Books for children - what is everyone getting?

PassportMessUp · 26/10/2018 19:50

So 2 children age 6 and 9.
Annuals - match of the day and natural history museum.
Just 6 year old - dinosaur diary, Rupert and bear, the bolds.
Just 9 year old - the explorer, time travelling with a hamster, jack Stewart or a beast quest.

Christmas theme - a boy called Christmas and the dinosaur who pooped Christmas.

May all change when I get to the book shop!

Anyone one else or any thoughts - I always find level / age to get right.

My 6 yr old got guiness book of records last week for his birthday and loves it. He reads a few pages every night so probably won't get anymore books. It is a great buy though so putting it out there as an idea!

Leeds2 · 26/10/2018 20:01

If your 6 year old is a girl, there is usually a Rainbow Fairy Christmas edition out.
Guiness Book of Records.
13 Storey Treehouse series.
Both might like Humphrey the Hamster series by Betty Birney, although 6 year old might need some help reading it. They do an Early Readers version of it too.
Paddington, especially if they have seen the recent film(s).
Dirtie Bertie for the 6 year old.
Roman Mysteries, or Percy Jackson, for the 9 year old.

DS who will be 18mo at Christmas is getting a dr Seuss collection from my DM and some Julia Donaldsons I picked up from the charity shop in excellent nick for 50p each!

Leeds2 · 26/10/2018 20:04

PassportMessUp · 26/10/2018 20:07

The Neverending Story was a favourite at about 9. Also Stories For Boys Who Dare To Be Different.

stridesy · 27/10/2018 10:10

My 9 year old has just started reading David Williams but I've got the murderous maths bookset. He already has a lot of the horrible science and geography books

Stompythedinosaur · 27/10/2018 10:54

I've just done my Xmas book order!

7yo dd1 is getting a Judy Blume set, The Never Girls set, a Dotty Detective set, Kunkush (about a cat refugee) and a how to draw book.

5yo dd2 is getting a Curious Pearl set, a Tales from India collection, the Jolly Pocket Postman, You Choose in Space, Would You Rather and a cute colouring book.

I know it is a lot, but dd1 in particular is a very keen reader.

Stompythedinosaur · 27/10/2018 10:56

Last year's hits were Goodnight Stories for Rebel Girls and The Fairytale Hairdresser.

KC225 · 27/10/2018 12:13

11 year old twins. DS Roblox and MInecraft annuals. DD Free Rein books based on the Netflix stable show she is obsessed with

MissMarplesKnitting · 27/10/2018 12:16

5yo the unicorn that pooped rainbows, roald Dahl (her own ones)

9yo Diary of an Awesome kid, Tom Gates X 2 and a huge animal book I picked up in Smith's for a fiver.

Dinosauratemydaffodils · 27/10/2018 12:36

Almost 4 year old ds is obsessed with big bad wolves so is getting a variety of fairy stories, especially retellings of Little Red Riding Hood.

He's also getting a couple of Alison Jay's books (www.waterstones.com/author/alison-jay/35796) because I love her illustrations.

Dd who will be six months at Christmas is getting "An Elsa Beskow Gift Collection: Children of the Forest and other beautiful books" as a box set.

Then she's getting The Secret Garden for her book shelf. Ds is getting The Little Mermaid and other fairy stories both from the Illustrated with interactive range (www.harpercollins.co.uk/9780062692573/the-secret-garden-illustrated-with-interactive-elements/ and www.harpercollins.co.uk/9780062692597/little-mermaid-and-other-fairy-tales-the-illustrated-with-interactive-elements/).

I've also got some "That's not my" books for dd and a couple of other picture books for ds.

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 27/10/2018 12:55

10 year old is getting some Rick Riordan books - he loves the Percy Jackson series. And if there's a new Harry Potter illustrated edition out this year he'll get that too.

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 27/10/2018 12:57

Oh, A Boy Called Christmas is a great book - but I'd give it in the run up to Christmas for reading up to the big day!

SixToEightInchesOfSnow · 27/10/2018 14:05

In the run up to Christmas, ds (9) is getting The Christmas Monster by David Walliams and the new Diary of a Wimpy Kid, which is Christmas/ winter themed.

For Christmas he’s getting the Harry Potter books that are the books that they read in the books of that makes sense 😂.

SixToEightInchesOfSnow · 27/10/2018 14:06

Oh also, Stories For Boys Who Dare To Be Different is Ds’s all time favourite book!

PassportMessUp · 27/10/2018 14:41

So glad I’m not the only one! Lots more to think about - a morning in the book shop is in order Grin I’m a avid reader myself so it is the one bit I get excited by - I wish h had the ability to read as I have ideas for him too.

OP posts:
PassportMessUp · 27/10/2018 14:48

Oh and those Alison Jay books are beautiful- perfect for h’s family as there are no words and they can discuss in their native tongue.

My 9 year old girl loves Dork Diaries, found an amazing deal on Book People, £11 for the whole set and £13 for a set of Diary of a wimpy Kid. Maybe 'The Creakers' as she looked at it in Waterstones, Misadventures of Max Crumbly and a Roblox Annual.

AgnesBrownsCat · 27/10/2018 15:11

Tom Gates is very popular with my 9 year old atm . The teenager will be getting some Patrick Ness books and some manga novels

1stTimeMama · 27/10/2018 15:16

9yr old daughter Harry Potter Box set, Shakespeare for children set, and a Brilliant Women in various genres set. I could buy her books all day, every day!

5yr old son, the Truth Fairy by Matt Haig, and I'm not sure what else. He's not big in to books.

4yr old son Animal Factivity gift box, and something dinosaury.

2 yr old son, 2 x board books about vehicles and animals, and a couple of the Bear books by Karma Wilson.

Theonewiththecat · 28/10/2018 08:16

Dd (9) is only getting
Ripleys believe it or not
Guinness world records
The Christmausarus

She has enough unread books in her bedroom to fill the library.
She loves reading but she tends to read her school book as opposed to books from home.

Fantail · 28/10/2018 08:26

DD7 is getting Little Mrs Pepperpot & Ballet Shoes. Both books I loved at her age.

Potentially an illustrated Harry Potter too.

Stompythedinosaur · 28/10/2018 08:32

Fantail I haven't thought about Ballet Shoes for years, I loved that book! Might have to steal your idea and get dd1 a copy.

Slappinthebass · 28/10/2018 09:04

@Stompythedinosaur I got my DD a Judy Blume set for her 11th birthday. I read Are You There God It's Me Margaret as I remember enjoying it as a child and also because I wanted to see if it was still relevant. There are some scenes in the book I don't think are appropriate for her to read at 11, never mind 7. For eg, Margaret's father having porn in his bedroom, speculations that the teacher must fancy the 11 year old girl with breasts. I'd read them first if I were you.
