We have done a variety of things in recent years. We did turkey lattice one year, curry another and beef last year. I really want beef wellington but they are around £30 to feed 4 people as a minimum and we could be hosting PIL so would be feeding 6-7.
What are you having?

We did capon last year and it was fantastic!! A chicken not far off the size of a turkey. We were 6 and it fed us all happily with loads of leftovers.

I'm fed up with chicken/turkey/capon/goose and am having beef this year. Fuck tradition.

Ours will be turkey as it always is but fillet of beef for New Years Eve! I reckon any showstopping roast is absolutely what is required! But by showstopping don't read expensive, more elaborate…. if your budget is chicken then stuff it and serve with all the trimmings, if you are pescatarian then salmon wellington it, splurge on beef? Then make it a fabulous piece depending on your budget and do all the trimmings like port gravy etc. It just needs to be celebration food and feel like a feast. I have a friend who does lasagne. I know her kids like it but it just doesn't feel special enough to me and you are after all creating food memories for your kids. It is important to make the effort.

Turkey beef and gammon with pigs in blanket. I'm wondering whether to risk it by waiting for reductions on Xmas eve...

We’ve always had turkey and gammon, plus the obligatory pigs in blankets. Thinking of having one of the Yorkshire pudding wraps from Lidl this year.
