I'm looking for some really good gin for DF, he's liked gin since way before it was trendy so doesn't need to be any fancy flavours. I know nothing about this stuff! I did see a website mentioned on a gift thread and screenshot it but can't find it anywhere
Thanks Gin

My DFs favourite is Plymouth. He calls it a proper gin unlike the new fad or flavoured ones.
If you wanted something Christmas related then have a look at Pickerings Christmas Gin baubles.
Another thought is most supermarkets do a nice set with 4 miniatures and 4 bottles of fever tree tonic which I like. Nice way to try different ones. You could possibly do something like that yourself too.
Look somewhere like 31dover for reviews too.

I'm a fairly traditional gin drinker. I'd definitely steer clear of the rhubarb etc ones.

I've bought One gin for my DM. Some profits go to clean water and sanitation projects overseas.

Edinburgh gin v good. Tanquary and Bombay fairly safe bets.

Lazybonita · 18/11/2018 20:11

Try NB gin, it’s fab. It has won loads of awards and tastes great.

IrregularCommentary · 18/11/2018 20:33

Burleighs. It's so smooth and so lovely I can happily drink it neat (though I generally don't!)

LesAnya · 18/11/2018 21:32

Harris gin is a good one, as is Orogin

zucchinieggplant · 18/11/2018 21:41

Tarquins is our favourite and they do some special flavours if you did want something a bit different. I also like Salcombe Gin.

snowball98 · 18/11/2018 21:44

My favourites are Cotswold gin and darnleys view spiced. The spice is nutmeg and it's got a lovely warm feeling drinking it.

ja9r · 18/11/2018 21:45

At a gin festival in Scotland recently i sampled many... and thought lussa gin stood out as something really special. Distilled on the Isla of Jura.

As far as a Christmassy gin goes... again have sampled many and would heartily recommend Misty Isle Mulled Christmas Gin as the only gin that was actually Christmassy.

raindancemumma · 18/11/2018 21:49

Definitely the Cotswolds gin. It is divine!

Garden Swift Gin (previously Garden Tiger). I went to a gin tasting masterclass with them, very small local distillery, lovely people and highly knowledgeable. They really had a passion for the product which was lovely, and the gin was amazing!

I also like Cotswolds gin (subtle lavender scent) and Silent Pool (citrus undertones).

MrsChollySawcutt · 18/11/2018 21:50

I have this one on DHs Xmas list, He likes subtle, botanical flavours to his gin like Hendrick's and this is supposed to be a really good one. It won international gin of the year in 2017:

Tarquin's Cornish The SeaDog Navy Gin

DragonMamma · 18/11/2018 21:51

Monkey 47 or Jinzu (made with Sake) for something a bit different.

I don’t think you can go wrong with Tanqueray 10 ever though 👍🏻

jocktamsonsbairn · 18/11/2018 21:51

I know it's not fancy but I really love Hendricks! Have sampled so many but that is still my favourite!! I also really enjoy Arran gin but not sure if you can buy it off the island - it's amazing with tonic and a slice of orange. Might need to contact the distillery direct.
I'm not sure that a real gin drinker would like all the flavoured ones but if he does I recommend the boe gin Scottish bramble. It's delicious. I also
like Edinburgh gin raspberry liquor, but Hendricks is def the best proper gin IMO! I also like Martin Miller but wasn't keen on the botanist.

OnMyWhistle · 18/11/2018 21:51

My favourite is Twisting Spirits Douglas Fir gin www.twistingspirits.co.uk/index.php/our-gins

ShellieEllie · 18/11/2018 21:51

Plymouth Gin

ScrambledSmegs · 18/11/2018 21:58

My personal favourite is always Martin Millers (it's so smooth) but there are some other great ones too.

Tanqueray 10 obviously. It's got one of the higher ABV percentages of the mainstream market gins, so great in martinis too.

Silent Pool is lovely although pricey. Nice bottle so makes a great present.

Williams Chase make their own base spirit as well as distilling, which is something most other gin makers don't bother doing (they buy it in). They do a dry (40%) and an 'Elegant' (48%) but quite frankly their flavoured gins are the thing I like best. The pink grapefruit one is unbelievably delicious, my FIL drinks it like there's no tomorrow.

TheNumberfaker · 18/11/2018 21:59

As others have said, Monkey 47 or Tanqueray 10

BlancheM · 18/11/2018 22:12

Thank you all, I've got about a dozen tabs open looking at all this gin!

dementedma · 18/11/2018 22:18

Has to be Isle of Harris first.
jawbox gin from Belfast is also very nice

IHeartKingThistle · 18/11/2018 22:29

Our favourite is Gunpowder gin.

PippilottaLongstocking · 18/11/2018 22:31

I like sipsmiths or there’s one called siblings gin which is distilled in Cheltenham and is lovely, not sure where outside Cheltenham you can buy it though

Brokenribses · 18/11/2018 22:34

I recommended Gunpowder before but I called it Gunsmoke. I always make that mistake for some reason!

FanSpamTastic · 18/11/2018 22:37

If you fancy a gin based experience - then how about make your own gin at the ginstitute?

SimplyPut · 18/11/2018 22:40

Caorunn, Wild Islsnd sacred tree or a good old Hendricks are all nice gifts. I too loved gin long before it was trendy and find these to be some of the more traditional yet treat bottles.

longtompot · 18/11/2018 22:41

Bought this at Winchester Christmas market last year. Tried it neat and it was SO amazing, and I don't drink gin neat, we bought a bottle. I really want to get some more, but its a bit out of our budget this year. Still have a shot left which I am saving.
