Books for children - what is everyone getting?

PassportMessUp · 26/10/2018 19:50

So 2 children age 6 and 9.
Annuals - match of the day and natural history museum.
Just 6 year old - dinosaur diary, Rupert and bear, the bolds.
Just 9 year old - the explorer, time travelling with a hamster, jack Stewart or a beast quest.

Christmas theme - a boy called Christmas and the dinosaur who pooped Christmas.

May all change when I get to the book shop!

Anyone one else or any thoughts - I always find level / age to get right.

stompy - I’m hoping she will enjoy it. She can be unpredictability picky.

Loved The Lion, the Witch & the Wardrobe. Hated The BFG. Loved Charlie & the Chocolate Factory.

She has, however, really loved ballet this year, & our cat is called Posey.

Ds(almost 7) - how the grinch stole christmas, George's marvellous medicine, oi cat

Ds(almost 3) - the ugly 5, press here, the dinosaur that pooped Christmas

Dsd (9) - the midnight gang

Slappinthebass · 28/10/2018 09:23

My 11 year old will probably get the updated Pokemon handbook as she's loved her original for years, A Geek In Japan, the graphic novel adaption of Northern Lights, and some manga. And the Pokemon Annual just like the last 6 years.

5 year old
This is How we do it (day in the life of 7 children from around the world)
Pick a Pine Tree
LOL annual

2 year old
Imagine, John Lennon picture book
City Block (we have CountaBlock which is AMAZING and I highly recommend for age 2-5 to grasp number up to 100. it's my 5 year old that actually loves it but younger ones would get longer)

PodgeBod · 28/10/2018 11:59

2 year old:
Bing noisy book
Bing toilet training book
Mog box set
Plus some lift the flap books

Not a clue for the 3 year old. She mostly likes fairy tales and we already have those.

CantSleepClownsWillEatMe · 28/10/2018 12:18

DS 7 is getting a couple of the Usborne books - space and science. He's quite into factual books at the moment. Also the 5th of the Thirteen Story Treehouse series, some Barry Loser and a couple of non series books that look good.

DD 9 likes writing short stories, she's getting a book on writing and a selection of fiction: Scarlet & Ivy, Cassidy Bond, the Rose Muddle Mysteries, the Railway Children and Anne of Green Gables and a couple of others.

@Stompythedinosaur in one of the "fudge" books (i think its tales of a forth grade nothing) it has a chapter about christmas and spills the beans on santa. Its how I learned when I was a kid! I skipped that chapter when I was reading to DS1, but be aware!

Stompythedinosaur · 28/10/2018 13:25

Slappin the set has some of the younger aimed books, mainly the fudge ones, but thanks for the warning. The Book People are selling it as for 7+.

TheOnlyPink eek, thanks for the warning! I might keep the books back for a while then!

The truth pixie written by Matt Haig is an amazing book. I've read it over half term and can not recommend it enough.

naivetyisthenewblack · 28/10/2018 14:50

Ooh, the same age as my kids, pretty much!

9yo DS loved the Accidental Pirates series by Claire Fayers. Great fun and beautifully written. Often DS reads alone, but sometimes we read to him. This book was one DP and I fought over reading to him as we both love it and wanted to know what happened next Grin

The first one is Journey to Magical North; Journey to Dragon Island is the sequel.

DS also loved the Hamish series, starts with Hamish and the WorldStoppers

And he enjoyed the Story Street books - look like you can get the first 3 for for all 3 on Amazon

naivetyisthenewblack · 28/10/2018 14:51

That should say - the first 3 for £5.99!

naivetyisthenewblack · 28/10/2018 14:54

Just noticed the first Hamish is only £2 on Amazon. This book is great fun! DD was 8 when he first read them IIRC.

6yo: a set of Roald Dahl audio CDs and a picture dictionary for language lessons we are probably starting soon.
4yo: Oi Cat and Oi Duck Billed Platypus.

My 10 year old wants a zillion different Manga books. I think she will be disappointed she doesn't get them all (I will get her a couple). I have already got the Beano Annual but she says she doesn't want it this year. I will put my name on the gift tag then (I would prefer Bunty but sadly they don't make them anymore. Sigh).

Spam88 · 29/10/2018 10:43

My DD will be 19 months. I've just bought her a few board books with various interactive/touchy feely bits (including one about spiders because I'm desperate for her to like spiders so she can deal with them for us when she's older 😂). I've also decided to do a book advent calendar this year, so she's got 23 Christmassy books plus the night before Christmas for Christmas Eve. I figure we'll just put them away after Christmas then and we can reuse them for a few years.

I'm supposed to be done with her shopping, so I'm trying very hard not to but anymore, but I've popped a few others on her list for family. These include Baby Loves Science, Little People Big Dreams and Busy Books (although I've already bought her the Christmas one).

LilMy33 · 29/10/2018 11:30

DS is getting stories for boys who dare to be different and some marvel hero books. He’s nearly 8 and has additional needs loves all things superhero.

DD is 11 and getting a Jacqueline Wilson book and fantastic beasts and where to find them.

They’re both getting Christmassy books 1st December that I got 2nd hand on eBay: terry Pratchett hogfather and Christmas on Exeter street. All the other Christmas books we’ve collected over the years come out 1st December too: Shirley Hughes ones, Father Christmas needs a wee, Raymond Briggs ones, nativity. DD likes reading them to her brother probably so she gets to enjoy them still without feeling like a baby.

Darcey37 · 29/10/2018 21:48

Dd9 will have Jean Ure's Dance Trilogy, more Emily Windsnap mermaid books, The Secret Garden, David Williams new one The Ice Monster, children's Shakespeare collection and usually a nice big special pop up - maybe the new Harry Potter one.

slappinthebass · 30/10/2018 23:24

@Stompythedinosaur oh phew! I'll keep my eye out for that one for my younger dd, the fudge books were my favourite when I was 7.

Pascha · 30/10/2018 23:41

My 8 and nearly-6 try olds will be getting a joke book in the stockings. I also have a set of Time Hunters stories to split between them.

Ds1 likes straight adventure stories about heroes and explorers and has no truck with what he terms stupid cartoony books like captain underpants. He loved the Bear Grylls adventures if anyone is looking for a recommendation.

Ds2 likes pirates so maybe a pirate story or two. I don't know.

Both love listening to Terry Pratchett in the car so i'm going to dig out my copy of the Bromeliad for them for bedtime reading.

Isadora2007 · 31/10/2018 03:41

We have a huge box of Christmas books that come out at advent and get added to each year. This year dd(9) is getting the truth pixie for her pre-Xmas book (we got the other Matt Haig ones last year) and ds(6) is getting to hear the first Matt Haig ones this year!

For Xmas dd will get an animals annual as she loves her pets. And a new drawing book plus the multi storey treehouse Books on CD for bedtime listening. Ds will get the gamer book recommended here and the box set of How to train your Dragon books too.
Baby grandson will get some Story sacks- a nursery rhyme book with a star puppet toy, that’s not my dinosaur book with push along wooden dinosaur, peck peck book with a bird toy (maybe a rubber duck)

Joanne1991 · 31/10/2018 08:19

I used to love little Mrs Pepperpot (I'm 27 now)
