"Hosting" Breakfast on Christmas Morning (for my parents)

We've just moved house! It's been a long time coming and in thrilled generally at the moment.

My parents are now around the corner and for Christmas we always go to them for the day, but I want to set DS presents up at ours so he can open them here (he's only 2 but we've done it at my DPs house every year previously.)

They'll come round to watch DS open his pressies in the morning, so I'll say to come for breakfast. What can I do? I'm thinking bucks fizz and bacon butties, some pre-homemade cinnamon rolls? I could do waffles instead?? We have Christmas dinner at teatime these days so having a filling brekkie/brunch isn't a massive issue

DM is the vicar so will have to nip off and celebrate the birth of Christ with her flock at some point. I'm just very excited!

🎅🎄🎁

Mmmm those Nigella muffins sound so good!

NoWordForFluffy · 13/11/2018 20:30

They really are, @owl89! 😋

We do smoked salmon and scrambled eggs on toast for Christmas breakfast every year, with a glass of Bucks Fizz. It's our tradition - even the dogs get some too! It works really well for filling you up until Christmas dinner without being too heavy and greasy.

Meet0nTheIedge · 13/11/2018 22:06

I find smoked salmon and scrambled egg incredibly heavy and greasy, I like both but never together.

NoWordForFluffy · 13/11/2018 22:14

The one thing I'd never describe as heavy and greasy is smoked salmon and scrambled eggs! I don't even find it overly filling, though I do love it.

Meet0nTheIedge · 13/11/2018 22:27

I literally can't eat them together - I love both but they just don't go together at all IME.

SealSong · 13/11/2018 23:00

I love a tasty Christmas breakfast. Like you OP we eat the dinner late
Last year for brekkie I did - bowl of fresh fruit salad, some pain au chocolats and danish pastries,, smoked salmon and scrambled eggs with crusty bread, or sausage butty, big pot of coffee, and fresh orange juice.

Choccywoccyhooha · 13/11/2018 23:08

I love how excited you are OP, it's brought a smile to my face. It sounds like you'll all have a lovely time.

If you fancy a cinnamon bun -cheat- backup, Ocado do excellent frozen scandi cinnamon twirls (gluten free), 4 for £3. They are quite danish pastry-like. Defrost in room temperature and warm gently in the oven just before serving. Yum!

cheat

I might have to practice making those muffins. I have a new stove and time to buy ingredients today. Might need to practice a few times and invite friend on Saturday morning. Mmmmm!

I made Nigella’s gammon last year.

Heratnumber7 · 14/11/2018 08:41

Eggy bread and bacon would be my breakfast of choice. Will set the vicar up nicely for morning service and keep you all going until dinner time later.
You could have some mulled wine on the go for when the vicar gets home. And some things to pick at during the day.

If you fancy a cinnamon bun -cheat- backup, Ocado do excellent frozen scandi cinnamon twirls (gluten free), 4 for £3. Absolute WIN!! Dsis is intolerant! I didn't know such things existed, I've just always made her GF Welsh cakes and such but that will be so much easier!

I've got a bottle of the M&S cranberry fizz stashed in the Harry Potter under the stairs cupboard kitchen adjacent pantry Grin and I'm going to practice Nigellas muffins this weekend as prep.

Choccy I'm so excited! It's been a really long and tiring year so having some light and fun to look forward to is both a relief and a thrill Grin

Thank you everyone! Six weeks till Christmas!! 🎅🎁🎄💫🍊

M&S also have frozen pain au chocolats, pain au raisin and croissants, all ready to cook from the bag. Or Jus Rol do versions of all 3 in rolls, which also work out very easy to put together in the morning. (I'd love to make cinnamon rolls, I never get the chance to try them and as we are only 3, it might be a waste).

Big pot of coffee, big pot of tea, large jug of orange juice (freshly squeezed or M&S), another of grapefruit if you have anyone who drinks it.

Fruit salad is great as it can be made ahead, and can be eaten over a couple of days. (Or even as dessert for dinner).

And something savoury - a fry done in the oven works well, or a large bowl of scrambled eggs with a plate of bacon, diced tomato, grated cheese, smoked salmon slices etc for people to choose their own "additions". Maybe over sourdough toast or toasted bagels for some carb if needed.

PizzaPlanet · 14/11/2018 22:31

We do the cinnamon rolls that come in a tube like a Swiss roll which you slice up and heat in the oven. We have a few strawberries with it and that’s plenty enough otherwise we get too full for lunch.

florriepeck · 15/11/2018 10:47

On a less sophisticated note, Asda Christmas tree crumpets!
They often sell out quickly, so it's handy to buy them when you see them, and put them in the freezer, so you can lift out Chrismas Eve.
