What colour tree decorations?

I've decided I might like to change my tree decorations this year.
I usually go for red and white and have spent quite a bit of money on baubles over the years, but I've seen some beautiful aqua coloured ones and it's made me want to now have those along with white.

So what colours are your trees and do you think I should change?

I keep all my baubles, I don't have many anyway and have the woodland animals theme each year, they are too expensive to not use again and again so are very carefully bubble wrapped and stored each year in the attic, the collection is quite big now, I will most likely get another animal when they go into JL sale.

Lovemusic33 · 17/11/2018 09:31

We buy a random baulble each year to add to our random collection, we don’t hang them from the tree though, we tie them to ribbon and hang them in the window (we have lots of windows) and then the tree stays themed, though this year I might have a tree of random baubles as we not have quite a few. We are going to buy a new one today.

Mochachinomumma · 17/11/2018 09:45

Need2morehands My dcs would love that, they have a small tree in their room that looks like an elf has vomited on it Grin tinsel multicoloured lights the whole 9 yards.

Yeah I have a big tree, the kids have one too which looks like the whole of Christmas has been thrown at it!!

I try and stick to gold and something, and we buy a new ornament or two each year.

Until this year, when I've gone a bit mad.

My excitement is that I've had three years of crap Christmas times and I just want a lovely one this year. With no drama. No family crises. No deaths (kid you not) and just fun and relaxation.....in a pretty house 🙈

twointhemorning · 17/11/2018 13:44

My tree theme is silver and gold. Last year I got some dark brown copper baubles as it was a bit monotone. This year I've bought spent a fortune on glass baubles from John Lewis' Amber theme in browns and oranges to add to the others. I hope it will work.

I like the idea of having different sets of baubles to allow for different theme colours. I'm not sure we have enough space in the loft though.

MissMarplesKnitting · 17/11/2018 14:16

I partly want to try the "Christmas vomited on my tree" look I remember as a kid. Multi colour lights, different tinsels and basically script of colour and nostalgia in the firm of well loved decorations from years gone by.

But then I think about the cost and stick with my gold and something else ...

BeauticianNotMagician81 · 17/11/2018 16:05

Our lounge is red and grey so I stick with red and silver. I've just sold all our decorations as we are having a new tree this year. I've no idea what to get.

JosephineHass · 17/11/2018 20:24

I so want to do sort of neutral rustic farmhouse style Christmas tree, which is basically whites, wooden ornaments and perhaps some burlap ribbons.
However we have tons of red ornaments from previous years and bought multi coloured fairy lights yesterday( on dh special wish) so I don't know how it end actually up...Probably something between rustic and mishmash ornaments.🤨

MarklahMarklah · 17/11/2018 21:27

Beautician you could go with grey, cream/white and perhaps a little green?

Josephine red would be good with the neutral stuff but not sure the coloured lights will show it all of if you do that. You could ditch the red and do neutral/burlap/wood/white with coloured lights?

Can you tell I get overly invested in all this stuff? Smile

starlight45 · 17/11/2018 21:33

All the colours, all the tinsel, all glitter, feathers, multicoloured lights, too many baubles all different sizes. I grew up in the 70s and it shows with my decorations.

wentmadinthecountry · 17/11/2018 23:23

Gold/glass/wooden/natural/crystal/the right shade of white. White lights (2000 on a string from White Company). If we decide it looks undressed, red stuff will appear in small measure to add depth. I'm sure to many it sounds boring, but the tree is definitely overloaded, just with stuff I can live with for a few weeks!

wentmadinthecountry · 17/11/2018 23:23

Oh, and definitely no tinsel.

Mochachinomumma · 18/11/2018 16:46

It's up Grin I need a few more coloured baubles and a star/angel also another set of lights as I seem to have lost some.

I plan on doing the rest of the house tomorrow when the dcs are at school.

Marklah thank you. Great idea.

Wow Mocha tree looks fab. Smile

FrazzyAndFrumpled · 18/11/2018 17:35

None of ours match Grin we just buy ones we like, often when we’re out visiting somewhere (Christmas markets etc)

duckling84 · 18/11/2018 17:36

Got new decorations and tree this year so we have got warm white lights, gold baubles and then all our special baubles on it (some Santa's, baby's first Christmas, some handmade colourful ones etc) and I think the overall effect is really pretty

mumonashoestring · 18/11/2018 17:39

Ours is a total mish-mash - some of you would probably hate it Grin but there are fabric baubles I made when DH and I first moved in together and were broke, jingly bell baubles that DS chose when he was tinier, a robin that reminds me of one my grandmother had on her tree (that now belongs to my mum), a little felted yellow dog in a Santa hat that looks like our stupid little mutt, some clay decorations that DS made and painted... We'll probably add something else when the Christmas market opens. Tinsel as well because the smell pretty much makes Christmas for me.

I remember years ago walking down one of the posher roads in Bedford where the houses all had big double bay fronts. I don't know if the residents had coordinated it in some way but every single house had a 7' tree with white lights and gold and silver decorations. Except one - one house in the middle had a light-up tree with decorations in every colour, purple tinsel and a 'Santa please stop here' sign in the garden. I've often wondered if the other residents let them survive that Christmas [santa]

Seafour · 18/11/2018 19:57

I've found my tribe, big house so lots of areas to decorate, big galleried landing where we have an artificial tree and a santa's grotto(big den) populated by cuddly toys of a Christmas ilk, build a bear Santa bear, reindeer on roller skates, penguins etc, tree covered in home made and plastic tat, accumulated over four decades, nine children and now eight grandchildren.
Main lounge, real tree traditional red green and gold.
Kitchen diner, small pale green tree covered in pale blue, Scandinavian and hand sewn decorations.
My favourite is in our garden room where we can put up a nine foot tree which is festooned with, glass, white, iridescent pale green, pink and glass icicles many of which belonged to my grandmother.

It takes almost a week to put all the decorations up and I absolutely love it, this year however I am having major spinal surgery on 6/12 and it's highly unlikely that I won't be home for Christmas.

Mrspig86 · 18/11/2018 20:09

This was ours last year. Certainly no theme going on! Smile

Mochachinomumma · 18/11/2018 20:11

Oh seafour sorry to hear you may not be home for Christmas, that would break my heart.
Could you not put the decorations up a little bit earlier and have a pre Christmas dinner?

I would love to have a big house that I could turn into a huge grotto.
I absoulty love Christmas, my ex used to say from nov-jan was when he loved me most because I was always happy Hmm

That's lovely Mrspig.

jerkkneed · 18/11/2018 20:23

I used to have bright jewel colours and bit of a mismatch and I swapped it last year to coppers, rose golds and metallics.

We also got rid of our fake tree as it was very tatty and decided on a real tree from a wood farm near us.

It was the best tree we ever had! Kirsty Allsop asks for pics of Christmas trees on her Twitter each year and retweets her favs and last year she retweeted our tree! I was so proud! 😆

Ooplesandbanoonoos · 18/11/2018 20:55

Its lovely @Mrspig86

Ooplesandbanoonoos · 18/11/2018 20:56

It sounds fabulous @seafour. Could the family have it done for when you do come home?

Seafour · 19/11/2018 10:29

We are doing a modest version this year, big tree is going up this week and DH will put the lounge tree up late so that it still looks nice when I come home.
We've spent the last few weeks visiting all the kids and dgc and we are having Christmas at the end of January.
