Looking for inspiration for DS2. We have most of the geography board games from Amazon , he’s too young to be sent off back packing on his own Grin Any ideas ??

He’s not into toys or Lego and I struggle with him every year .
He has an Xbox he shares with older DS .

The scratch-off foil maps are nice to keep a record of where he has been in the world. About £15 in Waterstones.

LostMyRubySlippers · 27/10/2018 18:50

I ordered some of those scratch off maps last year from either eBay or amazon

CaseStudyResearch · 27/10/2018 19:21

Geology kits - National Geographic or Science Museum do great ones.

Earth model making kit.

Nat Geo Kids digital subscription.

Depending on where you live, a trip to a natural science etc type museum/exhibition?

17caterpillars1mouse · 27/10/2018 19:24

Jigsaw I the british isles

imsorryiasked · 27/10/2018 19:29

Assume you already have maponimoes game?
Possibly a bit young for this puzzle book from Ordnance Survey
And some great items on this site

HotInWinter · 27/10/2018 19:30

The boxes don't usually deliver abroad, but many of the magazine subscriptions deliver abroad. I'm sure Natural Geographic will deliver abroad - but i guess it depends on how remote you are. Ours come through about 3 weeks after posting to KSA.

sixtyeleven · 27/10/2018 19:33

huge wall map
compass
geology field kit

ja9r · 27/10/2018 19:35

Massive map for his bedroom wall.

Duvet cover that is a map of the world?

MissLingoss · 27/10/2018 20:16

Does he have a really good atlas? Philips is a specialist publisher of atlases.

Also, do you know about Stanford's map shop? Have a look at their website to see if there's anything he might like:
www.stanfords.co.uk/london-store

If he's at all interested in history, you can also get historical maps and atlases, which show what places looked like in the past, and how they've changed.

Branleuse · 27/10/2018 20:18

I got my geography mad son a cool.duvet cover with map of the world recently

alfiesmam · 27/10/2018 20:34

@misslingoss really interesting site thank you

Horrible Geography books by Anita Ganieri (similar to Horrible History books).
Book of local walks, and a compass.
Bear Grylls fiction books. He had a series of paperbacks published this year, but I can't remember what they are called!
Flags of the World jigsaw.

NotCitrus · 27/10/2018 23:00

Atlas of the Real World: Mapping the way we live
or the State of the World Atlas

Maybe Bill Bryson's travel books?

Also introduce him to sporcle.com and geoguessr...

motortroll · 27/10/2018 23:05

Geography teacher here!! Loads of good suggestions above but recommend national geographic products!!

Slappinthebass · 27/10/2018 23:11

My dd asked for a chisel for Christmas once... . I got her one in a fossil digging kit, along with some Geodes you can smash open. National Geographic do lots of brilliant kits, their gemstone dig kit is much better quality than others, and the have loads more. You can buy packs of brilliant fossils.

One year my dd had an advent calendar filled with clues describing a rock/mineral and she had to use the clue and a national geographic book on precious stones (for kids) to work out what it was called, and then she got the stone once she's worked it out. Sounds totally wanky but that's what she loved at the time, and she was home educated so it kept her busy in the mornings.

Slappinthebass · 27/10/2018 23:16

Moon in My Room is cool too, but I'm not sure that counts as geography.

LeMesmer · 28/10/2018 00:22

Thanks for so many great ideas for my DS. Maybe look at DVDs about travel, geography? Maybe even a day away to somewhere he is interested in. If you are in the south we did a fossil walk last year which was great.

Have you ever gone geocaching? It's a fabulous way to explore both your local area and future afield and will take you to places on your doorstep which you didn't know were there. There's also lots of groups on Facebook to swap notes and recommendations for good caches. Not only do you have physical caches to find but also earth caches which are usually areas of outstanding interest. We've been to some amazing places such as abandoned quarries where the geology is amazing to see. All you need is the smart phone app (c.geo) or a GPS and you need to register a user name at www.geocaching.com/play
