rhubarb now! - and pours the gin over the rhubarb in a big jug. Leaves to marinate for 3-4 days, stirring occasionally, then filters it back into the bottle. Absolutely gorgeous.

He did the same thing recently with a couple of punnets of raspberries too. Nothing else added - and certainly no sugar!

WTFIsAGleepglorp · 20/11/2018 12:32

Aldi are doing a well reviewed Gingerbread Gin Liqueur for £9.99

BIWI · 20/11/2018 12:46

I can confirm that Aldi's standard gin (in a green bottle, for around £14 a litre) is very good. But I'd draw the line at giving that as a gift, no matter how nice it is. (Unless your |DF is an Aldi fan)

MsSquiz · 20/11/2018 12:49

MrSquiz is a gin drinker and his favourite is Isle of Harris Gin. It comes in a gorgeous bottle and can only be ordered from the aisle of Harris direct.

I've bought him another bottle as part of his Christmas present and ordered the sugar kelp water that they recommend with it.

Another vote for Harris Gin here. I know a few people who are really in to their Gin and know their stuff - they rave about this stuff. Plus the bottle is lovely and I believe you can only buy it from the manufacturer so it's more likely it'll be one they haven't tried before.

Cornflakedout · 20/11/2018 13:55

Another vote for silent pool: really smooth and distilled by done if the loveliest gin soaked Grin guys you could meet

Cornflakedout · 20/11/2018 13:55

*some of [eye roll]

dementedma · 21/11/2018 22:11

i'm flying to the islands on Monday and will be driving down to Harris to buy some gin. it is absolutley gorgeous with a slice of pink grapefruit.
should I take orders??

BlancheM · 21/11/2018 22:26

Ma you might find yourself inundated with requests!
So many lovely suggestions, thanks again. I think I've now got birthdays and other special occasions covered now as well.
I had a look at the Harris site and it is indeed the one I first had in mind but then forgot, so I will go with that I think. The glassware is beautiful
