...to make them more appealing?
My oh said the other day that we only seem to have sprouts on Christmas day. Yes, well... I am not a fan, but I know some people (including him) love them. A friend was telling me how they do them with chestnuts, which sounds good. Have you got a special way of serving them so they appeal to all?

I love sprouts! The trick is to not cook them too long, mushy sprouts are not good. Roasting them is nice, I also like to shred them and stir fry them - if you add soy sauce and a little brown sugar it tastes like the crispy seaweed you get in Chinese restaurants.

I have them just steamed they should still have a bit of bite.I don;t really like my vegetables over ponced .

I sometimes do carrots with some butter and flaked almonds , lightly fried to colour.

Love chestnuts at Christmas , we call them "Teddy Bears Noses" Xmas Grin

Endofthelinefinally · 19/10/2018 18:40

Stirfried with bacon and chestnuts.

Lucisky · 19/10/2018 18:43

Carrots I love. I do them with mint and parsley, salt/pepper, butter and a pinch of sugar.
Shredded sprouts sounds a good one.

but if you want your sprouts done for christmas day. they should be on a low heat now.its the law

Yonijust · 19/10/2018 18:44

With chopped bacon fried in olive oil, add crushed garlic.

Then add previously cooked sprouts (once cooked leave in cold water, so they stay firm & not soggy)

Gently mix sprouts, garlic & bacon with cream until warm.

My DH, DC and I love Brussels and between October and February would be unlikely not to include them if we are having a roast.
My particular favourite is Californian style;Trim the bottoms, then cut the sprouts in half from top to bottom. Heat a large saute pan over medium heat. Add the oil and the Brussels sprouts. Cook for several minutes, until they are bright-green, tender and golden on the cut edges.

Lucisky · 19/10/2018 18:54

Garlic, bacon and cream sounds good. Might disguise the taste a bit.

There is a theory that a dislike of sprouts is genetic, like cucumber. In this case nothing you do will make you like them.

MrsGarethSouthgate · 19/10/2018 19:13

My favourite thing to do with sprouts is to leave them in the shop Envy not envy

oldsewandsew · 19/10/2018 19:14

I can’t say I love them, but I always hated them until I cooked them myself, and they definitely should not be overcooked! They go very bitter. I find them quite bland when boiled for 5 or 6 minutes, so I guess you could flavour them however you like.

Spankyoumuchly · 19/10/2018 19:18

Just how my Grandma cooked them. Cooked for 100 years until they're so soft they can have the water squeezed out with a saucepan lid.
I miss my Grandma.

Either plain steamed, or roasted and then lightly dressed with (preferably hazel) nut oil. We eat them as much as possible when they're in season.

At Christmas lunch, however , sprouts are practically a stir-fry in their own right, with bacon, chestnuts and shed-loads of fresh parsley. They make the BEST Boxing Day bubble and squeak!

TooMinty · 19/10/2018 19:29

If you hate them and your DH likes them, then cooking them is his problem?

But I second using bacon to make them tastier!

Sillybilly1234 · 19/10/2018 19:40

Put some vinegar on them. I know it doesn't sound nice but it definitely is.

Slitheringcorpsefeed · 19/10/2018 19:41

Nigella's recipe with parsley, pancetta and chestnuts is great! here

PrincessTwilightStoleMyToddler · 19/10/2018 19:44

Cubed chorizo in a hot frying pan, heat until sizzling, add shredded sprouts and those peeled chestnuts that come in the vacuum packs, stir fry, season to taste, add a sprinkling of chopped parsley and serve.

mycatplotsdeath · 19/10/2018 19:47

Stir fried with bacon, chilli and chestnuts.
They are delicious

caribari72 · 19/10/2018 19:47

I have hated them for 44 years...

For each of those years (maybe not as a baby) , I have TRIED. Every Christmas, I tried ONE. (There are very few foods that make me boak)

Last year I heard someone on the radio say "just pop them in the oven coated in a little olive oil, salt and pepper"

In a bid to save money (dead cheap) and make my family healthy, I persisted.

I AM A CONVERT, aged 45yrs.

Try it! (Also, buy some candles for the ensuing environmental changes)

I'm a fan of sprouts. Often I have them plain with a knob salted butter, or quickly fried with chopped bacon, but my favourite way is to make a puree with a mouli, and add a little cream.

Pebblespony · 19/10/2018 20:02

I love sprouts. Definitely my favourite veg. DH isn't keen but I'm going to try some of the nice ideas on here.

Lucisky · 19/10/2018 20:53

Thanks, some good ideas here.
The genetic thing is something I have read too. Apparently coriander involves a genetic like/dislike too (although I love that).
I might have some sprout experiments before Christmas, that'll please the oh.

Coriander tastes like soap to me. Must be genetic as I can't imagine anyone liking it.

redsummershoes · 19/10/2018 21:06

cut in half.
pan fried with breadcrumbs and cinnamon and a little sugar
