Present for lawyer DP

My DP is a barrister. He’s quite well off, and can pretty much buy what he wants. He loves reading & is a bit of a geek. He loves history - including the history of law.

Any ideas? His birthday is also just after Christmas so I actually need 2 presents in quick succession.

Thanks for the suggestions. He’s been to Hamilton, got tickets to the cricket & has read that confessions book. Also has subscriptions for The Times, New Yorker & NY Times.

Something about Lord Denning might work purely because of the cricket judgement. But will have to somehow ask questions about that to make sure it hits the mark.

He does take baths to relax so the duck kinda works in a stocking containing bath salts etc. He really needs some better bath towels (too naff).

I think that with him the thought and effort count for much more than the cost (unlike my exDH who was completely value driven. That experience kn my confidence somewhat).

PS - thank you so much for all your suggestions!

Tour of Lords/the Oval? Or tickets to Witness for the prosecution at County Hall?

AdoraBell · 30/10/2018 15:22

Second the tickets for cricket World Cup. I was also going to suggest a Mont Blanc pen/set.

SwizzelsFizzers · 30/10/2018 15:59

Don't bother.

We are both high earning professionals. We can buy anything that we want at any time. We have shared money and so we are just getting a gift from joint funds.

We spend less than £5 each on presents, if we get anything at all. We get something small that they will love.

For example, my DH likes caramac bars as they remind him of his childhood, you can only get them from £ shops. I was passing last year- bought him 1 for christmas. He also likes the unusual beer that you can only get from the brewery, if I am passing I go in- not christmas, birthday etc.

Much more fun to get random little things from time to time.

Gift giving for the sake of it is just a chore and ends up possibly being a waste of money.

If he is your DP then wouldn't you just buy new towels if your house needed them?

SwizzelsFizzers · 30/10/2018 16:03

I would avoid mont blanc pens- the classic leaving gift- he probably has a drawer full.

Fantail · 30/10/2018 18:04

Swizzlers- we don’t live together. So he would have to buy them. This is our first Christmas together.

Tickets for Witness for the Prosecution at County Hall?

Though I'm another lawyer who would weep if given a law-related present. No bears with gavels, no mugs with Latin phrases, no bewigged bath ducks.

BertramKibbler · 30/10/2018 18:08

Swizzles sounds like a bit of a bore!

WellTidy · 30/10/2018 19:04

Another lawyer here who isn’t interested into law related gifts. Tickets to a play or show with cocktails before on the other hand would be fantastic.

Witness for the Prosecution supposed to be excellent, though.

Fantail · 30/10/2018 19:33

Yes - he’s actually just seen it and loved it. So highly recommended for other’s looking for gifts.

If he likes cricket, may I suggest Wisden?

TheDowagerCuntess · 30/10/2018 19:42

Don't bother.

It's their first Christmas together - of course she wants to bother!

Place marking for ideas for DB.

Aliceinwanderland · 30/10/2018 19:47

Subscription to a magazine? Private Eye or Empire depending on his taste?

HerculesMulligan · 30/10/2018 20:12

I love the New Yorker if you are thinking of a magazine subscription - it's got the best longform journalism anywhere at the moment, imo. My subscription copy turns up on a Friday too, which makes it feel like more of a treat.

If you want a book, Sapiens is v v good (and fits the history brief). There is also a sequel (for the birthday?).

Wizotto · 30/10/2018 21:33

Also a lawyer and loved the Shardlake books...

LauraMipsum · 30/10/2018 21:46

I'm a barrister and can confirm wiggy bath ducks and bears with gavels are a bit naff.

Having said that I thought the Secret Barrister book was excellent. Helena Kennedy's Eve Was Framed was great and I have her new book, Eve Was Shamed, on my Christmas list.

I was given Michael Mansfield's book one Christmas, it's the smarmiest tome since Gilderoy Lockhart's complete works, I wouldn't bother with that.

I'd love any of Lord Sumption's history books - if he is into history then those are definitely worth looking at.

Sadik · 30/10/2018 21:55

If he loves reading & history, he might like The Warmth of Other Suns about the great migration of US black citizens away from the South.

Hadestown is a musical based on myth of Orpheus showing at The National. It transferred from NY which is usually a mark of quality.
