I have booked my Christmas grocery delivery slot and need to make sure I don't forget any festive food and drink.

What will be on your shopping list?

OP posts:
thismeansnothing · 07/10/2018 13:06

Chicken (I hate turkey) stuffed with Clementines and lemon

Pigs in blankets

Roast potatoes

Carrots and parsnips roasted in honey (need some oil too for those and the spuds)

Brussel sprouts with bacon and garlic

Red cabbage (I've already made this and it's in the freezer) but it needs apples, bacon, fennel, balsamic vinegar

Cakeon (AKA as Nigellas gingerbread stuffing. DH makes this the day before but it's a couple of packs of Jamaica ginger cake, onions, cooking bacon and a few other bits n bobs)

Gravy (use chicken juices but need flour and a bit of a stock cube)

Foil trays! Anything to help reduce the washing up mountain

Wine for me and DH

Lemonade for DD

Xmas pud (will make on stir up Sunday)

Custard

I only tend to have Xmas dinner but always get fresh crusty bread in so DH and DD can have a leftovers butty if they want :)

Omg apologies for the lack of full stops and all one paragraph. Tapped that out on my phone and it hasn't put the new lines in 😧

Skinandbones · 07/10/2018 13:08

We are lucky my auntie send a M and s voucher every year, so it pay for our Christmas Dinner.
Pork, pigs in blankets, stuffing, potatoes, red cabbage, grave and apple sauce. Then something nice for after, but not Christmas pudding, usually something cold.
Think we might look at something different this year, my kitchen is a shoebox and it's a struggle to get dinner out for 4 of us.

TheWoollybacksWife · 07/10/2018 13:42

I get the following for dinner:

Turkey
Gammon
Pigs in blankets
Stuffing
Goose fat roasties
Honey roast carrots and parsnips
Sprouts with pancetta
Gravy

DH and DD1 have peas heathens

Cranberry sauce

DH has Christmas pudding and the rest of us have something like a posh ice cream dessert or a chocolate chestnut torte.

Fresh cream

Champagne
Wine
Schloer

Crackers

After dinner mints

We also buy pate and crackers, lebkuchken, panettone, pistachios, posh crisps, beer, cider and party food like sausage rolls and duck spring rolls for jazzed up lunches and snacks in front of the tv.

Chocolatecoffeeaddict · 07/10/2018 13:50

Turkey, beef, lamb, roast potatoes , roast parsnips, sprouts, cauliflower and broccoli cheese , carrots , kale, red cabbage ,Yorkshire puddings , mash swede and carrot ,cranberry sauce, mint sauce, horseradish, meat gravy, turkey gravy. Champagne , sparking elderflower , jug of orange juice with fresh orange slices. It's a lot but there is normally 20 so I found a good selection of veg and meat works well.

Oh I do love bread sauce but not with beef! Smile

InDubiousBattle · 07/10/2018 21:09

I've never had bread sauce!

After many years of having Christmas dinner at my sisters where we had something different every year, I now host and we've had the same menu for the last two years.
Starter- Chicken liver pate and smoked mackerel pate
Main- Ham (Hairy bikers Mum Knows Best recipe- it's absolutely lovely), a chicken (nephews always seem to want a chicken! ), pis in blankets, stuffing, roast potatoes, braised red cabbage, carrot and swede mashed up and Yorkshires.
Pud- Yule Log and mince pies.

We eat at around 4-4.30 so that we're ready for some supper at 8-8.30 when we have left over pate, cheese and crackers and stand pie.

TwitterQueen1 · 07/10/2018 22:07

Nico if you put some horseradish in the bread sauce I think you'll find it's more than acceptable...

InDubios you haven't lived... Wink

VanillaBeans · 07/10/2018 23:09

I’m so glad I found this! I have some non traditional bits for Xmas dinner and I’ve yet to make my list yet for this year as it’s just me cooking. I also have relented and now do a mix of nice prepared stuff and stuff made from scratch. So far I have:

Potatoes for roast and mash
Lots of nice butter
Goose fat
Double cream (mash and cabbage)
Turkey crown
Ham or beef joint
Pigs in blankets
Fancy prepared meat stuffing
Normal stuffing (like Paxo)
White cabbage for cream cabbage
Ready made red cabbage
Ready made cauliflower cheese
Roast parsnips
Carrots and swede mash
Brussels sprouts in butter
Ready made Yorkshire puddings
Gravy to supplement my own meat juices
Bread sauce
Cranberry sauce
Nut roast?

For pudding I like to buy some nice chocolate or caramel based puddings, salted caramel cream and some praline and cream Haagen Das. For drinks I like Rose Lemonade, Schloer and Prosecco. Also can’t forget a cheeseboard, baking Camembert and Christmas chocolates (Chocolate orange, toblerone, Turkish delight, Maltesers, Celebrations, Truffles).

For the post Christmas leftover feast I will supplement the leftover sandwiches which cold cuts, piccalilli, festive pork pies, more cheese and crisps, Stollen and croissants.

I can’t afford to spend too much at Christmas and this year the majority will be going on the food. It really makes the atmosphere for me and I’d rather do some good cooking if I have to choose between lots of presents and lots of food :)

VanillaBeans · 07/10/2018 23:15

Oh must also remember chutneys, nice bread and more Brie than is decent. Also forgot fudge, mixed nuts, shortbread, prawns (just for prawn mayo sandwiches in my house) and party food ready for NYE.

tigercub I love the idea of serving a gold chocolate Lindt bear for everyone! Really adorable Halo

tigercub50 · 08/10/2018 09:14

Ooh yes pork pies! When we were kids, we had porkpie & a glass of milk for breakfast on Christmas Day. Also forgot crisps & pickle ( love good is Branston but Aldi have some nice chutneys). And I like the idea of a baking Camembert with crusty bread to dup in mmmmmm
