I have booked my Christmas grocery delivery slot and need to make sure I don't forget any festive food and drink.

What will be on your shopping list?

I'm making and freezing as much as possible before Christmas Day as I have a tiny kitchen.

To start - DP insists on prawn cocktail so he's in charge of making that for himself and at least 2 others I imagine. Spicy beetroot soup is frozen and reheated for those that want it. Most of us will have prosciutto and melon salad.

Turkey, stuffed with sweet potato and sausage meat.
Roast potatoes
Honey roast parsnips
Roast carrots
Cauliflower (four) cheese
Red cabbage
Peas
Sprouts with pancetta
Pigs in blankets
Turkey, lardo and fennel stuffing balls
Cranberry sauce
Apple sauce
Gravy

Trifle - chocolate mousse, cherries, brownie layer, cream and chocolate shavings

I really cannot wait [santa]Blush

Christmas Eve
Roast Ham, braised red cabbage, dauphinoise/boulangere potatoes, mashed carrot and parsnip,
Trifle

Christmas Day
Breakfast - Croissants, pain au chocolat, prosecco

Starter - usually melon for the kids and prawn cocktail for adults (proper 70s retro, I love it!)
Turkey
Stuffing
Pigs in blankets,
Cranberry sauce
Bread Sauce
Gravy
Roast Potatos (We used to do roast Parsnip, no one like them except me and even I'm not so keen any more)
Sprouts
Carrots / Carrot and parsnip mash again
Cauliflower cheese (Because DH loves it!)

Christmas pudding
Brandy sauce
Ice cream

Nice cheese selection and bread / crackers

Snacks like pringles, nuts,

fizzy drinks

I will often make a decent fruit salad and usually a slaw made with sprouts, carrot, a tiny bit of onion, cranberries, sesame seeds and a lovely sesame dressing. (that is the recipe)

@thismeansnothing - do you have a recipe for your chicken? Sounds delicious!

thismeansnothing · 08/10/2018 14:26

@FeedingFrenzy5 not a recipe as such but just halve a couple of clementines and couple of garlic cloves and stick in the cavity of the chicken. Then sit the chicken on some chopped onions, carrots and clementines while it roasts. Baste a couple of times with the juices.

FeedingFrenzy5 · 08/10/2018 14:46

Mmm sounds great. Thanks!

Don't forget the chestnuts people!

Essential for the sprouts, plus stuffing (apricot, pine nuts, chestnuts, sage, sausage meat - maybe with some prunes thrown in too for extra depth of flavour).

OliviaStabler · 08/10/2018 19:02

Thanks everyone for your contributions. So interesting to see the range of what people eat and is standard Christmas fare for them.

Parmesan parsnips and Leek gratin sounds amazing!

I am reporting this thread because NO-ONE has mentioned bread sauce.

As a family we never had bread sauce, ever. I've eaten it once at a Michelin starred restaurant but that's it Blush

@InDubiousBattle Stand pie?

OP if you do pluck up the courage to try bread sauce please do not buy from Waitrose. 99% of the time I make it myself but it was on offer in January for about 20p - obviously right on sell-by date. It was absolutely DISGUSTING! It's easy to make... honest.

Maybugger · 08/10/2018 20:17

This year:
Selection of cold meats, lots of different salads, jacket potatoes and homemade hot sausage rolls.
Clementine mousse flan.
Lots of different cheeses, biscuits.

I hate traditional Christmas dinner and am having exactly what I want this year. If DD comes then there will be something vegetarian (nut roast or mushroom wellington).
