something like this and put it in a potplant? link

Nyima · 09/10/2018 20:55

As a teacher the best things are consumables - Decent wine. Fancy chocolates.

The most valuable things are cards with a genuine message of appreciation.

LJdorothy · 09/10/2018 21:44

Yes, a card with a message. The chocolates get eaten and the wine gets drunk but I treasure the messages from parents and pupils.

Stompythedinosaur · 10/10/2018 14:56

We often do chocolates, but have also done pretty notebooks.

PasswordRejection · 10/10/2018 15:48

Can you team up with other parents and get vouchers? We do this at my DC's school. One of the parents sets up a justgiving page and ask people to donate anonymously so no one need be embarrassed if they can't afford as much as someone else. The teachers end up with a decent amount of John Lewis vouchers. DC's TA told us she bought a lovely pair of boots with hers last Christmas!

AgnesBrownsCat · 10/10/2018 20:51

A pretty mug from Emma Bridgewater but only at sale prices . Or a Christmas tree decoration by Newbridge Silverware or Belleek China .
Or a booktoken .

Sofabitch · 10/10/2018 20:52

Just seen this on bargain thread. Perfect for teachers

uk.loccitane.com/V2/pages/common/Search.aspx?search=Bauble&c=83&l=1

If you also type in code SHEA you get a free gift set worth £12
If you then type in the code ANDEL you get free delivery.

I love a bargain

HandbagCrazy · 10/10/2018 21:07

As a teachers wife, can I suggest that you don't buy any mugs / signs / trinkets with worlds best teacher on them please? DH gets loads and they get binned as no room for them anymore.

Favourite gifts for him have been a voucher, a bottle of whiskey, a notebook with a pack of coloured pens & highlighters and food (choc orange and biscuits).
Someone also bought him a cactus once, and a mini globe because he told the class stories about countries he travelled to and he loved those.

KC225 · 10/10/2018 23:37

We did 10 per parent, or covered Teacher and 2 part time teaching assistants and a PGCE student. All got a vouchers. Easy.

ChristmasIsMyFavourite · 12/10/2018 12:02

We give money towards a voucher.

MichelleBeatson · 12/10/2018 12:20

Chocolates is always great for my kid's teachers!

MonaChopsis · 12/10/2018 13:12

Handwritten card with a lovely message, and a £10 Amazon voucher.

Kittykatmacbill · 12/10/2018 15:36

Hand written thank you In Christmas card and a John Lewis voucher.

yellowplumpreserves · 12/10/2018 15:43

We got our child to draw a nice picture and if it printed on a mug which we filled with chocolates. It made her very very happy when she saw her teacher holding it during break time. Under £10.

Sethis · 12/10/2018 15:46

A 5 minute chat of all the parents standing in the classroom in front of the kids, telling the children to think about just how much work their teacher put in this year, and how much they are learning from them. A huge "thank you" and a round of applause.

And booze. Booze is good.

t00dle00 · 12/10/2018 16:32

I've just bought the suggestion from L'occitane I've got the free Shea set, hand cream set, gift bags, samples and the Shea bauble plus free delivery so thank you to the poster who mentioned this. I got it all for £17.

Isadora2007 · 12/10/2018 16:35

I have often bought stationery stuff for teachers, and save the children/oxfam unwrapped education themed gifts in kind (you can get these from £5-£++) with a small token gift too like chocolate.
Or what about a costa card or similar?

BewareOfDragons · 12/10/2018 21:28

I've just bought L'occitane as well based on the suggestions: got the free gift bag set, free sample trio, a discounted hand lotion set for a fiver, and hand and foot creme set for £16. (Considered the lovely star bauble set instead, but will find the hand/foot creme more useful in winter). Not bad for £21, and free delivery! Thanks for the tip!

These are beautiful , especially the plain ones like the angel. Free delivery too atm

EscapeToTheMoon · 13/10/2018 19:03

I work in a school. Do NOT buy a mug. They are seriously loathed.

Wine is brilliant. Just wine. All teachers drink it.

AgnesBrownsCat · 13/10/2018 22:53

I’m a teacher , I don’t drink wine 🍷.

Chrisinthemorning · 14/10/2018 06:32

Thank you for all the suggestions so far. Smile
I know the TA doesn’t drink - I asked her sister who I know. So going to avoid wine.
Last year I got mugs which I hope went down well, they were Emma Bridgewater.
Lots of good suggestions here, thank you.

At the risk of being condescending, is £10 a drop in the ocean to you, or is it a fair chunk of money? And do your children go to a fairly affluent school?

Because as a teacher I shudder when parents I know are struggling financially buy me a nice gift (and generally that's less than a tenner - I teach in school in an area of high deprivation). I'm genuinely just as pleased with a £1 box of maltesers, and a nice letter.

FWIW, when people are saying 'no mugs', they're not talking about Emma Bridgewater, but the £1 Best Teacher mugs from Card Factory. Which actually I quite like too, but that's because the attrition rates of mugs in my home is very high Grin.

Chrisinthemorning · 14/10/2018 07:13

DS is at an independent school so yes all parents are affluent.
We could spend more but it’s a thank you present from DS, so £10 ish sounded ok?
The mugs were because last year I got them from the bargain thread having bought a Good Housekeeping subscription.
In summer there’s always a collection and we give vouchers but Christmas is each to their own. Fair few Muslim children so that may be why.
DS adores his teacher and TA and had them last year as well. She’s brought him on so much so I want to show appreciation.
