What to get a man who likes nothing

memememememememememeem · 17/10/2018 20:26

Every year is a struggle with my father. Usually I get him some t shirts, but he's having a weight related op soon so that's not a good idea.

Budget £20

  • hates sports
  • doesn't read books
  • doesn't watch dvds more than once/doesn't like dramas or much on TV anyway
  • doesn't drink tea
  • isn't keen on ornaments, pictures, or candles
  • doesn't bother with pjs, slippers or a dressing gown
  • doesn't have baths
  • isn't keen on contemporary music

I'm stuck.

If you speak to him, what does he say he's been doing?

memememememememememeem · 17/10/2018 20:30

He likes holidays, and going on trains (not steam trains), but that's about it. He wouldn't want a model train or a holiday book though

Nice pillow for his bed.
Costa voucher
Food or drink of some kind

katienana · 17/10/2018 20:37

What about a travel pillow, I got my dad a really nice one from Boots a couple of years ago

memememememememememeem · 17/10/2018 20:39

Travel pillow could be good!

Socks?

KC225 · 17/10/2018 21:33

Gaffer tape across his cake hole to stop him moaning.

Rainbowqueeen · 17/10/2018 21:38

Does he drink alcohol? Bottle of something he can share if friends pop round or he is invited out?

Movie tickets

Bumbumtaloo · 17/10/2018 21:47

Tbh I’d just give him an Amazon (or somewhere else if he’d prefer) that way he can buy or put it towards what he likes/wants/needs. Yes, I know that’s a cop out!

noego · 17/10/2018 21:48

Railcard.

Depending on how old he is. Could get him a Senior Rail Card. He would get 30% of all rail travel. Then there is a Network Rail card. Don't actually know what benefits you get with that one.

Kemer2018 · 17/10/2018 21:48

If he likes nothing, get him nothing.

Hellywelly10 · 17/10/2018 21:50

Posh soap?

DeaflySilence · 17/10/2018 21:51

Get him what he likes.

bookmum08 · 17/10/2018 21:57

I usually give my Dad a tenner plus a choc Santa. He is a train/plane/bus spotter and only really likes his spotter books which are only sold in about 3 shops in the country and you have to know exactly which ones to get. I put the tenner in one of those money wallets to make it look more like a gift.

Alanamackree · 18/10/2018 08:36

What about an experience gift?

borntobequiet · 18/10/2018 08:43

Sorry but the obvious answer is nothing. Get him a card. Spend £20 on nice things for the food bank, at least they will be appreciated.

pastabest · 18/10/2018 08:58

I thought the go to present for hard to buy for men on MN was a lock picking training set?

Failing that what about a fancy 3D jigsaw type thing

Mmmmdanone · 18/10/2018 09:12

He probably doesn't care if he gets nothing- so do that!

TwoGinScentedTears · 18/10/2018 09:21

Upgrade something he already owns and loves?

Think about his daily life. Does he wear glasses? Hats? Does he drink gin/whisky/beer/wine? Does he like gardening? Does he take a flask on the train? Or use binoculars for train spotting?

crochetmonkey74 · 18/10/2018 09:31

I have this experience too with a relative OP and we always club together (me and my sis) and get a large gift bag of lovely food from local farm shop/ waitrose/ M&S

for us normally- cheese, pies, chutneys, ales, posh nuts and posh biscuits.
It always goes over well- we did a voucher one year but he never spent it as he doesn't ever want anything!

Last year BIL/SIL No. 1 posted MIL a hamper with some lovely bits but she was a bit "meh" about it (stuff she wouldn't eat etc.). MIL was with us for the actual day and local BIL/SIL No. 2 popped round with some presents, including hers from them. She told them about the other BIL/SIL hamper and then opened her present and, yes, another collection of lovely food etc. Lots of fixed smiles...

spanishwife · 18/10/2018 13:56

I would take him out for an experience or a nice meal

Angelcd · 18/10/2018 20:49

JosellaPlayton · 18/10/2018 20:54

Shower gel - everyone washes and if he doesn’t take baths he must shower
Shaving stuff unless he’s bearded and then beard grooming products if you think he’ll use them
Chocolate or other food stuffs
Coffee
Alcohol
Subscription to a magazine
Tickets to a day out/show/concert he might like
Failing all else a voucher for amazon so he can choose his own gift

crochetmonkey74 · 19/10/2018 08:31
