Present for lawyer DP

My DP is a barrister. He’s quite well off, and can pretty much buy what he wants. He loves reading & is a bit of a geek. He loves history - including the history of law.

Any ideas? His birthday is also just after Christmas so I actually need 2 presents in quick succession.

Tickets to something he will enjoy? Theatre, sports event, music event, opera etc.

A night in a luxurious hotel with a spa etc or in and area you can go for a walk.

A nice new pen (Mont Blanc) or similar.

Really hard to suggest without knowing his interests outside of work.

mrssmooth · 28/10/2018 08:54

What about getting him a special copy of a book he loves? First edition or something like that?

A subscription to a history magazine?

ThunderInMyHeart · 28/10/2018 08:59

Lord Denning biography!

Then again, I'm a lawyer and would hate to receive a work-related gift. If he's a barrister, he spends his entire day a) reading b) about law and c) probably the judgements Denning handed down.

But Denning is The Shit.

Fantail · 28/10/2018 09:00

All of those are great ideas! While he is comfortable I have a much smaller budget, but tickets is something I could definitely do.

He also loves cricket.

We haven’t been together long. In fact this is our first Christmas together.

OMG Thunder that could be perfect! Will have to do some subtle investigation to make sure he hasn’t read it yet and not give away enough clues that he doesn’t just buy it.

A photo of you both?

unlimiteddilutingjuice · 28/10/2018 09:16

Possibly a bit naff (I like it though!) but Hammicks, the legal bookshop, do bath ducks dressed in little lawyers wigs.

QuaterMiss · 28/10/2018 09:20

Absolutely. Nothing. Law. Related.

(Trust me on this!)

unlimiteddilutingjuice · 28/10/2018 09:31

Aw, come on QuaterMiss, not even this little fellow?

NoWordForFluffy · 28/10/2018 09:32

Yeah, I'm a lawyer and would be gutted if I got a work-related gift!

HeronLanyon · 28/10/2018 09:32

Nothing law related. Unless he really is a law geek. I too am a barrister and the work takes over to such an extent I like to get away from it wherever possible ! I would hate to get anything to do with work but That is a personal thing. Without knowing his other interests (and yours) it’s hard to say. If a day away/tickets etc remember his mid week nights are unlikely to be free from work and his court diary liable to change unexpectedly. Good luck.

Lollypop701 · 28/10/2018 09:34

@unlimiteddilutingjuice
perhaps if that’s what was wrapped up, together with a hotel booking for a room with a large bath

Bowchicawowow · 28/10/2018 09:46

Has he read the Shardlake books by CJ Sansom? They are brilliant and would be right us his street.

unlimiteddilutingjuice · 28/10/2018 09:58

Hmm OK Lollypop: rubber duckie, hotel reservations and a male protitute with the face of Lord Denning?

Aethelthryth · 28/10/2018 10:03

Nothing law related! Have a look at Folio Society books- really nicely produced editions of books on a wide range of subjects. Lots of history

BlueJava · 28/10/2018 10:05

A tour of the caves at the History of Justice Museum followed by a meal? www.nationaljusticemuseum.org.uk/whats-on-at-the-national-justice-museum/#filter=.city-of-caves

TooMuchTidying · 28/10/2018 10:13

I'm a lawyer. An ex once bought me a replica Carbolic Smoke Ball desk weight/pen holder thing and I loved it. I am also nerdy. He could have it on his desk at work and all the other barristers will think it's funny.

TooMuchTidying · 28/10/2018 10:14

This guy!

ScottishDiblet · 28/10/2018 10:16

Sorry I know people are saying nothing law related but has he read The Secret Barrister book? It’s amazing! And then maybe plan a day out eg Kew Gardens with tea at maids of honours?

HeronLanyon · 28/10/2018 10:47

Careful.- only you know what set he is in etc. If someone in my set had a carbolic smoke anything on display I think most of us would think it a bit sad/odd. But many wouldn’t. Hmmm. You know best and the only important thing is what he would love of course.

ballseditupforever · 28/10/2018 11:23

Mont Blanc set including pencil, subscription to online newspaper (times or telegraph or guardian depending on his political persuasion), wine tasting course, flying lessons, cookery lessons, trip to First World War battlefields (not far, relatively cheap, Bruges is amazing and very romantic and super thought provoking if you are into history). Really lovely decanter and glass set. Is he sporty? Most prof men I know once they hit a certain age become triathlon / marathon obsessed.

I bought my dh a swanky chess set for Christmas.

ballseditupforever · 28/10/2018 11:25

Ps I'm a lawyer. I would hate to get something law related. I spend practically my whole life at work already!

Deminism · 28/10/2018 14:02

Tickets to Hamilton and the book on which it was based.

Deminism · 28/10/2018 14:02

We had the £40 tickets and they were still fab

CaseStudyResearch · 28/10/2018 15:30

Tickets for the cricket World Cup next year and then a stocking with a book and other small bits.
