"Hosting" Breakfast on Christmas Morning (for my parents)

EyUpOurKid · 11/11/2018 08:19

We've just moved house! It's been a long time coming and in thrilled generally at the moment.

My parents are now around the corner and for Christmas we always go to them for the day, but I want to set DS presents up at ours so he can open them here (he's only 2 but we've done it at my DPs house every year previously.)

They'll come round to watch DS open his pressies in the morning, so I'll say to come for breakfast. What can I do? I'm thinking bucks fizz and bacon butties, some pre-homemade cinnamon rolls? I could do waffles instead?? We have Christmas dinner at teatime these days so having a filling brekkie/brunch isn't a massive issue

DM is the vicar so will have to nip off and celebrate the birth of Christ with her flock at some point. I'm just very excited!

How gorgeous. You sound so happy and excited.
I'd do a bit of a buffet. Trad smoked salmon and scrambled eggs made with a bit of cream and chives or smoked salmon and cream cheese bagels. Cinnamon rolls, croissants and pain au raisin/chocolate would be good. Bacon butties too. A few of those things sweet and savoury.

I wouldn;t do pancakes or home made waffles or anything that needs toasting individually as you'll want to sit down together, so go for things that can be warmed up in the oven en masse.

Big cafetieres of coffee, pots of tea and hot choc, bucks fizz and fresh OJ in case the vicar would prefer to be sober. Maybe a fruit salad or plate of berries and melon slices or a big bowl of bircher muesli made the night before, in case some people prefer a light breakfast.

SimplyPut · 11/11/2018 08:29

If there are only four adults a buffet seems a lot of food. I would just do bagels with cream cheese and smoked salmon with a glass of cranberry and clementine fizz. Super easy!

Meet0nTheIedge · 11/11/2018 08:31

We do cinnamon buns, made the night before and put somewhere cool for a slow overnight rise then into the oven in the morning, croissants, bacon sandwiches and plenty of juice/coffee. Cereal or toast for anyone who prefers it.

EyUpOurKid · 11/11/2018 08:39

Good point about individually toastiny things like pancakes, I'd be in the kitchen and missing the fun! Fruit salad is an excellent shout.

Yes to teapots and cafetieres! And lovely carafe of fresh orange juice!

I did wonder about cream cheese and smoked salmon bagels but I don't think my Dad would eat them, I shall ask him, if he pulls a face I'll know Grin The vicar woukd be all over that though!

How do I concoct this cranberry and Clementine fizz?! That sounds amazing! I want one immediately!

(Any food left over would be eaten eventually by DH, he's the sort of bloke who eats a whole chicken as a meal with salad and rice, wastage isn't a massive problem in our house, but I'll definitely not overface people.

Thank you both!

Meet0nTheIedge Have you got a recipe for cinnamon buns? I'll need to practice a few times prior Grin

What a lovely idea!

Unless you are having it later, what about gammon and eggs. Roast it Christmas Eve (i always do this) so it can be sliced and eaten for breakfast. I have mine for Boxing Day with leftovers so I don't have to cook.
I do like the smoked salmon and cream cheese bagel idea but alas can't have them. M&S croissants? bit messy though. Bacon or sausage butties. You don't want to be cooking for long because you might miss some fun. Tell the vicar we made them for the altar servers and choir one year. Cooked at home, heated in oven in foil ready after service.

SimplyPut · 11/11/2018 08:56

I use this recipe but apparently M&S sell it pre bottled too!

Smoked salmon and cream cheese bagels fizz and some fancy fruit salad on the side?

Meet0nTheIedge · 11/11/2018 08:58

The recipe I use is this one. We sometimes do the vegan version (for a family member with a cow's milk allergy), sometimes use cow's milk and butter if its just us.

I assemble them in a pyrex lasagne dish the night before, cover in cling film and put somewhere cool (garage) also make water icing and pop it in a disposable icing bag with a bag clip to seal. Then pop them in the oven in the morning, snip the end off the piping bag and drizzle them while warm, then eat. They don't keep well, but that's not normally a problem. Substituting cinnamon for mincemeat makes a lovely alternative too.

dizzydaisies · 11/11/2018 09:01

Nigella also has a recipe for Christmas muffins - they're gorgeous, very light with cinnamon, cranberry and orange. They're really easy to do beforehand, put them in the freezer and then pop them in the oven on Christmas morning to warm through.

We have them every year on Christmas morning as we never want anything huge for breakfast, but they'd work for you if you want something sweet-ish to go with the fizz and bagels.

reluctantbrit · 11/11/2018 09:02

We often get the frozen Croissants and Pain au Chocolate from Waitrose. They. Are beautifully and are lovely even when they are cold so you could eat them later on to last you longer.

We (well DH) bought a tefal pancake 🥞 maker and it's brilliant for breakfast. Just put it on the table, plug it in, and off you go! It does 6 small or 1 large at a time. Everyone's in charge of their own, so no need to be stuck in the kitchen.

I don't suggest going out and buying one especially though. I like the sound of bacon sarnies, cinnamon rolls and bucks fizz.

I also wouldn't do a do a buffet as you'll end up with loads of food leftover, which is already an issue at Christmas.

OneStepMoreFun · 11/11/2018 09:36

Ooh, I might try making those cinnamon buns now there's an easy recipe on offer.

Agree with others that a buffet isn't necessary if there's only four of you. I was imagining all the aunts and uncles too. Well, I was imagining my family who are locusts with loads of 6'4" rugby-playing cousins and nephews milling about among the newborns. Four adults and small children won't need a buffet.

Jellybean100 · 11/11/2018 09:43

We did this last year and hoping it will become a tradition! We did bacon butties and croissants. Was lovely! Enjoy

openupmyeagereyes · 11/11/2018 09:47

I second Nigella’s Christmas morning muffins. I make them every year and they last for several days.

youarenotkiddingme · 11/11/2018 09:54

I'm doing cinnamon and raisin bagels (I'm GF). Bagels are an excellent idea for breakfast as they are filling but not heavy iyswim?

Bacon can be kept warm and put on table.

Sounds lovely and your excitement streams through the page - congratulations

EyUpOurKid · 11/11/2018 10:59

Lots to think about (and be excited for!) I've just realised I can get festive napkins and all sorts!! Thank you everyone!

Our DC make a Kringle on Christmas Eve which proves overnight and we bake on Christmas morning.

It’s divine. Serve with freshly squeezed OJ and proper coffee.

Then we have nibbles and fizz at midday and eat lunch around 3-4pm.

EvaHarknessRose · 11/11/2018 12:06

Thank You OneStepMoreFun you have just got my christmas food list started - I think my lot would now actually love that smoked salmon and scrambled eggs.

NoWordForFluffy · 11/11/2018 12:47

The M&S cranberry and clementine Buck's Fizz is currently reduced from £6 to £4 a bottle. It did go down to half price right before Christmas last year, but I got a couple of bottles on Friday to make sure I had it. It's lovely!

NoWordForFluffy · 11/11/2018 12:48

Oh, and I do Nigella's muffins too. They're bloody gorgeous.

sashh · 11/11/2018 13:15

I'd put a tray of bacon in the oven, 15 mins to cook, 20 if you want really crispy. YOu could do another tray of eggs and a third with mushrooms and tomatoes if you want more hot food.

I'd put a bsket of different breads, including bagels and granery. Then a large plate of cheese (including cream) hams, smoked salmon, melon, cherry tomatoes, grapes.

Serve tea, coffee and fruit juice.

When the bacon is ready put it on a hot plate and let everyone pick what they want.

Meet0nTheIedge · 11/11/2018 13:37

M&S usually do a mulled fruit juice drink which is very nice and much enjoyed by my DCs.

OneStepMoreFun · 13/11/2018 19:55

@EvaHarknessrose - scrambled eggs and smoked salmon is really good if you do brunch and then eat Christmas lunch at abotu 4pm. It stops people being ghrumpy and irritable for food.
