We have done a variety of things in recent years. We did turkey lattice one year, curry another and beef last year. I really want beef wellington but they are around £30 to feed 4 people as a minimum and we could be hosting PIL so would be feeding 6-7.
What are you having?

I really fancy fillet of beef but DH is appalled at the suggestion and says Christmas just won't be the same without turkey. Humph. If I could afford both I would! Will do a small ham instead.

ClariceBeanthatsme · 30/10/2018 07:56

It's not even up for debate in our house it will be turkey, already ordered from the local butchers.

sonlypuppyfat · 30/10/2018 08:31

Cockerell it's really expensive but so tasty

SnowyMountains · 30/10/2018 08:37

It depends, if it's just DD and I we will just have a nice cut of meat or a small roast chicken with a leg of ham

Neither us a fans of Turkey and it's just not economical for the two of us.

BarbedBloom · 30/10/2018 19:18

We are having duck this year

Kintan · 30/10/2018 19:22

Duck and rib of beef, and a salmon wellington for our pescatarian.

HashTagLil · 30/10/2018 19:39

Last year we had beef, this year I have a leg of lamb in the freezer. We always had turkey breast before that, but I feel it's too expensive these days.

LilMy33 · 30/10/2018 19:46

Lamb. It’s our favourite. Will also have pigs in blankets.

drumandthebass · 30/10/2018 20:03

Always turkey, and will always be turkey

driggle · 30/10/2018 21:27

Turkey. We had a delicious leg of lamb at Easter and I said then that we should have it for Christmas as turkey is a bit meh. But now the day is nearing it just doesn't seem right not to have turkey!

OhTheRoses · 30/10/2018 21:46

The last few years I've done a small turkey (about 12.50) and a boned stuffed duck. Waitrose and M&S do nice ones.

Beef welly is easy. The fillet for six will coat at least £40-£50 though.

All you do is: roast with a little oil for 25 mins. Finely chop about 3/4lb mush and make duxelles with butter and a slosh of wine, herbs and bread crumbs if a bit sloshy. Roll out 1/3 pack of puff pastry and put on an oiled baking tray. Spread ottom of fillet with good pork pate and squash on some mushroom mix. Place on rolled puff pastry. Spead rest with pate and wodge on mushroom mix. Cover with remaining puff pastry. Trim and scallop bottom of pastry. Now make a very shallow criss cross over the top. Brush with beaten egg. Takes about 35 mins for medium rare. Serve with a really good red wine gravy. I like it best with creamed potatoes and something like purple sprouting.

I cant athord meat so will be doing.quorn turkey burgers.

RhythmStix · 30/10/2018 21:53

'Afford'

OhTheRoses · 30/10/2018 21:57

Cpuld you do a big turkey leg? They are really cheap still now. You can get 3/4 dinners off one.

EvaHarknessRose · 30/10/2018 22:00

I get a frozen Aldi or Tesco or Morrisons turkey crown. In the past I have splashed out on farm shop whole turkeys or crowns which cost a fortune and honestly the frozen crowns are just as good and more space in the oven. I do like the sound of the beef wellington though.

I sometimes get a large piece of salmon to roast too.

megletthesecond · 30/10/2018 22:00

Chicken.

BiddyPop · 31/10/2018 08:28

We do turkey and spices beef usually.

We have done pheasant once. Interesting...(but we’re not great at cooking game).

I keep saying we should try a goose some year , dh keeps resisting.

But we do enjoy turkey as we only cook it twice a year - Christmas and Thanksgiving (small joint for an after-work dinner for TG).

goose1964 · 31/10/2018 16:22

Capon ( aka a bloody huge chicken ) last year and this year either duck or turkey. My personal favourite is goose ( nothing to do with my user name) but our cheap supplier is no longer around

mrsoutnumbered · 01/11/2018 16:15

Usually turkey as my mum gets it, cooks it and brings it round! But I am am tempted to do lamb this year. .....

Billydessert · 01/11/2018 17:55

Duck and ham hocks

Stompythedinosaur · 01/11/2018 18:59

We have beef (dp's preference), chicken (for my db who doesn't like beef) and a roasted veg strudel (for me). Dm, Dmil and the dc have a bit of each. We also do pigs in blankets. And gammon on boxing day.

DelurkingAJ · 01/11/2018 21:07

Beef and gammon. We do turkey for Thanksgiving (DMum is American) and can’t face turkey twice in such a short time.

reluctantbrit · 02/11/2018 11:16

Leg of wild boar like we had last year.

We are only three so a turkey is a waste of food and money and none of us really likes it enough to buy a crown. DD and I don’t like beef, DD doesn’t like lamb and I think chicken is a bit of a mess with cutting, I prefer a easier to serve meat and chicken is on the menu often enough anyway.

Scoose · 02/11/2018 11:21

Goose and turkey

pouraglasshalffull · 02/11/2018 11:30

Turkey and Gammon, although I'm wanting a meat that's a bit more moist (ugh that word) this year
