Hi! My DS will be 4 months at Christmas and I’m not sure what to get him

I don’t really want to get him lots of presents as let’s be realistic, hes hardly going to remember it

However I do still want to get him something...more something we can keep as his ‘first Christmas present’

Family are likely to get clothes and other practical things

Does anyone have any good ideas/what did you do for your DC when they were small?

A lovely stocking?

We just got ours a big Lamaze toy thing. Blush

RiverTam · 10/10/2018 16:04

we bought DD a lovely wooden Brio fire engine. she has rarely played with it but it's a nice momento of her first Christmas.

Pebblespony · 10/10/2018 16:06

We got some kind of activity thing with lights and sounds that could be pushed along when she got older. Don't over think it. If you want something to keep then bear in mind you'll prob have to put it away rather than let him use it as everything gets trashed by an enthusiastic toddler.

KennDodd · 10/10/2018 16:06

hes hardly going to remember it

No, he's NOT going to remember it. Just get him a small toy and a 'my first Christmas' tree decoration thingy. Save your money, you'll need it when he's older.

I’d go with a book, something nice like an illustrated edition of a children’s classic and write a lovely message inside. I still have books like this that I received as a baby/child and now read them with DD.

I’d also get him a Christmas outfit for cute factor/photos and maybe a couple of age appropriate toys that he can enjoy on the day.

Baby bottles. :)

FusionChefGeoff · 10/10/2018 16:11

Second the idea of a beautiful (personalised?) stocking - an investment for future years.

Kathulu · 10/10/2018 16:15

Ours got a special Christmassy outfit and some lovely photographs taken with family. Our first got a lovely rocking horse, nothing expensive but he, and his younger brother, loved it as they grew older and even now I have to sing the "little pony song" when they're upset - even though they're teenagers and they'd kill me if their friends found out 😂.

As they're so young I'd forgo the presents and use photo's / videos to show them in later years so they can see they were there. Save the money for the inevitable expense of future years.

@BiscuitDrama has a great idea. At 4 months a nice lamaze pram toy will be really useful.

Ds was about that age last year and recieved those and some fisher price maracas.

E20mom · 10/10/2018 16:22

Not a keepsake but we got our then 4 month old a jumperoo for Christmas last year and it was by far the best thing.

legalseagull · 10/10/2018 16:25

I got my one month old a lovely hard backed illustrated book and wrote in it. Also got her a lovely wooden cot mobile and a teddy.

Believeitornot · 10/10/2018 16:27

I can’t remember what we got for our first and he’s now 9’years old. He was 3 months at Christmas. So I wouldn’t worry massively about it!

We got our second a Christmas themed baby grow.

ALemonyPea · 10/10/2018 16:27

Something like a rocking toy for when he is a little older. A personalised stocking and bauble would also equally be as thoughtful. Something you can take out each year.

The first Christmas gift thing is purely for you, your DS won’t remember it. We have bought each of the DC a decoration/bauble every year, they chose their own when they were able to, and when they leave home, the decorations will go with them.

Lindah1 · 10/10/2018 16:29

I was going to say a jumperoo too and then buy a little keepsake

ThatGirl82 · 10/10/2018 16:30

Last year our DD was only ten weeks old at Christmas. We got her a snow globe for her to put on her window sill every Christmas and a personalised stocking. Other people mostly got her clothes.

NWQM · 10/10/2018 16:30

Another vote here for something to keep as a memento of first Christmas.....wrapped up in shiny paper and a big box. Both to be scrunched and chewed :-) Buy each other a present. You’ll not get to have a look in for the next x years. Enjoy every special minute

BelindasRedPlasticHandcuffs · 10/10/2018 16:59

I'm 27 and still use the personalised cross stitched stocking I received for my first Christmas. I wouldn't be without it at Christmas, it's one of my favourite possessions. Definitely something to consider!

Dinosauratemydaffodils · 10/10/2018 17:02

Dd will be 6 months, she's getting a Grimms rainbow, some holztiger animal figures to add to the collection we already have and useful bits and bobs such as clothes, socks, tights and some bowls/plates/cutlery of her own for weaning.

She will also get a classic book (thinking the Secret Garden this year) in a lovely edition and a Christmas decoration. When her big brother was born, I thought buying him a hardback edition of a book for both birthdays and Christmas would mean he'd leave home with a mini library and hopefully a love of reading so now will do for both of them.

Dinosauratemydaffodils · 10/10/2018 17:04

Also agree with the stocking, I'm 41 and still use the Christmas stocking my dm made me that first Christmas.

Ds has one I made him and Dd is getting my df's (he died just before she was born) but I'm going to embellish it.

Pascha · 10/10/2018 17:06

We got ds1 a Jumperoo and a nice stocking too.

stridesy · 10/10/2018 17:47

Highchair. Babywalker. Megablox. Crawl ball.peg puzzles. Toy for garden? Book collection.

Nixen · 10/10/2018 17:50

We are getting our wee one a personalised wooden toy box from my 1st years. She’ll be nearly 4 months. I’ve gone way over board with presents to be honest but oh well! PFB syndrome haha

Anticyclone · 10/10/2018 17:54

A really good, classic book. One that you can read to them and enjoy for years to come. Write a nice little message in the front, it will be a lovely memory to look back on whenever you read the book.

SleepyMcEdie · 10/10/2018 17:59

Jumperoo!

Kathulu · 10/10/2018 18:17

A really nice copy of "The Night Before Christmas" something you can incorporate into your own Christmas traditions for the coming years. i got a beautiful pop-up version as a present a couple of years ago and it's a real keepsake.
